Right then Riff Report crew… grab a pint, pull up a stool, and raise a glass — because one of the most legendary songwriters ever to stagger out of a smoky pub and onto a stage is about to be celebrated in proper style.
A massive all-star tribute album honouring The Pogues icon Shane MacGowan is officially on the way — and the guest list reads like the VIP bar at the loudest music awards ceremony in history.
The album is called 20th Century Paddy — The Songs of Shane MacGowan, and it’s set to land this November with an absolutely stacked lineup of musicians, actors, poets and beautiful musical misfits all paying tribute to the late Irish legend.
And honestly… the names involved are ridiculous.
🎤 The Guest List Is Absolutely Wild
Leading the charge are Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Depp, both stepping in to honour the man who wrote some of the most emotional, chaotic and poetic songs ever committed to tape.
But they’re far from the only big names involved.
Also appearing on the album are:
🔥 Tom Waits
🔥 Hozier
🔥 Jessie Buckley
🔥 Primal Scream
🔥 The Libertines
🔥 The Jesus and Mary Chain
🔥 Dropkick Murphys
🔥 Glen Hansard
🔥 Imelda May
🔥 Steve Earle
🔥 Lisa O’Neill
🔥 Camille O’Sullivan
Basically… if your band has ever been influenced by Irish folk chaos, punk attitude, or poetic storytelling, chances are someone from that world is turning up on this record.
It’s less of an album and more of a musical wake for one of the greatest songwriters of the last century.
🎸 First Track Already Dropped
The first track from the tribute is already doing the rounds, with Bruce Springsteen delivering a version of the Pogues classic A Rainy Night in Soho.
And if you know that song… you know it hits right in the emotional ribs.
Springsteen described Shane MacGowan as:
“Raw, hilarious, no apologies and profound.”
Which is probably the most accurate three-word biography Shane MacGowan could ever get.
🍀 The Meaning Behind “20th Century Paddy”
The album title actually comes from something beautifully fitting.
“20th Century Paddy” was a project Shane MacGowan had always wanted to create himself.
So rather than just another tribute compilation thrown together by record executives, this one feels more like friends, admirers and fellow troublemakers finishing something Shane had dreamed up.
That makes the whole project feel a lot more personal.
And knowing the chaos MacGowan thrived on… you can bet he’d appreciate the sheer madness of this lineup.
💚 A Tribute That Gives Back
In a move that feels perfectly in tune with MacGowan’s spirit, 50% of the artist royalties from the album will go to Dublin Simon Community, a charity supporting people experiencing homelessness.
Shane supported the organisation during his lifetime, so this tribute isn’t just about celebrating the music — it’s also about helping people who need it.
That’s a proper legacy.
🍻 Why Shane MacGowan Still Matters
Shane MacGowan wasn’t just another frontman.
He was a poet disguised as a punk, a songwriter who could mix heartbreak, politics, humour, Irish folklore and drunken philosophy into something that sounded like it had always existed.
Songs like:
🎻 Fairytale of New York
🎻 Dirty Old Town
🎻 A Rainy Night in Soho
🎻 If I Should Fall From Grace With God
…aren’t just songs.
They’re stories you can sing with strangers at 2am.
And that’s the magic of Shane MacGowan.
🤘 Riff Report Verdict
If this album captures even half the soul, grit and emotional punch of Shane MacGowan’s original songs, it’s going to be something really special.
An all-star tribute record can sometimes feel like a polite industry nod.
This one?
This feels like a full-on musical pub wake with legends passing the mic and shouting the chorus together.
And honestly… that’s probably exactly how Shane would’ve wanted it.
Raise a glass, crank the speakers, and get ready for 20th Century Paddy — The Songs of Shane MacGowan this November.
Sláinte, legend. 🍀🤘
