Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are celebrating 50 years with a deep dive into the formative years of one of America’s greatest rock bands, as the new Origins 1971–1978 box set opens the vaults with 51 tracks, rare recordings, previously unheard material, early live performances and brand-new mixes — while the rarities collection No Sleep Til L.A. will also be released as a standalone album.

Before American Girl became a rock ’n’ roll institution…

Before arenas.

Before Damn The Torpedoes.

Before Tom Petty became one of the most recognisable voices in American music…

There was Mudcrutch, small clubs, early recording sessions and a young songwriter figuring out exactly what his music was supposed to become.

That era is now getting the full archival treatment with Origins 1971–1978, a huge new collection documenting Tom Petty’s first eight years as a recording artist and the birth of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

The collection arrives on 6 November 2026.

And for serious Petty fans?

This thing is absolutely stuffed.

🎂 Celebrating 50 Years Of The Heartbreakers

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed in 1976, meaning 2026 marks the band’s 50th anniversary.

Rather than simply repackaging the greatest hits for another lap around the record shops, Origins 1971–1978 goes right back to the beginning.

The collection explores the period immediately before and after the Heartbreakers came together, tracing Petty’s development from his earlier work with Mudcrutch into the band that would eventually become a cornerstone of American rock.

It’s less:

“Here are the songs everybody already knows.”

And more:

“Here’s how those songs — and that band — actually happened.”

Much more interesting.

💿 51 Tracks Across The Early Years

The full collection contains 51 tracks, including 27 unreleased, live, extended or previously unheard recordings.

Everything has been newly mixed from the original multitrack recordings by longtime Tom Petty producer and engineer Ryan Ulyate.

The music pulls together the different influences already running through Petty’s songwriting during the 1970s.

Rock ’n’ roll.

Country.

Folk.

Soul.

And eventually some of the sharper, leaner energy associated with punk and new wave.

That combination would become one of the reasons the Heartbreakers never fitted comfortably inside just one genre.

They were too rock for country.

Too rootsy for punk.

Too sharp for soft rock.

And considerably too stubborn to care.

🌴 No Sleep Til L.A. Is The Heart Of The Collection

Perhaps the most exciting part of the whole project is No Sleep Til L.A..

The 12-track rarities collection follows Petty’s journey from the earliest Mudcrutch recordings through to the formation of the Heartbreakers.

And importantly, fans won’t need to buy the entire box set to get it.

No Sleep Til L.A. is also receiving its own standalone release on CD and vinyl, including a limited-edition zoetrope pressing.

The collection features seven previously unreleased recordings and five rare tracks.

Now we’re talking.

🎶 No Sleep Til L.A. Tracklist

The standalone album brings together a fascinating selection of early Petty material:

  1. Parade Of Loons
  2. You’re Gonna Learn
  3. Another Lonely Night
  4. I Can’t Fight It – 2026 Mix
  5. Depot Street – 2026 Mix
  6. Sin City
  7. Wild Eyes – 2026 Mix
  8. Unheard Of Kind Of Hero
  9. Up In Mississippi Tonight – 2026 Mix
  10. Satisfy Yourself
  11. Since You Said You Love Me – 2026 Mix
  12. Long Way

For fans interested in the road between Mudcrutch and the Heartbreakers, this is basically the archaeological dig.

Bring a brush.

Possibly a fedora.

🎸 Previously Unreleased Heartbreakers Material Finally Emerges

Among the biggest attractions are previously unreleased Heartbreakers recordings including “Parade Of Loons” and “Sin City.”

There are also previously unheard songs including “Unheard Of Kind Of Hero” and “Satisfy Yourself.”

These aren’t simply alternate takes of tracks everybody has owned for decades.

They provide additional pieces of the puzzle.

Songs that didn’t make the records.

Ideas that developed differently.

Material that sat in the archive while the band’s catalogue grew around it.

For hardcore fans, that’s exactly the kind of stuff box sets should contain.

🐊 Mudcrutch Gets Proper Attention

Before the Heartbreakers, there was Mudcrutch.

Formed in Gainesville, Florida, the band included Tom Petty and future Heartbreakers members Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, planting the seeds for everything that would follow.

Mudcrutch moved to Los Angeles chasing a record deal, but things didn’t initially work out as planned.

The band eventually split.

Petty kept going.

And out of those circumstances, the Heartbreakers emerged.

Origins 1971–1978 gives that transitional period proper space instead of treating it like a footnote.

New 2026 mixes of early Mudcrutch recordings including “Depot Street,” “Wild Eyes” and “Up In Mississippi Tonight” appear on No Sleep Til L.A.

