From California swagger and skyscraper-sized choruses to acoustic curveballs, bluesy weirdness and enough Diamond Dave madness to frighten the neighbours — we’re ranking David Lee Roth’s greatest solo tracks.

There are frontmen.

There are rock stars.

And then there’s David Lee bloody Roth.

The man didn’t merely walk onto a stage. He arrived.

Usually while performing a flying kick.

Possibly wearing trousers that could be detected from space.

Almost certainly yelling something completely unnecessary.

😂🎤🔥

After helping turn Van Halen into one of the biggest rock bands on Earth, Diamond Dave stepped away from the mothership in the mid-’80s and immediately proved something rather important:

He didn’t need to stop being ridiculous just because Eddie Van Halen wasn’t standing beside him.

In fact, he somehow became even more David Lee Roth.

His solo career gave us Steve Vai shredding like his guitar had personally offended him, Billy Sheehan abusing bass strings, Gregg Bissonette battering drums and Dave standing in the middle of it all like the ringmaster of rock’s most expensive travelling circus.

But beyond the videos, costumes, one-liners and general Diamond Dave lunacy, there are some absolutely cracking songs.

So grab the shades, practise your high kicks and warn everyone downstairs.

🎸🔥 THESE ARE DAVID LEE ROTH’S 20 GREATEST SOLO SONGS — RANKED!

20. 🏙️ A LIL’ AIN’T ENOUGH

Album: A Little Ain’t Enough (1991)

We kick things off with the title track from Dave’s third full-length solo album.

By 1991, grunge was beginning to gather on the horizon, but nobody had apparently informed Diamond Dave.

Thank God.

This is unapologetic, oversized American hard rock — big guitars, bigger attitude and Dave sounding like he’s just driven through the front doors of the Sunset Strip in a convertible.

Subtle?

Absolutely not.

Would we want it any other way?

Not a chance, butt.

19. 🔥 IT’S SHOWTIME!

Album: A Little Ain’t Enough (1991)

If anyone was genetically engineered to shout “IT’S SHOWTIME!”, it was David Lee Roth.

This is basically Diamond Dave’s entire philosophy squeezed into one rock song.

The guitars scream.

The drums thunder.

Dave struts around vocally like he owns the building.

It’s gloriously excessive.

18. 🌴 SENSIBLE SHOES

Album: A Little Ain’t Enough (1991)

One of the more interesting moments from Dave’s early-’90s output.

Rather than simply trying to out-shred everyone within a five-mile radius, Sensible Shoes brings blues, swing and plenty of sleazy personality.

And let’s be fair.

David Lee Roth releasing a song called Sensible Shoes is a bit like Motörhead releasing one called Quiet Evening With A Cup Of Tea.

😂

17. 💥 SHE’S MY MACHINE

Album: Your Filthy Little Mouth (1994)

By 1994 the musical landscape had changed dramatically.

Hair metal had been kicked out of the nightclub.

Grunge had stolen its table.

Everyone suddenly owned a flannel shirt.

Dave?

Dave carried on being Dave.

She’s My Machine has a chunky groove and plenty of swagger without simply attempting to recreate his late-’80s sound.

An underrated little belter.

16. 🎭 DAMN GOOD

Album: Skyscraper (1988)

Here’s where things get unexpectedly emotional.

Damn Good shows a completely different side of Roth.

The acoustic opening immediately strips away some of the circus atmosphere, leaving Dave sounding reflective and surprisingly vulnerable.

Steve Vai’s guitar work is gorgeous without overwhelming the song.

Proof that Diamond Dave didn’t always need fireworks.

Sometimes he could simply sing.

And yeah…

It was damn good.

15. 🚗 LADIES’ NITE IN BUFFALO?

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

Now we’re getting filthy.

Not literally.

Behave.

This track has one of the coolest grooves on Eat ’Em and Smile.

Rather than charging out of the speakers at 400mph, it slinks.

Vai plays with remarkable restraint, Sheehan locks into the groove and Dave delivers one of those performances where he sounds like he’s telling you a story at 2am outside a nightclub.

Proper late-night rock ‘n’ roll.

14. 🥁 THE BOTTOM LINE

Album: Skyscraper (1988)

An often-overlooked gem from Skyscraper.

