🎸💀 INTRO: EARACHE RECORDS — WHERE THE EXTREME BECAME ICONIC

Some labels create trends.
Some labels catch trends.
And then there’s Earache Records — the label that took a sledgehammer to “trends,” broke them into pieces, glued them back together wrong, and invented genres by accident on a Tuesday morning.

Born from the Nottingham underground in 1985, Earache wasn’t built like a normal record label. It wasn’t formed by businessmen in suits sniffing market share.
It was built by a metal nerd with a typewriter, a mountain of demo tapes, and a stubborn refusal to accept that music had to be “safe” or “marketable.”

That nerd was Digby Pearson, still very much the grand wizard of chaos powering Earache today. And thanks to him, metal history was never the same again.

If you love grindcore, death metal, industrial metal, doom, stoner rock, thrash revival, blues-rock revival, or anything loud enough to annoy every neighbour within a 3-mile radius…
You owe Digby a pint, mun. 🍺🔥

This is the full, riff-packed, cymbal-smashing, timeline-shredding 3000-word mega history of Earache Records, written Riff Report style — cheeky, noisy, and proudly Cymraeg. 🏴🤘

Let’s go.

⚡ CHAPTER I

THE UNDERGROUND ERUPTS (1985–1987)

How a Nottingham bedroom became the blastbeat capital of the world

It all started with fanzines, tape trading, and the DIY spirit that built the entire 80s metal underground. Digby Pearson wasn’t trying to build a multinational label — he was simply obsessed with the most extreme music possible.

Back then, the mainstream metal world was obsessed with glam, hair spray, and eyeliner powerful enough to survive a nuclear winter. Meanwhile, Digby was hunting for the rawest, angriest, fastest underground filth he could find.

His fanzine “Heresy” (named after one of the UK’s early hardcore/grind acts) helped build connections with bands across the UK and Europe. The more he traded, the more he realised something huge was brewing:
a brand-new musical language built on speed, distortion, and pure bloody chaos.

Enter: Napalm Death.

Nottingham meets Birmingham. DIY meets anarchy.
The stars aligned — loudly.

🔥 CHAPTER II

THE ALBUM THAT REWROTE MUSIC: SCUM (1987)

There are metal albums… and then there’s Scum.

Released in 1987, Napalm Death’s Scum hit like a meteor. It wasn’t just fast — it was ridiculous. It didn’t just challenge metal — it blew a hole in the wall and ran out screaming.

“Grindcore” wasn’t really a word yet, but Scum became the dictionary definition. A fusion of hardcore punk’s speed, death metal’s brutality, and a sonic philosophy best described as:
“If it sounds like a jet engine dying, good.”

And here’s the wild part:
Side A and Side B were recorded by two completely different line-ups.
Digby was dealing with musicians who were practically evolving mid-album.

It didn’t matter.
Scum was a masterpiece of mayhem.

BBC Radio accidentally played “You Suffer” (all 1.3 seconds of it).
John Peel became a fan.
The underground shook.
Earache was now the home of extreme music.

And Digby?
He’d only just begun.

💀 CHAPTER III

THE LATE-80s GOD TIER SIGNINGS (1988–1989)

Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, and the roster from hell

If Scum cracked open the door, the next few years were a battering ram of legendary signings. Earache wasn’t just finding bands — they were shaping entire genres.

Let’s break down the holy list:

🩸 Carcass — Goregrind Pioneers (1988)

Reek of Putrefaction was so grim the first pressing looked like a crime scene photographed through a potato.
The medical dictionary lyrics? Genius.
The riffs? Filthy.
The vibe? Disturbing… but weirdly charming.

Carcass helped define goregrind, death metal, and melodic death metal — all while irritating everyone’s nan. Proper job.

⚔️ Bolt Thrower — War Metal Royalty (1988)

Imagine riffs delivered by a Panzer division.
That’s Bolt Thrower.
Born from the UK crust scene, they became legends of war-themed death metal — deep grooves, crushing riffs, and artwork inspired by Games Workshop.