That makes the record particularly interesting for anyone fascinated by the development of Petty’s songwriting.

🚗 From Florida To Los Angeles

That journey from Florida to California became central to Tom Petty’s story.

He wasn’t born into the Los Angeles music machine.

He had to get there.

Mudcrutch travelled west believing something could happen.

Something eventually did.

Just not necessarily in the form they expected.

That experience — leaving home, chasing music, getting knocked back and continuing anyway — became almost perfectly suited to the kind of songs Petty would eventually write.

Restless.

Defiant.

Romantic without becoming sentimental.

Always moving.

🎤 The Debut Album Gets A 50th Anniversary Edition

The box also includes a new 50th Anniversary Edition of Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.

Originally released in 1976, the album introduced songs that would become foundational to the band’s identity.

Most obviously:

American Girl.

And:

Breakdown.

Both now sound so inseparable from classic-rock history that it’s easy to forget there was once a time when nobody knew them.

The anniversary edition features new 2026 mixes alongside extended versions of selected tracks.

That includes an extended “American Girl”, which should immediately have Petty obsessives reaching for headphones.

🇺🇸 ‘American Girl’ Became Immortal

It’s difficult to overstate what “American Girl” became.

That opening guitar sound alone is instantly recognisable.

Mike Campbell and Tom Petty created something bright, urgent and strangely nostalgic at the same time.

The song didn’t initially become an enormous American chart hit.

Didn’t matter.

It endured.

Radio kept playing it.

Fans kept discovering it.

Bands kept covering it.

And eventually it became one of those songs that feels like it has simply always existed.

Hearing an extended version from the original sessions offers another window into how that classic was assembled.

⚡ You’re Gonna Get It! Gets The Same Treatment

The band’s second album, You’re Gonna Get It!, is also included in a new 50th Anniversary Edition.

Tracks such as I Need To Know and Listen To Her Heart helped sharpen the Heartbreakers’ identity.

The sound was becoming tighter.

More immediate.

And increasingly confident.

The new edition includes 2026 mixes and extended versions, giving listeners a chance to hear familiar material with more of the original recordings restored and exposed.

For recording nerds?

Cancel your evening plans.

🎙️ Live From The Record Plant 1977 Arrives In Full

Another major component is Live From The Record Plant 1977.

Recorded in Sausalito, California on 23 April 1977, the performance captures the Heartbreakers at an incredibly early point.

No decades of arena experience.

No legacy-act comfort zone.

Just a young band trying to prove itself.

The set includes performances of:

American Girl

Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It)

Luna

Listen To Her Heart

I Need To Know

Strangered In The Night

and more.

There’s also (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.

Because apparently even young Tom Petty understood that every proper rock band eventually has to play “Route 66”.

It’s the law.

📺 The BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test Performance Is Included

The larger editions also dig into Petty’s early television history.

A DVD features an enhanced version of the Heartbreakers’ 1978 performance for the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test.

For British fans especially, that programme occupies a legendary place in music history.

Long before YouTube could instantly beam performances around the world, appearances like this mattered.

A lot.

The set includes the band performing songs such as:

Anything That’s Rock ’N’ Roll

Fooled Again

I Need To Know

Breakdown

Listen To Her Heart

You’re Gonna Get It

American Girl

and more.

It captures a band already developing the cool, no-frills stage presence that would become part of its identity.

No need for thirty dancers.

No giant mechanical spider.

Just songs.

🔊 There’s A Blu-Ray For The Audiophiles

Anyone who enjoys staring intensely at speaker placement while saying things like “the separation is remarkable” has not been forgotten.

The box set includes a Blu-ray Audio disc featuring all 51 tracks in high-resolution stereo, Atmos and 5.1 immersive mixes.

Which means you can now hear 1970s Tom Petty coming from considerably more directions than Tom Petty ever expected in 1976.

Progress.

📚 The Physical Editions Go Deep

The larger physical packages aren’t stopping at records and discs either.

The 5LP box includes an 88-page fanzine featuring archival photographs and liner notes from David Fricke, Bud Scoppa and Bob Harris.

There are also extras including a poster, archival material, collector pieces and recreated Mudcrutch memorabilia.

The 4CD edition includes its own expanded booklet and the accompanying DVD and Blu-ray material.

Then there’s the Uber Deluxe version.

Because apparently “deluxe” wasn’t deluxe enough.

🤯 And Yes, There’s An Uber Deluxe Edition

The limited 5LP Uber Deluxe package takes the whole thing into serious collector territory.

Only 500 copies have been created.

Alongside the music, it adds a custom case, archival reproductions and further collectable material.

