🤘 Introduction

Some festivals celebrate rock.

Others celebrate metal.

Then there’s Damnation Festival—a festival built for those who like their riffs heavier, their blast beats faster and their breakdowns capable of shaking the foundations of an arena.

Since its launch in 2005, Damnation Festival has become one of the UK’s most respected heavy metal events. From death metal and black metal to doom, sludge, progressive metal, hardcore and everything in between, Damnation has carved out a unique place on the British festival calendar.

Unlike sprawling outdoor festivals, Damnation has always embraced the intensity of an indoor experience. No muddy fields. No camping chairs. Just thousands of metalheads packed into dark venues where the music never stops.

Now attracting fans from across Europe and beyond, Damnation Festival has become an annual pilgrimage for lovers of extreme music.

It is a festival created by metal fans, for metal fans.

🎸 The Birth of Damnation

Damnation Festival was founded by Gavin McInally and Paul Farrington, who wanted to create a festival dedicated entirely to heavy and extreme music.

At the time, Britain had plenty of rock festivals, but opportunities for fans of death metal, black metal, sludge and progressive metal were far more limited.

Rather than trying to compete with massive outdoor festivals, the organisers chose a different path.

Their vision focused on several key principles:

  • 🤘 World-class extreme metal
  • 🔥 Carefully curated line-ups
  • 🎸 Multiple stages
  • 👹 Underground legends alongside established icons
  • 🤝 A welcoming metal community
  • 🎟️ Great value for money
  • 🇬🇧 Supporting both British and international artists

The formula proved successful almost immediately.

Damnation quickly became one of the UK’s most respected independent festivals.

🏟️ Why an Indoor Festival?

One of Damnation’s defining features has always been its indoor setting.

Rather than worrying about rain, mud or unpredictable British weather, fans enjoy a full day of music inside purpose-built venues with excellent acoustics and production.

The indoor environment also creates a unique atmosphere.

Every performance feels intense.

The crowds are louder.

The lights are darker.

The pits are bigger.

For many fans, it feels less like attending a festival and more like spending an entire day inside the world’s biggest metal club.

🎪 The Damnation Experience

Damnation is about far more than simply watching bands.

Visitors can expect:

  • 🎸 Multiple stages
  • 🎤 International metal legends
  • 🔥 Exclusive UK performances
  • 🛍️ Merchandise village
  • 💿 Independent record labels
  • 🤝 Meet fellow metal fans from around the world
  • 🍔 Food and drink vendors
  • 📸 Artist signings
  • 🎧 Continuous live music throughout the day
  • ♿ Accessible facilities

The atmosphere is famously welcoming.

Despite the aggressive music, the community has earned a reputation as one of the friendliest in live music.

📅 2005 – The Beginning

The inaugural Damnation Festival arrived with a bold ambition—to create a dedicated home for extreme metal in the UK.

Held in Manchester, the first edition featured a carefully curated line-up that immediately caught the attention of Britain’s underground metal scene.

Attendance was modest compared with today’s standards, but the passion inside the venue was undeniable.

Fans embraced the concept.

The organisers proved there was room for a specialist metal festival that celebrated the heavier end of the spectrum.

Damnation had arrived.

⚡ 2006–2009 – Building a Reputation

Over the next few years, the festival steadily expanded.

Each edition introduced bigger names, stronger production and an increasingly loyal audience.

Word spread quickly throughout the UK metal community.

Fans travelled from every corner of Britain to attend.

International visitors also began making the journey.

By the end of the decade, Damnation had established itself as one of Europe’s finest one-day extreme metal festivals.

🔥 2010–2014 – Becoming a Metal Institution

The 2010s marked a period of significant growth.

The festival attracted increasingly prestigious headliners while maintaining its commitment to underground music.

Death metal.

Black metal.

Progressive metal.

Doom.

Sludge.

Post-metal.

Hardcore.

Everything heavy found a home.

The organisers also earned praise for avoiding repetitive booking, ensuring each year’s line-up felt fresh and exciting.

💀 2015–2019 – Bigger Names, Bigger Crowds

As attendance continued to grow, Damnation became an essential date on the UK metal calendar.

International headliners joined beloved British acts, while rising bands received opportunities to perform alongside genre legends.

Each year featured countless exclusive UK appearances, reunion performances and rare sets that attracted fans from across Europe.

The festival became known for delivering line-ups that felt carefully crafted rather than commercially assembled.

Every announcement generated excitement.

Every timetable sparked impossible clashes.

Every year created unforgettable memories.

🦠 2020 – The Pandemic Pause

Like almost every live music event around the world, Damnation faced enormous challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival was unable to take place in its traditional format.

Despite the disappointment, the organisers remained committed to returning stronger than ever.

The loyalty shown by fans during this difficult period highlighted just how important Damnation had become to the UK’s metal community.

🤘 2021–2022 – The Return

When live music returned, Damnation returned with it.

The festival once again filled venues with thousands of metal fans desperate to experience live music after months of uncertainty.

The atmosphere felt emotional.