There’s funk, rock, swagger and enough instrumental wizardry to keep guitar nerds rewinding sections repeatedly.

The Roth/Vai era wasn’t simply about technical fireworks.

When that band locked into a groove, they were frighteningly good.

13. 🔥 HOT DOG AND A SHAKE

Album: Skyscraper (1988)

Only David Lee Roth could call a song Hot Dog and a Shake and somehow make it sound dangerous.

😂🌭

This thing absolutely flies.

Steve Vai goes completely bananas, the rhythm section hangs on for dear life and Roth treats the whole thing like an excuse to host a party inside your stereo.

Ridiculous title.

Ridiculous musicianship.

Ridiculously fun.

That’s Diamond Dave.

12. 🎸 GOIN’ CRAZY!

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

“Goin’ Crazy!” may be one of the most appropriately titled David Lee Roth songs ever recorded.

Bright.

Catchy.

Massive chorus.

Absolutely dripping with Californian sunshine.

It’s basically the musical equivalent of wearing sunglasses indoors while drinking something with an umbrella sticking out of it.

11. 🌇 SKYSCRAPER

Album: Skyscraper (1988)

The title track is one of the stranger entries in Roth’s classic catalogue.

Atmospheric, dreamy and almost cinematic, Skyscraper showed that Dave and Steve Vai weren’t afraid to wander outside straightforward hard rock.

It’s weird.

It’s ambitious.

It’s unmistakably late-’80s.

And we bloody love it.

🔥 RIGHT THEN — TOP TEN TIME!

Put the pint somewhere safe.

Things are about to get serious.

Well…

As serious as a David Lee Roth article can possibly get.

10. 🎤 JUST LIKE PARADISE

Album: Skyscraper (1988)

If the late 1980s could be compressed into approximately four minutes of music, it might sound something like this.

Just Like Paradise is enormous.

That chorus is practically designed to blast from car stereos with the windows down.

It’s polished, shamelessly commercial and ridiculously catchy.

Diamond Dave wasn’t hiding from pop hooks.

He was riding them through Hollywood wearing fluorescent trousers.

9. 🚨 STAND UP

Album: Skyscraper (1988)

Synths?

Huge production?

Dave barking instructions at everyone?

Oh yes.

Stand Up captures Roth’s willingness to throw whatever he fancied into the rock ‘n’ roll blender.

The result is pure 1988 excess.

Some people wanted guitars plugged straight into Marshalls.

Dave apparently wanted the entire decade plugged into the mixing desk.

Fair play.

8. 🎸 SHYBOY

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

Now THIS is musicianship.

Originally associated with Billy Sheehan’s Talas days, Shyboy became an absolute monster in the hands of Roth’s solo band.

Sheehan and Vai basically spend the song attempting to melt their respective instruments.

Gregg Bissonette somehow keeps the entire thing moving.

And Roth?

He’s standing on top of the musical tornado yelling.

As you do.

For anyone wondering just how technically ridiculous the Eat ’Em and Smile band was…

Start here.

7. 🌞 THAT’S LIFE

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

Diamond Dave doing Sinatra?

Of course.

Because why wouldn’t he?

😂🍸

Roth’s version of That’s Life closes Eat ’Em and Smile with maximum lounge-lizard swagger.

It’s theatrical, hilarious and somehow completely believable.

You can practically picture Dave wandering through Las Vegas with a martini while Steve Vai waits outside wondering when they’re going back to shredding.

6. 🔥 YANKEE ROSE

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

Now we’re entering legendary territory.

That opening guitar conversation alone deserves a place in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Madness.

Dave talks.

Steve Vai’s guitar answers.

Dave talks again.

Vai responds.

And somewhere a guitar teacher immediately develops a headache.

😂🎸

Then the riff kicks in.

BANG.

Yankee Rose was David Lee Roth announcing that life after Van Halen wasn’t going to involve quietly disappearing.

It was going to involve one of the most technically outrageous bands on the planet.

5. 🎺 I’M EASY

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

Another unexpected cover.

Another reminder that Roth’s musical personality went far beyond straightforward hard rock.

His take on I’m Easy swings, struts and practically winks at you through the speakers.

Dave always had that old-school entertainer DNA buried beneath the screams and spandex.

Part rock frontman.

Part Vegas showman.

