Every band has that one record. The one nobody talks about, the one fans pretend didnโ€™t happen, the one buried deep in the discount bin next to the Vengaboys CD. Rock and metal, for all their glory, arenโ€™t immune to absolute stinkers. Whether it was dodgy production, chasing trends, or just a collective mental breakdown in the studio, these 12 albums go down as crimes against riffs.

Cโ€™mon then, letโ€™s crack open the vault of shameโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ

1. Metallica โ€“ St. Anger (2003)

Ah, St. Anger. The sound of Lars Ulrich hitting a saucepan and James Hetfield screaming like he stubbed his toe. Fans expected a thrash revival; instead, they got 75 minutes of raw frustration โ€” literally, it sounds like a therapy session recorded on GarageBand.

  • The Snare from Hell:ย People STILL joke about this drum sound. Like someone booting a wheelie bin down a Cardiff alley at 3am. ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ๐Ÿฅ
  • No Guitar Solos?!:ย Kirk Hammett basically sat in the corner while Hetfield shouted about โ€œfrantic tic tic tic toc.โ€
  • The Documentary Factor:ย Some Kind of Monsterย showed the band in crisis โ€” St. Anger became the sonic diary of four millionaires falling apart.

Fan Reactions: โ€œEven Napster didnโ€™t deserve this punishment.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œFranticโ€ โ€“ more like franticly reaching for the skip button.

2. Guns Nโ€™ Roses โ€“ Chinese Democracy (2008)

15 years. ยฃ10 million+ budget. Dozens of musicians. And the result? Axl Rose mumbling over sterile production that sounds like a bad Playstation 2 soundtrack.

  • Expectations vs Reality:ย After waiting sinceย Use Your Illusion, fans wanted sleaze and swagger. Instead, they got overblown prog-industrial leftovers.
  • The Title Joke:ย The album took so long to come out that โ€œChinese Democracyโ€ was the ultimate punchline: โ€œItโ€™ll happen when Chinese Democracy does!โ€ (Spoiler: it actually did โ€” and it was pants).

Fan Reactions: People queued at midnight, bought it out of curiosityโ€ฆ then quietly slid it to the back of the shelf.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œRiad Nโ€™ The Bedouinsโ€ โ€“ try singing that chorus without cringing.

3. Black Sabbath โ€“ Forbidden (1995)

Ice-T guesting on โ€œThe Illusion of Powerโ€? Cozy Powell buried in a muddy mix? This was the โ€œhangoverโ€ album nobody asked for.

  • Awful Production:ย Tony Iommi himself admitted it sounded dreadful. Like Sabbath recorded in a shed with the mic in the neighbourโ€™s kitchen.
  • The End of an Era:ย Fans knew it was bad when they didnโ€™t even bother to slag it off โ€” they just ignored it.

Fan Reactions: โ€œI love Sabbathโ€ฆ but not that much.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œRusty Angelsโ€ โ€“ exactly what it sounds like.

4. KISS โ€“ Music from โ€˜The Elderโ€™ (1981)

KISS, the masters of glam and excess, decided to go prog with a concept album about a mythical knightly order. Honestly, butt, itโ€™s like if Lord of the Rings was written by drunk clowns in face paint.

  • Zero Party Vibes:ย No โ€œDetroit Rock City,โ€ just moody nonsense about quests.
  • The Label Panicked:ย They released it with different tracklists in the US and Europe, hoping someone,ย anyone, would get it.

Fan Reactions: โ€œI joined the KISS Army for rock โ€™nโ€™ roll, not Dungeons & Dragons.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œOdysseyโ€ โ€“ not the epic journey youโ€™re hoping for.

5. Megadeth โ€“ Risk (1999)

When your album title becomes a meme for โ€œbad career move,โ€ you know itโ€™s grim. Mustaine decided to chase radio rock, but instead it sounded like Dire Straits on a Red Bull bender.

  • Trying to be Mainstream:ย Instead of riffs, we got soft-rock filler.
  • Daveโ€™s Own Verdict:ย Even Mustaine admitted: โ€œIf you want to take risks, donโ€™t call your albumย Risk.โ€

Fan Reactions: Metalheads screamed: โ€œThis isnโ€™t why we wore denim jackets, Dave!โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œCrush โ€™Emโ€ โ€“ famously used in Universal Soldier and then booed live.

6. Mรถtley Crรผe โ€“ Generation Swine (1997)

Fresh off the alt-rock explosion, Crรผe thought theyโ€™d reinvent themselves. Instead, they sounded like dads trying to crash a Limp Bizkit party.