Only in Britain, mun. 😂🏴

🔥 Morbid Angel — Death Metal Mastery (1989)

Altars of Madness wasn’t an album — it was a demonic ritual.
Earache signing them was a power move.
Florida death metal now had a European home, and suddenly the whole world took the scene seriously.

🧱 Godflesh — Industrial Metal Architects (1989)

No blastbeats.
No solos.
Just machinery, misery, bass, and concrete.
Streetcleaner was a sonic apocalypse and a blueprint for every industrial band that followed.

⚡ Terrorizer — Grind Kings (1989)

World Downfall is still one of the most perfect extreme albums ever recorded.
Drumming so fast it changes the weather.

Earache wasn’t signing bands — they were building the Mount Rushmore of Extreme Metal.

🌍 CHAPTER IV

THE EARLY 90s: GLOBAL DOMINATION (1990–1994)

Death metal, doom, stoner, thrash — Earache claims every corner of heavy music

By the 90s, Earache was no longer underground curiosity.
They were THE label for extreme metal worldwide.
A badge of honour.
A flag of rebellion.

This era delivered pure classics.

⚙️ Entombed — Swedish Death Metal Royalty

While signed mainly to Earache for distribution, the impact was huge. The HM-2 chainsaw tone of Left Hand Path remains one of the most iconic guitar sounds ever.

Walk into any Welsh rehearsal room and someone is trying (badly) to copy it. Bless ’em.

🌲 Cathedral — Doom Metal Titans (1991)

Lee Dorrian went from Napalm Death to the slowest band alive.
Forest of Equilibrium is doom at its purest — glacial, heavy, mystical.

🧨 Brutal Truth — Grindcore Goes Technical (1992)

When your grind band is so experimental it gives jazz musicians headaches, you know you’re onto something.

🌄 Sleep — Stoner Doom Icons (1992)

Holy Mountain helped birth the entire stoner movement.
Without Earache, half the modern doom scene wouldn’t exist.

🦴 Massacre, Nocturnus, Vader, and more

Earache grabbed bands from Florida, the UK, Sweden, Poland — creating an international extreme metal network long before social media existed.

They weren’t just releasing records.
They were rewriting metal geography.

🦾 CHAPTER V

THE MID-90s: THE EXPERIMENTAL ERA (1995–1999)

Dub, Industrial, Melodic Death, Noise — Earache refuses to play it safe

Most labels would sit back and milk the success.

Not Earache.

Digby decided to throw curveballs like a pitcher on Red Bull.

🎛️ At The Gates (1995)

Slaughter of the Soul — melodeath’s bible.
Metalcore owes them royalties.

🇬🇧 Dub War (1995)

Newport’s finest.
Metal + dub + punk + reggae.
A chaotic fusion that later inspired Skindred.

You want Welsh representation? This is the one. 🏴🔥

🦾 Pitchshifter (1990s)

Cyberpunk industrial metal before cyberpunk was trendy.
Ahead of their time — and then some.

😈 Anal Cunt

Infamous, offensive, intentionally stupid — a grindcore anti-band. Earache took risks few labels ever would.

🌑 Scorn

From Napalm Death to dark ambient dub-metal.
Talk about a career pivot, mun.

This era wasn’t about pleasing fans — it was about exploring the outer edges of heavy music.

Earache was unpredictable… and brilliant.

⚡ CHAPTER VI

THE 2000s — NEW ERA, NEW NOISE (2000–2010)

Industrial madness, thrash revival, and theatrical Satanic suits

The millennium brought change — the metal landscape shifted, but Earache stayed wild.

😈 Akercocke

Blackened death metal gentlemen performing satanic rituals in business suits.
Iconic.
Ridiculous.
Beloved.

💀 The Berzerker

Australia’s masked industrial grind terrorists.
Loud, terrifying, and impossible to ignore.

🎧 Mortiis

Former dungeon synth goblin goes industrial goth superstar.
An arc worthy of a Netflix series.

⚡ Evile

Leaders of the UK thrash revival.
Brought classic metal energy into the modern age.

