Imagine being Mick Jagger, one of the most recognisable frontmen ever to strut across a stage, and still having one colossal rock โnโ roll regret hanging over you.
Not a forgotten lyric.
Not a pair of trousers that split halfway through โStart Me Upโ.
Not even an ill-advised backstage kebab at three in the morning.
Nope. Jaggerโs regret is much bigger than that: he never met Elvis Presley.
And apparently, we can partly blame John Lennon. ๐ธ๐
The Rolling Stones frontman has revealed that Lennon advised him against meeting Elvis, warning that getting too close to one of his musical heroes could destroy the image he had built up in his mind.
During an appearance on the Conan OโBrien Needs a Friend podcast, Jagger recalled Lennon telling him:
โYou should never meet your heroes.โ
Jagger listened.

A Meeting That Never Happened
Elvis Presley was not merely another famous singer.
He was The King of Rock โnโ Roll โ the hip-shaking, parent-terrifying, television-revolutionising superstar who helped transform popular music forever.
Before The Beatles conquered America and before The Rolling Stones became the worldโs most dangerous rock band, Elvis had already kicked down the doors.
His voice, attitude, fashion and electrifying stage presence inspired countless young musicians, including many of the British artists who would eventually launch the rock explosion of the 1960s.
Jagger was one of them.
But when the opportunity arose to potentially meet Elvis, the Stones singer hesitated. Lennonโs warning had apparently lodged itself firmly inside his head.
Jagger admitted that he wanted to preserve his idealised image of Presley rather than risk discovering that the real man might not live up to the legend.
At the time, perhaps that seemed sensible.

Why Did Lennon Warn Him?
John Lennonโs advice appears to have been shaped by his own encounter with Presley.
The Beatles met Elvis at his Los Angeles home in August 1965, during the height of Beatlemania.
On paper, it should have been the ultimate meeting of musical royalty.
Elvis was the superstar who had inspired The Beatles to pick up guitars, while the Fab Four had become the new global sensation threatening to steal his crown.
Yet Lennon reportedly came away disappointed.
Meeting the real Elvis apparently failed to match the almost mythical figure Lennon had created in his imagination. He later repeated the warning to Jagger, suggesting that some heroes were better admired from a distance. (The Daily Beastโ )
To be fair, you can understand the logic.
When somebody has influenced your entire life, meeting them must feel like opening a mystery Christmas present while knowing there is a chance it contains socks.
But come on, mun โ it was Elvis Presley!
Even an awkward cup of tea with The King would have become one of the greatest stories in rock history.

JUST IMAGINE THE CONVERSATION
The missed meeting leaves fans with one enormous question:
What would Mick Jagger and Elvis Presley have talked about?
Would they have discussed stage moves?
Would Elvis have complimented Mickโs dancing?
Would Mick have asked Elvis about his early Sun Records sessions?
Would they have shared stories about fame, screaming crowds and the pressures of becoming global icons?
Or would they have simply stood awkwardly beside a bowl of peanuts while somebody struggled to find something polite to say?
Whatever happened, the photograph alone would have been priceless.
Elvis Presley and Mick Jagger standing together would have represented two enormous generations of rock โnโ roll history colliding in one room.
Instead, the meeting remains one of musicโs great lost possibilities.

EVEN LEGENDS HAVE HEROES
The story is also a brilliant reminder that even the biggest rock stars began as fans.
Before Mick Jagger became the swaggering frontman of The Rolling Stones, he was a young music obsessive listening to American blues, rhythm and blues and early rock โnโ roll records.
Elvis was one of the artists who helped make that entire musical world feel exciting, dangerous and possible.
Jagger would eventually become a hero to millions himself, influencing generations of singers with his unmistakable voice, restless energy and strutting stage presence.
Yet beneath all that fame, he still carried the same nervousness many ordinary fans experience when faced with the prospect of meeting somebody they admire.
That is strangely comforting.
You can sell millions of records, headline stadiums and spend more than six decades fronting one of historyโs biggest bands โ and still worry about saying something daft in front of Elvis.

Jagger also spoke about his relationship with Lennon and the famous rivalry between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Although newspapers and fans often treated the bands like opposing armies, the reality was far more complicated.
The musicians knew one another, socialised and occasionally collaborated, even while enjoying a healthy amount of competition and sarcastic banter.
Jagger remembered Lennon as someone who was quick-witted and ready to challenge anything he considered foolish.
That competitive relationship helped create one of rockโs most fascinating eras, with both groups pushing themselves creatively while the media gleefully encouraged fans to choose sides.

Were you Stones?
Couldnโt you just enjoy both without starting a punch-up beside the jukebox?

Elvis Presley died in 1977, meaning Jaggerโs opportunity disappeared forever.
That finality is probably what makes the regret sting.
There would be no later tour, awards ceremony or backstage gathering where the two men could finally shake hands.
Once Elvis was gone, Jagger was left only with the thought that he could have met one of his heroes โ but chose not to.
It is an extraordinary admission from a performer who has met, worked with and befriended many of the most famous musicians in modern history.

Plenty of people have met their heroes and walked away wishing they had stayed at home. Sometimes the person behind the legend simply cannot compete with the perfect version living inside your head.
But every meeting is different.
Lennon may have felt disappointed by his encounter with Elvis, but that does not mean Jagger would have felt the same way.
Perhaps they would have connected instantly.
Perhaps Elvis would have admired Jaggerโs rebellious energy.
Perhaps they would have swapped stories, played music or created one of the greatest backstage photographs ever taken.
We will never know.

Mick Jagger had the chance to meet The King, listened to John Lennon instead and spent decades regretting it.
The lesson here?
Respect your matesโ advice โ but when somebody offers you the chance to meet Elvis Presley, get in the car immediately. ๐๐จ๐
