🥁 ‘THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT’: EVEN AT HIS MOST RESTRAINED, KEITH MOON IS A DRUMMING ANIMAL

Keith Moon built his reputation by playing the drums as though he was trying to escape from them. But on The Who’s glorious 1965 classic ‘The Kids Are Alright’, the legendary sticksman showed that even when somebody apparently told him to calm down, he was still an absolute bloody menace behind the kit.

There are drummers.

There are rock drummers.

And then there was Keith Moon. 🥁💥

The Who’s famously unpredictable drummer didn’t so much keep time as chase it around the studio with a pair of sticks, kick it down the stairs and then somehow arrive perfectly on cue for the next chorus.

Moon’s performances could be explosive, ridiculous and seemingly moments away from complete collapse — yet underneath all that beautiful chaos was an instinctive musicality that made him one of the most distinctive drummers rock ’n’ roll has ever produced.

And if you want proof that Moon didn’t need to be operating at maximum lunacy to sound extraordinary, chuck on ‘The Kids Are Alright’.

Compared with some of his later performances, it almost sounds restrained.

Almost.

Because this is Keith Moon we’re talking about, mun.

And even restrained Moon sounds like somebody has accidentally released a wild animal into the drum booth.

🎸 BEFORE THE ROCK OPERA, THERE WERE THREE MINUTES OF POP PERFECTION

Released in 1965 on The Who’s debut album My Generation, ‘The Kids Are Alright’ captures a fascinating version of the band.

This was before Tommy.

Before Who’s Next.

Before ‘Baba O’Riley’.

Before ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’.

Before enormous arenas, synthesiser experiments and Pete Townshend turning rock albums into sprawling conceptual statements.

Here we get The Who as a young British band capable of delivering glorious blasts of melodic pop while already sounding noticeably different from practically everybody around them.

Pete Townshend wrote a song filled with youthful uncertainty, relationships and that peculiar feeling of trying to convince yourself that everything is perfectly fine when you’re perhaps not entirely convinced.

Musically, however?

It absolutely sparkles.

Roger Daltrey delivers the melody without needing to unleash the enormous roar he’d become famous for.

John Entwistle provides that typically dependable yet brilliantly inventive foundation.

Townshend brings chiming guitar and melody.

Then, sitting behind all of them, is Moon.

Apparently behaving himself.

Sort of.

🥁 KEITH MOON DOESN’T REALLY DO “SUBTLE”

Listen casually and ‘The Kids Are Alright’ might not immediately strike you as a showcase for Moon.

There aren’t endless gigantic drum breaks.

He isn’t bulldozing through the entire arrangement.

There isn’t the sort of colossal percussion warfare we’d later hear when The Who became one of the loudest live bands walking the planet.

Instead, Moon works within the song.

And that’s precisely what makes his performance so fascinating.

He plays around the melody rather than simply sitting underneath it.

Little flourishes appear.

Cymbals shimmer.

Fills tumble into transitions.

His drums seem to respond to what the rest of the band are doing.

Most drummers are expected to provide the road upon which the song travels.

Keith Moon frequently sounded like he was driving alongside it on a motorbike, waving his sticks in the air and yelling:

“COME ON THEN!”

😂🥁

Yet somehow it works.

That was Moon’s superpower.

💥 CHAOS WITH A PURPOSE

Calling Keith Moon chaotic can sometimes undersell just how musical his drumming actually was.

Because random chaos doesn’t create performances people are still obsessing over six decades later.

Moon’s drumming could sound reckless, but there was instinct underneath it.

He listened.

He reacted.

He played to the vocals.

He played to Townshend’s guitar.

He used his kit almost like another lead instrument.

Rather than approaching rock drumming purely through the traditional relationship between bass drum, snare and hi-hat, Moon frequently created rolling patterns around the entire kit.

Toms became enormously important.

Cymbals became punctuation marks.

Fills weren’t merely something that happened between sections — sometimes they felt like part of the actual melody.

That approach would become increasingly obvious as The Who developed.

But you can already hear the DNA of it in ‘The Kids Are Alright’.

He’s not completely unleashed.

He’s not detonating everything within reach.

But you can hear the beast rattling the cage.

🎤 THE WHO WERE NEVER JUST ONE THING

That’s another reason this track remains so important.

The popular image of The Who often revolves around sheer violence.

Townshend windmilling his arm across the guitar.

Daltrey swinging microphones around his head.

Entwistle standing almost impossibly still while producing basslines capable of rearranging your internal organs.

Moon looking like somebody had given Animal from The Muppets six cans of energy drink and access to explosives.

But The Who could also be wonderfully melodic.

‘The Kids Are Alright’ proves it.

There’s a sweetness to the harmonies and an unmistakably mid-’60s British pop sensibility running through the track.