Part cartoon character.

Somehow it worked.

4. 🎸 ELEPHANT GUN

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

Good grief.

Elephant Gun is absolute carnage.

Steve Vai sounds possessed.

Billy Sheehan sounds like he’s trying to turn the bass guitar into a weapon.

Gregg Bissonette is hammering away behind them.

And Roth is somehow keeping himself visible amid all the instrumental madness.

Eat ’Em and Smile remains one of the great showcases of virtuoso ’80s hard rock, and this track explains exactly why.

Turn it up.

Then turn it up again.

Your neighbours probably weren’t doing anything important anyway.

🥉 3. TOBACCO ROAD

Album: Eat ’Em and Smile (1986)

Dave takes the classic Tobacco Road and throws it into the Diamond Dave industrial shredder.

What emerges is aggressive, theatrical and packed with personality.

Vai absolutely tears through it.

The rhythm section sounds enormous.

And Roth attacks the vocals like he’s trying to start a bar fight with the song itself.

A cover done properly:

Don’t simply copy it.

Kidnap it and make it yours.

🥈 2. CALIFORNIA GIRLS

EP: Crazy from the Heat (1985)

Yes, it’s a Beach Boys cover.

Yes, we’re putting it at number two.

Come at us.

😂🔥

Because California Girls wasn’t merely a successful David Lee Roth solo single.

It helped establish exactly what a David Lee Roth solo career was going to look like.

Bright colours.

Comedy.

Girls.

Sunshine.

Ridiculous videos.

Dave mugging directly into the camera.

Pure entertainment.

Where Van Halen had been a hard-rock juggernaut, solo Roth embraced the fact that he wasn’t merely a singer.

He was a showman.

The video became an MTV classic and the song remains inseparable from the Diamond Dave image.

But there’s one track we simply couldn’t put anywhere else…

🥇 1. JUST A GIGOLO / I AIN’T GOT NOBODY 🎤💎

EP: Crazy from the Heat (1985)

Was there ever really another choice?

This is peak Diamond Dave.

Before his full departure from Van Halen had completely defined what came next, Roth released Crazy from the Heat and demonstrated that his solo identity could exist far beyond traditional hard rock.

His medley of Just a Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody became one of the defining moments of his career.

Big-band swagger.

Comedy.

Old-school showmanship.

A completely bonkers music video.

And David Lee Roth acting like he’d somehow escaped from both Las Vegas and MTV simultaneously.

It shouldn’t have worked.

Which is precisely why it worked beautifully.

The song captured everything fascinating about Roth.

He wasn’t simply trying to be the coolest bloke in rock.

He wanted to be Dean Martin, Bugs Bunny, Jim Dandy, Muhammad Ali and the frontman of the biggest rock band in town — preferably all before lunchtime.

😂💎🔥

And somehow…

He nearly managed it.

🎤💎 DIAMOND DAVE WAS NEVER JUST A SINGER

It’s easy to focus on the jokes.

The screams.

The splits.

The karate kicks.

The costumes.

The interviews where answering a simple question could somehow become a twelve-minute philosophical adventure involving mountain climbing, women and something that happened in Pasadena in 1978.

But underneath all that madness was one of rock’s great entertainers.

David Lee Roth understood something incredibly important:

Rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be FUN.

His solo catalogue might never have achieved the cultural enormity of classic Van Halen, but those early records remain stuffed with incredible musicianship and larger-than-life personality.

And that first proper solo band?

Come on, mun.

David Lee Roth.

Steve Vai.

Billy Sheehan.

Gregg Bissonette.

That’s not a backing band.

That’s somebody entering a cheat code.

🎸🔥🥁

Eat ’Em and Smile in particular remains an absolute monster — flashy, technical, ridiculous and completely unapologetic.

Exactly like the bloke standing at the microphone.

🤘 WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE?

Now comes the dangerous bit.

Because ranking David Lee Roth songs is approximately as sensible as telling Diamond Dave to wear a plain black T-shirt.

So let’s hear it.

What’s the greatest David Lee Roth solo song ever?

Are you Team Yankee Rose?

Does Just Like Paradise take the crown?

Or are you joining us at the bar for Just a Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody?

Chuck your rankings into the comments and prepare to defend them like you’re guarding the last pint at a festival.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