This is the version for the Tom Petty fan who looks at an ordinary 5LP box set and thinks:

“Seems a bit restrained.”

Fair play.

Record collecting is a disease and we support you.

🎥 ‘Parade Of Loons’ Opens Another Door Into The Archives

One of the newly unearthed tracks leading the campaign is “Parade Of Loons.”

The song offers another glimpse of the Heartbreakers before the story everybody knows had fully taken shape.

That’s arguably the biggest appeal of archive projects done properly.

They don’t rewrite history.

They add texture to it.

We know where Tom Petty eventually ended up.

That makes hearing the uncertainty, experimentation and abandoned paths along the way even more compelling.

🎸 Mike Campbell And Benmont Tench Were Already Essential

Petty’s name naturally dominates the conversation, but the Heartbreakers were never simply anonymous backing musicians.

Mike Campbell became one of rock’s most tasteful and identifiable guitarists.

Benmont Tench developed a keyboard style that could transform a song without demanding attention.

Those relationships were already taking shape during this early period.

You can hear a musical language being constructed.

Petty brings the words and attitude.

Campbell finds exactly the right guitar part.

Tench fills the gaps.

Nobody overplays.

That became the Heartbreakers formula.

Simple on paper.

Extremely difficult to replicate.

🖤 Tom Petty Always Sounded Like Tom Petty

One of the strangest things about revisiting Petty’s earliest recordings is how quickly his identity appeared.

That voice.

That phrasing.

That stubbornness.

Even before the superstar years, the essential character was already there.

Petty wasn’t a vocalist in the traditional powerhouse sense.

He didn’t need to be.

You heard one line and knew exactly who it was.

Great rock singers aren’t always the people capable of hitting the most notes.

Sometimes they’re the people nobody else could convincingly imitate.

Tom Petty absolutely belonged in that category.

🔥 The Early Years Matter Because The Struggle Was Real

It’s tempting to look back at someone like Petty and imagine the success was inevitable.

It wasn’t.

Bands break up.

Deals collapse.

Records underperform.

Money disappears.

Musicians go home.

Petty simply kept moving.

By the time Damn The Torpedoes exploded in 1979, he’d already spent years fighting his way towards that moment.

Origins 1971–1978 stops just before that commercial breakthrough.

And that’s exactly what makes the timeframe interesting.

This is the story before everything became obvious.

🎶 Not Just Another Greatest-Hits Package

Tom Petty’s catalogue isn’t short of compilations.

So another collection of Free Fallin’, Refugee, Learning To Fly and I Won’t Back Down wasn’t exactly necessary.

Origins offers something far more valuable.

Context.

It shows the route.

Mudcrutch.

Early Heartbreakers.

Studio experiments.

Live performances.

Television appearances.

Songs that disappeared.

Songs that became classics.

That’s how you celebrate an anniversary properly.

Open the vault.

🕯️ Petty’s Archive Continues To Reveal New Chapters

Tom Petty died in 2017, leaving behind an extraordinary body of work.

Since then, carefully curated archival releases have continued revealing music that remained unfinished, unreleased or hidden away during his lifetime.

The challenge with any posthumous catalogue is respecting the artist rather than simply emptying every cupboard because something might sell.

Projects like Origins are most worthwhile when they tell a coherent story.

This one has a very clear story to tell:

How Tom Petty became Tom Petty.

💿 Origins 1971–1978 – What’s Included

At the centre of the full collection are five distinct parts:

  • No Sleep Til L.A. – rare and previously unreleased recordings tracing Mudcrutch through the formation of the Heartbreakers
  • Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers – 50th Anniversary Edition
  • You’re Gonna Get It! – 50th Anniversary Edition
  • Live From The Record Plant 1977
  • The Cut Out Bin – additional rarities

Add the BBC performance, immersive audio mixes and archival extras, and you’ve got something significantly more substantial than a couple of remastered albums in a fancy cardboard box.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Origins 1971–1978 looks like exactly the kind of anniversary project Tom Petty’s early years deserve.

It celebrates the classics without pretending the classics appeared from nowhere.

Before American Girl, there were other songs.

Before the Heartbreakers, there was Mudcrutch.

Before superstardom, there were long journeys, rejected plans, strange sessions and musicians simply trying to figure out what worked.

And No Sleep Til L.A. might be the jewel in the whole thing.

A standalone collection of 12 rare and previously unheard recordings, including seven previously unreleased tracks, means even fans who don’t want the full archival monster can still dig directly into the formative years.

For everyone else?

Clear some shelf space.

Origins 1971–1978 arrives on 6 November 2026 — and fifty years after the Heartbreakers began, the vault is still giving up treasures. 🎸🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