  • Vince Neil Returns:ย But the magic was gone, replaced with electro-gimmicks and dodgy production.
  • Cringe Factor:ย Songs like โ€œBrandonโ€ (a lullaby to Tommy Leeโ€™s kid) โ€“ imagine playing that in a stadium. Fans went for a pint.

Fan Reactions: โ€œWe wanted Girls, Girls, Girls, not lullabies and weird techno.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œGlitterโ€ โ€“ it ainโ€™t Bowie.

7. Van Halen โ€“ Van Halen III (1998)

Enter Gary Cherone. Exit the bandโ€™s career momentum. This album bombed harder than a karaoke night in Bridgend Wetherspoons.

  • Identity Crisis:ย Neither glam, nor serious rock, nor fun. Justโ€ฆ nothing.
  • The Numbers Donโ€™t Lie:ย It sold poorly and fans barely remember it โ€” apart from how much they hated it.

Fan Reactions: โ€œItโ€™s not Van Halen, itโ€™s Van Who?โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œHow Many Say Iโ€ โ€“ Eddie on lead vocals. Oh dear.

8. Lou Reed & Metallica โ€“ Lulu (2011)

This oneโ€™s legendary for all the wrong reasons. Lou Reed reciting German expressionist poetry while Metallica chugged behind him.

  • The Meme Album:ย โ€œI am the table.โ€ Enough said.
  • Critical Suicide:ย Universally panned. Metallica fans hated it. Lou Reed fans hated it. Only masochists revisit it.

Fan Reactions: โ€œI played it once. That was enough.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œThe Viewโ€ โ€“ the birthplace of โ€œI AM THE TABLE!โ€

9. Def Leppard โ€“ X (2002)

The band who gave us Hysteria suddenly decided they wanted to be Backstreet Boys. The guitars were AWOL, replaced with polished pop sheen.

  • Boyband Leppard:ย Leppard were always glossy, but this was basically Steps with Union Jacks.
  • Why, Lads, Why?!:ย Fans still argue this was a betrayal.

Fan Reactions: โ€œThis isnโ€™t Pour Some Sugar on Meโ€ฆ this is pour some syrupy pap on me.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œUnbelievableโ€ โ€“ youโ€™ll wish it wasnโ€™t real.

10. Poison โ€“ Native Tongue (1993)

Poison tried to ditch the hairspray and go โ€œserious blues.โ€ Trouble is, nobody bought Bret Michaels in a cowboy hat singing the blues.

  • Image vs Sound:ย Like seeing Mr Blobby join Fleetwood Mac.
  • Commercial Freefall:ย Glam was dying, and this album shoved them into the grave.

Fan Reactions: โ€œGive me the cheesy party songs back!โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œTheatre of the Soulโ€ โ€“ more like theatre of the cringe.

11. Queen โ€“ Hot Space (1982)

Yes, the gods themselves stumbled. Freddie adored disco at the time, but Brian Mayโ€™s guitar barely makes an appearance.

  • Post-Another One Bites the Dustย Hubris:ย They doubled down on funk. Fans wanted arena rock.
  • Freddieโ€™s Later Reflection:ย Even he admitted it wasnโ€™t their finest moment.

Fan Reactions: โ€œWe didnโ€™t come for Chic, we came for Queen!โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: โ€œBody Languageโ€ โ€“ letโ€™s just say the dancefloor was empty.

12. Limp Bizkit โ€“ Results May Vary (2003)

Nu-metal was dying, and this album was the coffin nail. Fred Durst covering Behind Blue Eyes โ€” but leaving in the robotic โ€œLIIIIEHHHHโ€ voice. Unforgivable.

  • Directionless Mess:ย No Wes Borland, no riffs, no fun. Just Durst whining.
  • Critical Evisceration:ย Even Kerrang! couldnโ€™t spin it.

Fan Reactions: โ€œWe broke stuff in 1999. By 2003, we just broke the CD player.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Worst Offender: That bloody Behind Blue Eyes cover.

โšก Final Thoughts:

Every band stumbles, mun. Sometimes itโ€™s a dodgy experimental phase, sometimes itโ€™s pressure from labels, and sometimes itโ€™s just midlife crisis dressed in leather trousers. The important thing? Most of these bands bounced back, proving that even the worst riffs canโ€™t kill true legends.

So next time you hear someone defending St. Anger, buy โ€™em a pint โ€” theyโ€™ve been through enough. ๐Ÿป
