13 July 1985: When Rock Music Took on the World

Some concerts are legendary.

Some performances become part of music history.

Then there’s Live Aid – the day when the biggest names in rock and pop united across two continents to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia, creating one of the most iconic events the world has ever seen.

With shows taking place simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Live Aid wasn’t just another festival. It was a global event watched by an estimated 1.9 billion people across more than 150 countries, making it one of the largest television broadcasts in history.

✈️ Two Continents. One Incredible Day.

One of the most remarkable moments behind the scenes wasn’t even on stage.

After opening the London show with an unforgettable set, Phil Collins jumped aboard the Concorde, crossed the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound, and performed again in Philadelphia just hours later.

It’s still one of the most incredible logistical feats in live music history.

How many artists can honestly say they played two of the biggest concerts ever held… on two different continents… on the same day?

Very few.

🎸 A Line-Up That Reads Like Rock Royalty

Live Aid brought together an almost unbelievable collection of artists, including:

  • 🎤 Queen
  • ⚡ U2
  • 🤘 Black Sabbath
  • 🎸 Led Zeppelin
  • 🎹 Elton John
  • 🎵 David Bowie
  • 🥁 The Who
  • 🎤 Paul McCartney
  • 🎸 Dire Straits
  • 🎙️ Phil Collins
  • 🤟 Judas Priest
  • 🎸 Santana
  • 🎤 Madonna
  • 🎵 Mick Jagger & Tina Turner
  • 🦅 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

…and many, many more.

Looking back today, it’s hard to imagine another single event assembling so many legendary performers in one place.

👑 Queen’s 21 Minutes of Perfection

Ask almost any rock fan what they remember from Live Aid and one answer comes up again and again…

Queen.

Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon delivered a breathtaking 21-minute performance that many still consider the greatest live set ever played.

From Bohemian Rhapsody and Radio Ga Ga to Hammer to Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and We Are The Champions, Wembley Stadium became one giant choir.

Even today, clips from that performance still give music fans goosebumps.

❤️ Music Making a Difference

Live Aid wasn’t simply about incredible performances.

It raised tens of millions of pounds for famine relief and inspired governments, charities and millions of people to donate.

It proved that music could unite people across borders, languages and cultures for a common cause.

The event changed how charity concerts were viewed and paved the way for countless benefit shows in the decades that followed.

🤘 The Riff Report Verdict

There have been bigger festivals.

There have been louder stages.

There have been more elaborate productions.

But there has never been another day quite like Live Aid.

A day where music stopped being just entertainment and became a global force for good.

From Phil Collins racing across the Atlantic aboard Concorde to Freddie Mercury commanding Wembley like no one before or since, Live Aid remains one of rock’s greatest achievements.

Some gigs entertain.

Some gigs make history.

Live Aid did both.

🎸 What are your favourite Live Aid memories?

Was it Queen stealing the show? Phil Collins pulling off the impossible? Black Sabbath reuniting? U2’s emotional performance? Or another unforgettable moment?

Let us know in the comments, butt! 🤘🔥

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
