🤖🎸 SPOTIFY DRAWS A LINE IN THE DIGITAL SAND: NEW ‘AI PERSONA’ LABELS WILL SEPARATE ARTIFICIAL ARTISTS FROM REAL MUSICIANS

Spotify is preparing to make it considerably easier to tell whether the “artist” blasting through your headphones is an actual human being… or something cooked up by artificial intelligence.

And frankly, with AI-generated music multiplying faster than festival campsite rubbish on Monday morning, this was probably inevitable.

The streaming giant has announced a new “AI Persona” label designed to identify artist profiles representing AI-generated identities rather than real human performers.

The change is expected to begin rolling out from mid-September 2026, marking one of Spotify’s strongest attempts yet to tackle the increasingly blurry line between musicians using AI as a creative tool and entirely artificial “artists” masquerading as the real deal. (Reuters)

And there’s another rather important twist.

Spotify reportedly won’t just stick a badge on them.

AI Personas will also be kept out of Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. (The Guardian)

Yep.

The robots aren’t getting a free pass into Discover Weekly. 🤖🚫

🎤 WHAT EXACTLY IS AN “AI PERSONA”?

This distinction is important because Spotify isn’t declaring war on every musician who’s ever opened an AI-powered plug-in.

There’s a massive difference between a human musician using artificial intelligence somewhere during production and a completely fabricated artist identity.

Musicians have always embraced technology.

Synthesizers were controversial.

Drum machines were controversial.

Sampling was controversial.

Auto-Tune was controversial.

Hell, if guitarists had their way, every technological development since the Marshall stack would probably have required a parliamentary inquiry.

AI can similarly be used as one tool among many during songwriting, production, mixing or experimentation.

Spotify itself has previously argued that AI use exists on a spectrum rather than being a simple “AI” or “not AI” question. Its AI disclosure system allows rights holders to identify things such as AI-generated vocals, instrumentation or post-production within song credits. (Spotify)

The new AI Persona system tackles something different.

It’s aimed at profiles where the public-facing identity of the supposed artist is itself artificial.

In other words:

No singer.
No drummer.
No guitarist.
No bassist arriving twenty minutes late because apparently nobody told them load-in was at four.

Just a digital identity attached to generated music.

🟢 REAL ARTISTS HAVE ALREADY STARTED GETTING VERIFIED

This latest move doesn’t appear out of nowhere.

Earlier in 2026, Spotify introduced its “Verified by Spotify” badge, represented by a light-green checkmark.

The verification system is intended to give listeners another indication that the musician behind a profile is an authentic artist.

Crucially, Spotify said profiles primarily representing AI-generated or AI-persona artists would not be eligible for verification when the programme launched. (Spotify)

Spotify also said that more than 99% of artists listeners actively search for were covered by verification at launch, representing hundreds of thousands of musicians, including a huge number of independent artists. (Spotify)

So we’re beginning to see something resembling two lanes emerge.

🟢 Verified human artist

versus

🤖 AI Persona

For listeners scrolling through millions upon millions of tracks, that little distinction could become enormously important.

🚨 AND AI MUSIC SPAM HAS BECOME A MASSIVE PROBLEM

Here’s where things get absolutely bonkers.

Spotify revealed in September 2025 that it had removed more than 75 MILLION spammy tracks in just 12 months during a period when generative AI tools were exploding in popularity. (Spotify)

Seventy-five.

Million.

Tracks.

That’s enough material to keep your mate who insists on controlling the Bluetooth speaker busy until approximately the heat death of the universe.

Spotify has been particularly concerned about AI being used for impersonation, mass-produced spam and deceptive content designed to divert royalties away from legitimate musicians and songwriters.

And that’s where The Riff Report reckons the conversation needs to remain focused.

Because AI as a creative tool isn’t necessarily the enemy.

Deception is.

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT TAKE: JUST TELL US WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO

Look, mun.

Technology isn’t going anywhere.

AI isn’t going anywhere.

And musicians experimenting with new technology isn’t exactly a shocking development.

Rock ‘n’ roll itself has spent decades abusing whatever technology somebody foolishly left unattended in the studio.

But listeners deserve to know what they’re listening to.

If somebody spends years learning guitar, writes songs in their bedroom, rehearses every Tuesday night above a pub, saves enough money to record an EP, drives four hours to play to 27 people and a confused Labrador, then somehow manages to build themselves an audience…

…that human story matters.

Music isn’t just an audio file.

It’s experience.

It’s personality.

It’s mistakes.

It’s heartbreak.

It’s four sweaty people crammed into a Transit van arguing about whose turn it is to buy petrol.

It’s playing your first gig.

It’s playing your hundredth gig.

It’s dropping your plectrum halfway through the biggest solo of the night.

It’s bands meeting fans.

It’s tiny venues.

It’s festival fields.

It’s friendships.

It’s community.

It’s people.

