Letโs get one thing straight โ Cristina Scabbia is not โsomeoneโs girlfriend,โ not โthe token female,โ and definitely not a โbackstage groupie.โ Sheโs the frontline queen of Italian metal titans Lacuna Coil, and sheโs once again reminding the world that women in heavy music still have to fight to be seen for what they are โ artists, not accessories.
In a new feature with Metal Hammer, Cristina opened up about her early years in the Italian pop/dance scene, how she smashed through the barriers of the metal world, and the maddening assumptions women still face even now.
โSecurity will think that youโre either the wife or the girlfriend of someone, or a groupie,โ Scabbia says. โIt still happens. People donโt always assume youโre there because you belong on that stage.โ
Ainโt that just classic? ๐ The idea that in 2025, one of the most commanding voices in metal still has to deal with that nonsense is enough to make anyone tamping, mun.
โก From Club Beats to Cathedral Screams
Before she was melting faces on festival stages across the world, Cristina was hustling in Italyโs pop and dance circuits โ where sequins ruled and distortion pedals were a myth. But it didnโt take long for her darker side to call.
When she joined Lacuna Coil in the mid-90s, she helped fuse gothic atmosphere with metal riffs, becoming one of the few voices in the scene capable of sounding both angelic and utterly demonic โ often in the same song. ๐
Tracks like โHeavenโs A Lieโ, โSwampedโ, and โTrip the Darknessโ didnโt just define a sound โ they redefined what female power in metal could look and sound like.
๐ค โYou Have to Prove Yourself Twice as Hardโ
Cristinaโs words hit home for a lot of women in the scene โ whether theyโre on stage, behind the barrier, or in the crowd. Thereโs still a lingering idea that metalโs a โmanโs world,โ but the likes of Scabbia, Amy Lee, Tatiana Shmayluk (Jinjer), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), and Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) have turned that old trope into dust.
Scabbia doesnโt dwell on anger โ she turns it into fuel. Every show, every scream, every defiant look down the camera lens says the same thing:
โIโm not here because of anyone. Iโm here because I earned it.โ
๐ฎ Gothic Queen. Trailblazer. Absolute Legend.
Lacuna Coilโs rise from Milanโs underground to the biggest festival stages on Earth is proof that talent cuts through all the noise. Whether itโs her duelling vocals with Andrea Ferro, her theatrical presence, or her ability to make 50,000 people fall silent with one note โ Cristina Scabbia owns her space.
Sheโs been in the game for nearly three decades and still sounds as fierce as ever. Proper job! ๐ด๐ฅ
๐ฌ โMetal Isnโt Just Music โ Itโs a Movementโ
The message from Scabbiaโs interview couldnโt be clearer: the fight for equality in metal isnโt about bitterness, itโs about balance. Women arenโt โtrying to take overโ โ theyโre just demanding to be recognised for what they already are: the backbone of the scene.
As more women step into headline slots, headline tours, and headline attitudes, the old guardโs excuses are looking thinner than a cheap pint at Download.
Cristinaโs words echo through the amps:
โWeโre here. Weโve always been here. And weโre not leaving.โ
๐ค The Final Riff
Cristina Scabbia doesnโt just front a band โ she fronts a movement. Her story reminds us that heavy music has room for everyone, and that metalโs true power lies in its rebellion, not its restrictions.
So next time someone dares call her a โgroupie,โ theyโd better be ready for the roar that follows. ๐ค๐ฅ
Lacuna Coil forever. Women in metal forever.
Diolch, Cristina. Youโre a legend. ๐ค