Yet there’s also tension underneath everything.

That’s where Moon becomes crucial.

His playing stops the song from becoming too neat.

Too polished.

Too comfortable.

There’s always movement.

Always something bubbling away.

Even when he’s behaving, you never entirely trust him.

Which, frankly, is exactly what you want from Keith Moon.

🤘 MOON THE LOON

Of course, separating Keith Moon the musician from Keith Moon the character became virtually impossible.

His reputation is legendary.

Hotel rooms.

Explosions.

Cars.

Televisions.

Pranks.

Destruction.

General behaviour that would cause modern tour managers to immediately develop a nervous twitch.

Moon became one of rock’s ultimate symbols of excess.

The nickname “Moon the Loon” followed him around, and plenty of stories about his behaviour have become woven into rock folklore.

But concentrating solely on the madness risks forgetting why anyone cared about Keith Moon in the first place.

He was an extraordinary drummer.

You don’t become legendary merely by smashing hotel furniture.

Rock history has had plenty of lunatics.

Very few of them could play like Moon.

🥁 HE PLAYED LIKE KEITH MOON

That’s perhaps the greatest compliment you can give him.

He doesn’t comfortably fit into conventional drummer categories.

Trying to analyse Moon purely through textbook technique can almost miss the point.

He developed a language that was unmistakably his.

Put on ‘I Can See for Miles’.

Put on ‘Bargain’.

Put on ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’.

Put on ‘The Real Me’.

Put on virtually any classic Who performance where Moon is allowed to stretch out.

Within seconds, you know who’s behind the kit.

That’s incredibly rare.

You can recognise Hendrix from a few guitar notes.

You can recognise Brian May.

Tony Iommi.

Jimmy Page.

Likewise, you can recognise Keith Moon from the way the drums seem to tumble through a Who song.

He had a musical fingerprint.

And ‘The Kids Are Alright’ gives us an early glimpse of that identity while showing that he didn’t have to dominate every second to make his presence felt.

🎶 THE SONG THAT WOULDN’T GO AWAY

‘The Kids Are Alright’ became far bigger than simply another track on The Who’s debut album.

The phrase became almost inseparable from the band’s identity.

It would later provide the title for the 1979 documentary film The Kids Are Alright, a celebration of The Who assembled from performances, interviews and archival footage.

The song itself became one of those tracks capable of immediately transporting you back to the early days of the band.

Young.

Hungry.

Stylish.

Dangerous.

Still figuring out just how enormous they were going to become.

And sitting behind the drum kit was a young Keith Moon, already demonstrating that normal drumming rules were apparently optional.

🔥 RESTRAINED… BY KEITH MOON STANDARDS

That’s the brilliant contradiction at the heart of the track.

For almost any other drummer, some of Moon’s choices would feel busy.

For Moon?

This is him practically wearing a tie and sitting politely at the dinner table.

😂

He gives the song what it needs without flattening its delicate pop character.

But those little bursts of personality keep appearing.

That’s what makes revisiting early Who recordings so much fun.

Knowing what was coming later makes these performances feel like watching lightning forming inside a cloud.

The enormous drummer of the 1970s is already there.

The instincts are there.

The unpredictability is there.

The confidence is there.

He’s simply operating within a smaller musical space.

For now.

🖤 A TALENT WE LOST FAR TOO SOON

Keith Moon died on 7 September 1978, aged just 32.

His death robbed rock music of one of its most singular personalities and musicians.

It’s impossible to know how his playing might have developed had he lived.

Would he have become more controlled?

Would age have mellowed his style?

Would he have somehow become even more outrageous?

With Keith Moon, predicting anything feels like a dangerous business.

What remains is an extraordinary body of recordings that continue to influence drummers generations later.

And while the huge Who performances understandably receive much of the attention, songs like ‘The Kids Are Alright’ reveal another side of Moon.

Not quiet.

Keith Moon was never really quiet.

But musical.

Responsive.

Inventive.

And capable of understanding exactly how far he could push against the boundaries of a song without knocking the entire thing over.

Well…

Most of the time. 😈

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Keith Moon didn’t play drums like everybody else because Keith Moon apparently had absolutely no interest in being everybody else.

That individuality turned him into an icon.

On ‘The Kids Are Alright’, we hear Moon operating with considerably more restraint than he’d become famous for — but his personality still bursts through the speakers.

The fills.

The cymbal work.

The movement.

The restless energy.

It’s all there.

The performance doesn’t scream for attention.

It doesn’t need to.

Because even when Keith Moon was supposedly keeping things under control, you could still sense that at any moment the whole drum kit might sprout legs, run through the studio wall and disappear down the road.

And somehow…

it would still be perfectly in time.

🥁💥🤘

That was Keith Moon.

That was The Who.

And more than sixty years later?

The kids are still alright, butt.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
