Welcome to the maddest ride in Britpop history, butt! This is the definitive timeline of Oasis – from their scrappy Mancunian beginnings to global domination, legendary gigs, infamous bust-ups, and that eternal question: Will the Gallaghers ever reunite? This is the long-form, pint-in-hand, sing-it-back saga of rock ‘n’ roll’s loudest family feud.
🎉 1991–1993: BIRTH OF A BRITPOP BEHEMOTH
🌆 The Manchester Backdrop
The early ’90s were buzzing in Manchester. The Stone Roses had swaggered in, Happy Mondays were grooving on ecstasy and ego, and Britpop was just a twinkle in the nation’s pint glass. Among all this noise, a little band named The Rain (later to become Oasis) was knocking about with dreams bigger than Liam’s ego.
🧱 From The Rain to Oasis
The band – Liam Gallagher, Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs, Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan, and Tony McCarroll – were making a racket. Then big brother Noel Gallagher returned from a stint as a roadie with Inspiral Carpets. He saw something in Liam’s sneer and swagger and offered them a deal: he’d join, if he could write all the songs and lead the band. Spoiler: they said yes. And with that, Oasis was born.
🚪 King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut – Destiny Calls
On May 31, 1993, Oasis famously bluffed their way onto the bill at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow. Alan McGee from Creation Records was in the crowd. He saw them. He signed them. Rock history changed forever.
“That was the gig. That was the moment. We were nobodies, and we left with a record deal.” – Noel Gallagher
🚀 1994–1996: WORLD DOMINATION AND KNEBWORTH CARNAGE
💿 ‘Definitely Maybe’ (1994): Pure Confidence on Wax
Oasis dropped their debut in August 1994. It was fast, loud, arrogant, and utterly irresistible. “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”, “Live Forever”, “Supersonic” – the album was a sledgehammer to the face of grunge. It became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history.
🌟 Britpop Wars: Blur vs Oasis
By 1995, Oasis and Blur were going head-to-head on the charts and in the tabloids. The Battle of Britpop climaxed in August ‘95 when both bands released singles the same week. Blur’s “Country House” beat Oasis’ “Roll With It”, but Oasis laughed last with Morning Glory outselling anything Blur would ever drop.
💽 ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’ (1995)
This wasn’t just an album – it was the defining sound of the ’90s. It gave us:
- “Wonderwall” (overplayed but still belted out in every pub karaoke)
- “Don’t Look Back in Anger” (still makes grown men cry)
- “Champagne Supernova” (long, lush, and Liam at his drawling best)
Over 22 million copies sold worldwide. The UK fell in love. America took notice. The Gallaghers were everywhere.
🏟️ The Gigs That Made Legends
- Glastonbury 1994 & 1995 – they owned the Pyramid Stage. Not bad for a bunch of lads from Burnage.
- Maine Road (1996) – playing in Manchester’s football Mecca. Proper spiritual moment.
- Loch Lomond (Aug 1996) – 80,000 fans losing their minds.
- Knebworth (Aug 10–11, 1996) – 250,000 fans, two nights, helicopters, lasers, and absolute scenes. 2.5 million people applied for tickets. That’s one in 20 Brits.
“If you weren’t at Knebworth, were you even alive in ‘96?” – Everyone with a parka
🧨 The Feuding Begins
Despite the success, the cracks were showing. Missed soundchecks. Scraps over setlists. The infamous MTV Unplugged (Liam pulled out last-minute, heckled from the balcony, pint in hand). Noel said, “He’s my brother, but he’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
❄️ 1997–1999: BE HERE NOW… AND BURNOUT
💿 Be Here Now (1997): Coke and Chords
The most hyped album of the decade landed in a storm of ego and snow (literally – the band were doing mountains of cocaine).
- Long songs. Even longer intros.
- “D’You Know What I Mean?”, “Stand By Me”, “All Around the World” – overblown brilliance or bloated mess?
Initially a smash, but time hasn’t been kind to it. Still, the tour was colossal.
🥊 Personal Drama Goes Public
- Liam publicly questions the paternity of Noel’s daughter. Classy.