Crowd reactions were louder.

Every riff carried extra meaning.

It reminded everyone why festivals matter.

🏟️ 2023 – A New Era at the BEC Arena

One of the biggest moments in the festival’s history came with its move to the BEC Arena in Manchester.

The new venue allowed the festival to expand significantly.

More space.

Improved production.

Additional stages.

Greater capacity.

Despite the larger scale, Damnation retained its underground identity.

It still felt like a festival built by metal fans rather than corporate promoters.

⚔️ 2024 – Raising the Bar Again

The second year at the BEC Arena demonstrated that the move had been the right decision.

Larger crowds packed the venue.

Production reached new heights.

The expanded format gave fans more bands than ever before.

The community atmosphere remained intact.

Many described it as one of the strongest editions in the festival’s history.

🔥 2025 – Twenty Years of Heavy Music

Approaching its twentieth anniversary, Damnation had firmly established itself among Europe’s premier indoor metal festivals.

Bands from every corner of the heavy music spectrum shared stages throughout the weekend.

Veteran legends performed alongside exciting newcomers.

The festival continued proving that heavy music remains healthier than ever.

😈 2026 – The Next Chapter

The 2026 edition continued Damnation’s tradition of delivering an uncompromising celebration of heavy music.

Fans once again travelled from across the UK and Europe to experience one of the strongest extreme metal line-ups anywhere in Britain.

Multiple stages showcased everything from death metal and black metal to progressive metal, hardcore, sludge and doom.

The organisers once again demonstrated why Damnation has earned such enormous respect throughout the international metal community.

🎤 Multiple Stages – Something Heavy for Everyone

One of Damnation’s greatest strengths is its carefully programmed stages.

Each stage develops its own personality throughout the day.

Fans can move between crushing death metal, atmospheric black metal, technical progressive bands and chaotic hardcore without leaving the venue.

Although clashes are inevitable, they’re a sign of just how stacked every line-up becomes.

🌟 Supporting New Music

While legendary acts often headline the festival, Damnation has never forgotten emerging artists.

Every year introduces fans to exciting new bands who often return in later years to play much higher slots.

Supporting underground music remains one of the festival’s defining characteristics.

🍺 Food, Drink and Merchandise

Away from the stages, visitors can enjoy:

  • 🍔 Street food vendors
  • 🍺 Bars
  • ☕ Coffee stalls
  • 🛍️ Independent merchandise
  • 💿 Vinyl and CD traders
  • 👕 Band merchandise
  • 🎸 Record labels
  • 🤝 Community meet-ups

The merchandise area alone has become a destination for collectors looking for rare releases and exclusive festival items.

♿ Accessibility

Accessibility has continued improving as the festival has evolved.

Features include:

  • ♿ Accessible viewing facilities
  • 🚻 Accessible toilets
  • 🎟️ Carer ticket options
  • 🏟️ Indoor access
  • 👥 Helpful event staff

The organisers continue working to ensure that every metal fan can enjoy the festival.

❤️ Why Fans Love Damnation

Visitors regularly praise:

  • Incredible line-ups
  • Friendly atmosphere
  • Outstanding sound quality
  • Excellent organisation
  • Diverse styles of heavy music
  • Discovering new bands
  • Rare UK appearances
  • Passionate organisers
  • Indoor comfort
  • Feeling part of the metal community

Many fans describe Damnation as their favourite festival of the year.

🏆 Greatest Damnation Moments

Highlights include:

  • Launching Britain’s premier indoor extreme metal festival
  • Surviving nearly two decades of change
  • Welcoming some of the biggest names in heavy music
  • Moving successfully to the BEC Arena
  • Supporting countless emerging artists
  • Becoming one of Europe’s most respected indoor metal festivals

Every edition has added another chapter to the festival’s remarkable story.

🔮 The Future of Damnation

The future looks heavier than ever.

With a larger venue, growing audiences and increasingly ambitious line-ups, Damnation continues to strengthen its position as Britain’s leading indoor metal festival.

The organisers remain committed to championing underground music while bringing some of the world’s biggest metal acts to Manchester.

As long as metal fans crave crushing riffs, thunderous drums and unforgettable live performances, Damnation Festival will remain an essential pilgrimage.

⭐ The Riff Report Verdict

Damnation Festival isn’t trying to be Britain’s biggest festival.

It’s trying to be Britain’s best heavy metal festival.

And judging by the thousands of devoted fans who return every year, it’s doing an incredible job.

It has stayed true to its underground roots while growing into one of Europe’s most respected indoor metal events.

There are no distractions.

No gimmicks.

No unnecessary frills.

Just world-class heavy music played at ear-splitting volume by some of the finest bands on the planet.

Whether you’re witnessing a legendary headline set, discovering your next favourite underground band or joining a wall of death with complete strangers who instantly become friends, Damnation reminds us why the metal community is unlike any other.

Heavy riffs.

Heavy atmosphere.

Heavy memories.

Built by metalheads. Powered by metalheads.

That’s Damnation Festival. 😈🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