🔥 Cult reissues & rediscoveries

Earache also reissued and revived classics from Deicide, Morbid Angel, and more — keeping extreme metal’s roots alive while pushing forward.

🎸 CHAPTER VII

THE 2010s — EARACHE’S SHOCK ROCK ’N’ ROLL RENAISSANCE

Suddenly… Earache goes blues rock and TAKES OVER THE CHARTS

Nobody saw this coming.
Not fans.
Not critics.
Probably not Digby either.

Earache embraced retro rock, blues rock, Americana, punk-rock swagger, and became a surprising chart force.

🔥 Rival Sons

The crown jewel of modern rock revival.
Their Earache releases helped spark a global resurgence of vintage-styled heavy rock.
Grammy nominations.
Festival main stages.
Sold-out tours.

Earache went from underground death metal to LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND.

What a pivot, mun.

🥃 The Temperance Movement

Soulful blues rock with emotional punch — and big UK fanbases.

🐺 The White Buffalo

Massive voice. Massive heart. Massive songs.
A completely new flavour for Earache.

🕷️ Black Spiders

Like Motörhead drank a gallon of Red Bull.
Beer-soaked riff machines.

🧨 Massive Wagons

Instant singalongs. Huge choruses. Big hair.
Northern rock excellence.

🏴🔥 Those Damn Crows (Early association)

Earache’s support in the early days helped create one of Wales’ loudest modern rock success stories.

C’mon BUTT. 🇬🇧🏴🔥

🎧 CHAPTER VIII

THE 2020s — VINYL EMPIRE, NEW BLOOD, AND FESTIVAL TAKEOVERS

Today, Earache is many things:

  • A successful indie label
  • A vinyl powerhouse
  • A big player at festivals
  • A D2C machine
  • A champion of both heavy and rock audiences

Their new era roster includes:

The Dust Coda – blues-rock excellence
Haggard Cat – rabid noise-rock power duo
Wakedown – modern riff rock
Blake Cateris – folk-punk passion

Plus the massive continued success of Rival Sons, The White Buffalo, and Massive Wagons.

Earache also runs Earache Presents stages at major festivals — Glastonbury included.

From bedroom fanzine to Worthy Farm?
Only in Britain, mun. 🤣🔥

🏴💥 CHAPTER IX

EARACHE’S LEGACY: WHY THE LABEL MATTERS MORE THAN EVER

Let’s break it down:

🌋 They invented genres:

  • Grindcore
  • Goregrind
  • Melodic death metal (via At The Gates US distro)
  • Industrial metal foundations
  • Stoner/doom revival
  • The 2010s rock revival movement

🧨 They took risks nobody else would:

From Anal Cunt to Godflesh to Akercocke to Rival Sons — every era has curveballs.

🔥 They kept extreme music alive:

Without Earache, extreme metal might’ve stayed in basements forever.

🎸 They championed musicians other labels ignored:

Carcass, Napalm Death, Sleep, Bolt Thrower — all would be footnotes instead of foundations.

🕶️ They’re still fiercely independent:

No corporate suits.
No bland committee decisions.
Just pure passion and noise.

🏴 And they’ve always supported the UK scene:

From Newport’s Dub War to Welsh up-and-comers like Those Damn Crows — Earache has always backed homegrown chaos.

🤘 FINAL CHAPTER

EARACHE RECORDS: THE LABEL THAT MADE THE WORLD LOUDER

From Scum to Slaughter of the Soul, from Sleep to Rival Sons, from Death Metal to Modern Rock, Earache’s story is the story of four decades of extreme music evolution.

They took a risk on the noisy, the weird, the heavy, the avant-garde, the uncommercial, the unhinged — and turned it into culture.

Earache didn’t just sign bands.
Earache changed music.
Simple as.

So next time you crank a riff that scares the neighbour’s dog, remember:
There’s a good chance Earache had something to do with it.

Diolch Digby.
Diolch Earache.
And diolch butt — for reading the loudest history lesson known to Cymru. 🏴🤘🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