And when an entirely synthetic act can appear alongside those musicians without listeners knowing the difference, transparency becomes absolutely essential.

🤖 AI MUSIC ISN’T ACTUALLY BEING BANNED

That’s another important point.

Spotify isn’t simply deleting everything involving artificial intelligence.

Instead, the company appears to be trying to separate responsible creative use of AI from deceptive artificial identities, spam and impersonation.

Spotify has previously said artists should remain free to decide whether AI plays a role in their creative process, while the platform focuses on fighting misuse. (Spotify)

That’s probably a much more workable approach than trying to establish some ridiculous rule where using one AI-assisted mastering tool suddenly turns Dave from Swansea and his doom-metal band into CyberDave3000.

Because the boundaries are going to get messy.

Really messy.

What happens when a human writes the song but generates the vocals?

What if an actual band uses AI artwork?

What if somebody creates a fictional virtual frontman but humans write and perform everything?

What if AI helps generate lyrics but the musicians completely rewrite them?

What if AI produces a demo which humans then record?

These aren’t questions with particularly tidy answers.

And that’s why transparency matters more than blanket bans.

🔍 SPOTIFY IS ALSO TRYING TO PROTECT EXISTING ARTIST PROFILES

Another headache caused by the explosion of easily generated music has involved tracks appearing on the wrong artist pages.

Spotify introduced an Artist Profile Protection beta earlier this year allowing eligible artists to review releases before they appear on their profiles.

Spotify specifically acknowledged that incorrectly attributed releases had been a long-running streaming problem and that the arrival of easy-to-produce AI music had made things worse. (Spotify for Artists)

Imagine spending twenty years building your band’s catalogue only to wake up and discover you’ve apparently released a 37-track AI-generated ambient banjo album overnight.

“Gaz… did you upload this?”

“No.”

“Steve?”

“No.”

“Right. Someone wake the drummer up.”

🥁😂

💰 BECAUSE THIS IS ALSO ABOUT MONEY

There’s another elephant stomping around the rehearsal room.

Streaming royalties.

Every fraudulent stream generated by spam operations potentially distorts an ecosystem where genuine musicians are already fighting for microscopic slices of streaming revenue.

Mass-producing music using generative tools can happen at a scale impossible for traditional artists.

A real band might release an album every couple of years.

A content operation equipped with generative technology can potentially churn out material at industrial speed.

And once you’ve got millions of tracks competing for attention, recommendation algorithms become incredibly powerful gatekeepers.

That’s why Spotify’s decision to exclude AI Personas from personalised recommendations by default could prove more significant than the badge itself. (The Guardian)

The AI material can still exist.

People who genuinely want it can still seek it out.

But it shouldn’t automatically receive the same recommendation machinery pushing it into listeners’ feeds.

That’s a potentially massive distinction.

🔥 THIS DEBATE IS ONLY GETTING STARTED

Don’t expect Spotify’s announcement to settle the AI music argument.

Not even close.

We’re probably standing at the beginning of one of the biggest technological shake-ups the music industry has experienced since digital downloads and streaming completely rewrote the rulebook.

Record labels will have questions.

Musicians will have questions.

Songwriters will have lots of questions.

Copyright lawyers are probably already ordering another coffee.

And fans will ultimately decide how much they care whether the artist they’re hearing actually exists.

But giving listeners enough information to make that choice?

That’s surely the bare minimum.

If your favourite new metal band consists of four lads from Newport surviving on Greggs and caffeine, brilliant.

If they’re four fictional characters generated by somebody’s laptop in Milton Keynes?

Fine.

Just tell us.

Because music fans deserve to know whether there’s actually someone behind the microphone.

🤘 HUMAN, MACHINE… OR SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN?

Spotify’s new AI Persona badge won’t solve every problem surrounding artificial intelligence and music.

It won’t settle copyright arguments.

It won’t stop every dodgy upload.

It won’t magically detect every synthetic artist.

And it certainly won’t answer the philosophical nightmare of what technically counts as an “artist” in 2026.

But it does represent something important:

A line is finally being drawn between musicians who use technology and artificial identities pretending to be musicians.

For the bands sweating it out in rehearsal rooms, sleeping in vans, hauling amps up venue staircases and playing their guts out every weekend, that’s a distinction worth protecting.

Technology can help make music.

Technology can change music.

Technology can even challenge what we think music can be.

But there’ll always be something gloriously irreplaceable about four humans walking onto a stage, turning everything up far too loud and making an entire room lose its collective mind.

Long live the riffs. Long live the musicians. And if the robots want in the pit… they can bloody well wear a badge. 🤖🤘🔥

💬 WHAT DO YOU RECKON, RIFFERS?

Should all AI-generated artists and songs be clearly labelled on streaming platforms?

Should fully artificial acts be allowed into recommendation playlists?

Or should Spotify go even further and give listeners a switch to remove AI-generated artists entirely?

Get involved and let us know.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
