🔥🤘Strap in, butt. This ain’t a list — it’s a neon-soaked pilgrimage through the dusty catacombs of 80s rock glory.Expect riffs. Expect chaos. Expect enough hairspray to ruin the ozone layer twice
🎸 1. ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION
Genre: Sleaze Rock / Biker Rock
For Fans Of: Motörhead, The Cult, biker bars with sticky floors
Ahh Zodiac Mindwarp — the band that looked like they emerged from a Mad Max movie after losing a fistfight with a bottle of Jack Daniels. This wasn’t glam rock. This wasn’t hard rock. This was filthy, leather-drenched, tongue-in-cheek sleaze with riffs thick enough to shatter your Nan’s china cabinet.
Their breakout single “Prime Mover” was a snarling, swaggering anthem with a chorus you could shout at a traffic warden. And Zodiac himself?
A cross between Lemmy, Jim Morrison, and the fever dream of a tattoo artist who hadn’t slept in days.
Why they didn’t blow up?
Because the 80s were too scared of men who looked like they might ride a flaming motorbike directly into the sunset.
Where to start:
🔥 Tattooed Beat Messiah (1988) — one of the most gloriously stupid, brilliant albums ever made. Proper job, butt.
🎤 2. WARLOCK (Fronted by the Immortal Metal Queen Doro Pesch)
Genre: Power Metal / Traditional Heavy Metal
For Fans Of: Dio, Accept, Judas Priest, warrior queens
Before social media, before “women in metal” became a trending topic, Doro Pesch strutted onto the world stage with leather, spikes, and a voice forged in the molten heart of Mount Doom.
Warlock weren’t just good — they were elite.
Massive choruses. Towering riffs. Theatrical energy. A frontwoman who could out-scream half the blokes on the Monsters of Rock bill.
Doro Pesch basically carried the entire band on her shoulders like a Viking carrying groceries home.
Why didn’t they go global?
A nightmare legal battle over the band name, management issues, and the unstoppable changing tides of the late 80s.
Where to start:
🔥 Triumph and Agony (1987) — “All We Are” is a fist-pumping metal anthem for the ages.
⚡ 3. VINNIE VINCENT INVASION
Genre: Glam Metal / Shred Metal
For Fans Of: KISS, W.A.S.P., Yngwie Malmsteen
When you’re fired from KISS for having too much personality… you’re truly operating on another plane of existence.
Vinnie Vincent formed the Invasion like a glam-metal Frankenstein:
💥 insane vocals
💥 spandex abuse
💥 200mph guitar solos that broke the time barrier
Their debut album is basically the 80s distilled into one unhinged experience — like someone strapped rockets to Cinderella and said “go faster.”
Why they didn’t last?
Vinnie Vincent’s legendary unpredictability + internal band chaos = kaboom.
But musically? Untouchable.
Where to start:
🔥 Vinnie Vincent Invasion (1986)
🔥 All Systems Go (1988)
🎷 4. TORA TORA
Genre: Bluesy Hard Rock
For Fans Of: Tesla, Skid Row, Little Caesar
Tora Tora were the anti-glam band — soulful, blues-drenched Memphis rockers who valued swagger over spandex.
They could’ve been the American answer to The Black Crowes, but they arrived just as the market was drowning in big-haired clones.
Their music holds up shockingly well today — groovy, punchy rock with gritty vocals and proper musicianship.
Where to start:
🔥 Surprise Attack (1989)
Try “Walkin’ Shoes” and tell me you don’t feel like sauntering into a bar like you’re in an 80s action film.
🏰 5. HOUSE OF LORDS
Genre: Glam Metal / Hard Rock with Symphonic Edge
For Fans Of: Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Europe
Imagine Whitesnake and Queen having a baby inside a cathedral while a choir sings power chords in the background. That’s House of Lords.
Big vocals.
Bigger production.
Nuclear-level hair volume.
Their self-titled debut was stacked with anthems, yet somehow they never broke through the mainstream barrier. Probably because the late 80s were about to be eaten alive by grunge lurking in the vents.
Where to start:
🔥 House of Lords (1988)
A pomp-rock masterpiece. Lush, lush, lush.
🎩 6. ELECTRIC BOYS
Genre: Funk Metal / Hard Rock
For Fans Of: Extreme, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour
Sweden’s finest purveyors of groovy, psychedelic, swagger-filled FUNK METAL.
These lads were so ahead of their time it hurts.
They didn’t just bring riffs — they brought funk, melodies, hats, and more charisma than should be legal.
Their debut album is one of those records where every track is a vibe.
Where to start:
🔥 Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride (1989)
Put it on during pre-drinks before a festival and watch people ask, “WHO IS THIS?!”
💋 7. ENUFF Z’NUFF
Genre: Power Pop / Glam Rock / Psychedelic Rock
For Fans Of: Cheap Trick, Jellyfish, early Beatles
Enuff Z’Nuff were glam, but they weren’t glam.
Psychedelic, but not hippies.
Pop, but too rock to be radio-friendly.
Basically: too good to categorise and too weird for MTV to figure out.
Their melodies were phenomenal — the kind of songwriting that should’ve put them in stadiums. Instead, they became a cult favourite that real music nerds still rave about to this day.
Where to start:
🔥 Enuff Z’Nuff (1989)
“Fly High Michelle” = pure magic.
🥁 8. BONHAM (Led by Jason Bonham)
Genre: Hard Rock / Arena Rock
For Fans Of: Led Zeppelin, Thunder, Bad Company
Jason Bonham didn’t try to be his father — he honoured him while carving his own path.
And Bonham was a seriously solid band with arena-sized songs and top-tier musicianship.
“Wait for You” is one of those tracks that absolutely should’ve been a global smash.
Why they didn’t break bigger?
Timing, promotion, and the tidal wave of alt-rock that swept the world away in ’92.
Where to start:
🔥 The Disregard of Timekeeping (1989)
🍁 9. KILLER DWARFS
Genre: Melodic Metal / Hard Rock
For Fans Of: Triumph, Ratt, Quiet Riot
The most fun you can have with your clothes on (or off, no judgement).
Killer Dwarfs brought humour to metal without ever compromising the riffs — think Spinal Tap but actually good at their instruments.
Catchy hooks, killer harmonies, tongue-in-cheek videos — they had all the ingredients.
The cult following they do have? Fiercely loyal.
Where to start:
🔥 Big Deal (1988)
🔥 Dirty Weapons (1990)
🐍 10. BABYLON A.D.
Genre: Hard Rock / Melodic Metal
For Fans Of: Skid Row, Tesla, Dokken
Babylon A.D. arrived late to the glam-metal party — like REALLY late.
Picture everyone passed out, mascara running, the DJ packing up, and Babylon A.D. walking in like:
“Alright lads, let’s get this party started.”
Their self-titled debut was stacked with monster hooks and slick production — but by 1990, the scene was seconds away from being eaten alive by plaid shirts and Seattle gloom.
Where to start:
🔥 Babylon A.D. (1990)
Listen to “Bang Go the Bells” — absolute belter.
🤘🔥 FINAL ENCORE – YOUR 80s HOMEWORK, BUTT!
These ten bands didn’t just fall through the cracks — they were shoved there by the brutal music industry cycle.
But the riffs?
Still glorious.
Still loud.
Still able to make you shout “YESS MUN!” at your car radio.
