If thereโs one band that laughs in the face of โnormal rock history,โ itโs GWAR โ the intergalactic, blood-spewing, crowd-soaking chaos machine thatโs been terrifying parents and delighting fans for over 40 years. ๐ช๐ญ
Recently, Blothar the Berserker (aka Michael Bishop), the bandโs front-thrashing frontman, sat down with Full Metal Jackie and offered his take on how GWARโs legacy should be remembered. Spoiler: itโs not just about spraying fans with fake bodily fluids (though thatโs definitely part of the fun).
๐ฉธ GWARโs Identity: More Than Just Shock Rock
Blothar made it clear โ GWAR isnโt just a band, theyโre a concept, a living theatre of heavy metal lunacy. While other groups were writing โdeepโ songs about love and pain, GWAR were building latex monster suits, welding fake weapons, and creating live shows that feel like Mad Max meets Saturday morning cartoons on a bad acid trip.
โWe created a whole world,โ Blothar explained. โGWAR is bigger than any one person whoโs been in it. Itโs art, music, comedy, and theatre all smashed together.โ ๐ญ๐ธ
๐ค 40 Years of Alien Mayhem
When asked about the milestone, Blothar didnโt sound like someone celebrating a career โ more like a warrior looking back at a trail of destruction. From their early Richmond, Virginia art-punk days to Grammy nominations and global tours, GWAR have weathered lineup changes, tragedy (including the loss of legendary front-beast Oderus Urungus), and changing musical climates.
Yet, the band never stopped doing what they do best: making fans laugh, scream, and leave a gig looking like they lost a fight with a ketchup truck. ๐๐
๐ค What Legacy Means to GWAR
For Blothar, GWARโs legacy is about freedom โ the freedom to be utterly ridiculous, to push art to its extremes, and to prove that heavy metal can be fun without losing its teeth.
โOur legacy is that we gave people permission to not take it all so seriously,โ he said. โWe made space for humour in metal. And at the same time, we made people think.โ
In other words: GWAR is proof that satire, filth, and fury can live happily in the same mosh pit.
๐ช The Future of GWAR
Even after 40 years, Blothar insists the band isnโt slowing down. With new music, comic books, festivals, and of course their legendary live shows, GWARโs story is still being written โ preferably in blood, slime, and questionable bodily fluids.
Blothar summed it up best:
โGWARโs legacy is that we survived. Weโre still here. Weโre still dangerous. And weโre still gonna spray you with blood.โ ๐ฉธ๐ฅ
๐ง Final Riff
GWARโs legacy isnโt about record sales or chart positions โ itโs about creating one of the most unique and outrageous experiences in music history. Theyโve turned shock into art, parody into passion, and concerts into carnage.
And honestly, butt, after four decades, if youโre leaving a GWAR gig in a clean shirtโฆ did you even go? ๐ค๐