- Punch-ups in studios. Noel leaves the tour. Comes back. Leaves again.
- Tabloids feast. Fans wonder how long they’ve got left.
“We went from working class heroes to Spinal Tap on speed.” – Noel
🎤 Key Gigs:
- G-MEX 1997 – a messy masterpiece. Loud. Leery. Legendary.
- Barrowlands 1998 – one of the last great sweaty, intimate Oasis shows.
🧯 2000–2004: LINE-UP CHANGES & FAMILIAR CHAOS
🚪 New Members Join
Bonehead and Guigsy left in ‘99. Enter Gem Archer and Andy Bell. Alan White still on drums. A new era dawned… kind of.
💿 Albums:
- Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000) – more psychedelic, less punchy.
- Heathen Chemistry (2002) – raw, rowdy, and a return to form.
🔥 More Fights, Naturally
- Munich bar brawl (2002): Liam loses teeth.
- Liam gets arrested in Germany. Noel threatens to walk (again).
- Gigs pulled. Fans tamping.
“Every band argues. We just do it louder and with more broken furniture.” – Liam
🎶 Standout Tracks:
- “The Hindu Times”
- “Stop Crying Your Heart Out”
- “Little By Little”
- “Songbird” (Liam’s first proper tune, and it’s lush!)
🔥 2005–2008: DON’T BELIEVE THE TRUTH – BELIEVE THE COMEBACK
💿 Albums:
- Don’t Believe the Truth (2005) – hailed as their best since Morning Glory
- Dig Out Your Soul (2008) – darker, heavier, full of swagger
🏟️ Monster Gigs:
- Manchester City Stadiums (2005) – back on home turf.
- Wembley (2008) – roaring crowds, tighter band.
- V Festival (2005 & 2008) – they still knew how to command a field.
The press cooled on them. The fans didn’t. Oasis were still massive.
💥 Noel & Liam: The War Continues
Every interview. Every studio session. Still barbs. Still brothers. Somehow, it worked.
“He’s the best frontman in the world – when he shows up.” – Noel
🚨 2009: THE END (AGAIN)
🧃 Fruit Platters & Fists
Rock en Seine Festival, Paris – August 2009.
Liam throws a plum. Noel smashes a guitar. One more argument turns final.
Noel: “I simply could not go on working with Liam another day.”
And that was that. Oasis was over. No farewell tour. Just fury and silence.
“It’s over. Oasis is no more.” – Official band statement
Fans wept. The tabloids feasted. The Britpop era was declared officially dead.
🐦 2010–2020: AFTERSHOCKS & SOLO FIGHTS
🎸 Beady Eye vs High Flying Birds
- Liam forms Beady Eye (with Gem and Andy).
- Noel forms High Flying Birds. Wins critical acclaim.
Beady Eye struggled. Noel soared. Liam still sold out venues but the magic had shifted.
💻 Twitter Becomes WW3
- Liam: “Potato.”
- Noel: “Fork. Soup.”
- Fans stuck in the middle with memes.
Glastonbury rumours swirled every year. No reunion. Just insults and solo albums.
🔮 2021–NOW: WILL THEY / WON’T THEY?
🎤 Liam’s Still Loud
- Solo albums: As You Were, Why Me? Why Not.
- Played Knebworth solo in 2022 – and smashed it.
🎸 Noel’s Still Crafting
- High Flying Birds releasing grown-up rock.
- Tour dates everywhere but still no Oasis nod.
🗣️ Reunite or Not?
- Noel: “Never say never… but probably never.”
- Liam: “It’s happening. He just doesn’t know it yet.”
“If the Stone Roses can do it, so can we. Unless Noel grows a proper fringe first.” – Liam (probably)
🧱 LEGACY: OASIS FOREVER
- 8 studio albums
- Over 70 million records sold
- 1,000 brotherly brawls (estimated)
- A million dreams for a reunion
Oasis weren’t just a band. They were a movement. A madness. A moment.
And whether or not they reunite, their songs are still shouted in football stadiums, pubs, and festival fields across the world.
Don’t Look Back In Anger?
C’mon butt… we always will. 🤘🍻
