Irelandโs Sludge Sorcerers Return With A Filthy, Expansive Masterpiece ๐ฅ
Label: Road To Masochist
Release Date: May 29th 2026
Genre: Progressive Sludge Metal
FFO: Mastodon | Inter Arma | Baroness | Kylesa
Alright Buttโฆ if your idea of a good time involves riffs thicker than Welsh fog and atmospheres darker than a 3am kebab queue after a gig โ then TOOMS have just dropped something with your name written all over it. ๐
Straight outta Limerick, Ireland, this trio have been quietly building a reputation as one of the most exciting names in underground sludge โ and with Karst, theyโre not just knocking on the door anymoreโฆ theyโre kicking it clean off the hinges. ๐ช๐ฅ
๐ FROM SWAMP TO SONIC EVOLUTION
Formed from the ashes of their earlier project Gaia, TOOMS (Anto Donnellan, Kieran Grace and Alex Hรถlzinger) properly ignited with their 2017 single โSimon Ferociousโ โ and havenโt looked back since.
Their debut album The Orb Offers Massive Signals (2020) was already a filthy slab of sludgy brilliance, but Karst?
This is a different beast entirely. Bigger. Wilder. More dangerous.
โ๏ธ ENTER THE CAVE: TRACK BREAKDOWN VIBES
The album opens with โBlood Rust โ Of Cudgel And Quillโ โ and it doesnโt ease you in. Oh no. This thing drags you underground by the ankles.
Cavernous. Brutal. Barely controlled chaos. The kind of track that feels like it could collapse in on itself at any momentโฆ but never does.
Then comes โLowlanderโ, where the band start flexing those progressive muscles โ layering grit with moments of unexpected beauty. Itโs not pretty in the traditional senseโฆ itโs real. Raw. Alive.
Tracks like:
- โTower Of Silenceโ ๐๏ธ โ towering, oppressive, absolutely massive
- โWhitethornโ ๐ฟ โ unpredictable, jagged, like stepping barefoot on broken glass
- โTwo Silver Piecesโ ๐ช โ reflective, worn down, emotionally heavy
โฆall build this world that feels lived-in, scarred and brutally honest.
โก FINAL BOSS ENERGY
And then thereโs the closer: โPhysics Beyond The Standard Modelโ.
Mateโฆ this isnโt just a final track โ itโs a statement.
Itโs TOOMS standing at the peak of everything theyโve built so far, looking back at the chaos behind themโฆ and forward into something even bigger. Atmospheric, crushing, ambitious as hell โ and the perfect way to end an album that refuses to play it safe.
๐๏ธ PRODUCTION THAT HITS LIKE A SLEDGEHAMMER
Recorded with Chris Quigley at The Meadow Studios, then handed to mixing wizard Matt Bayles (known for shaping monsters with bands like Mastodon) and mastered by Chris Fielding (linked with Conan and more).
Translation?
This thing sounds HUGEโฆ but still filthy. Nothing polished. Nothing neutered. Just raw, breathing, snarling sound.
Exactly how sludge should be. ๐ค

๐ฅ RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Karst isnโt just heavy โ itโs alive.
It breathes. It snarls. It drags you through mud, throws you against a wall, then makes you stand there and feel every second of it.
TOOMS have taken their sludge foundations and pushed them into something far more expansive, emotional and unpredictable.
This is underground metal at its absolute finest.
Turn it up. Sink into it. Let it consume you. ๐ค๐ค
