For millions of listeners, Jack Johnson is the laid-back king of acoustic sunshine โ the man responsible for Better Together, Banana Pancakes, Sitting, Waiting, Wishing and enough chilled-out tunes to soundtrack every barbecue since 2001.
But before the Hawaiian singer-songwriter picked up the acoustic guitar and became a global star, he was chasing a very different dream.
And it nearly cost him his life.

The Pipeline accident that changed everything
Long before the record deals and enormous festival crowds, Johnson was one of Hawaiiโs most exciting young surfers.
Raised on the North Shore of Oahu, he began surfing when he was just five years old. By the age of 17, he was competing at Pipeline, one of the most famous โ and dangerous โ surf breaks on the planet.
Pipeline may look magnificent from the beach, but underneath those thundering waves sits a shallow and unforgiving reef. Get it wrong, and things can turn nasty in seconds.
Thatโs exactly what happened to Johnson.
During a session in 1992, he was thrown from his board and slammed violently into the reef. The impact left him requiring more than 100 stitches, while several of his teeth were also knocked out or badly damaged.
It was a horrific accident that brought his ambitions of becoming a professional surfer to an abrupt halt.
One moment he was charging through some of the worldโs most powerful waves. The next, he was facing a long recovery and wondering what direction his life would take.
From hospital bed to guitar strings
Music had already been part of Johnsonโs life. He had played guitar from an early age and regularly swapped songs with friends after days spent surfing.
However, being forced out of the water gave him more time to focus on other creative outlets.
He began concentrating on filmmaking, eventually helping to create acclaimed surf documentaries including Thicker Than Water and The September Sessions. His songs initially appeared alongside the footage, slowly introducing that unmistakably warm, relaxed voice to a much wider audience.
The accident would also inspire the song Drink the Water, featured on his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales.
Released in 2001, that album transformed Johnson from a respected figure within surfing circles into a proper musical phenomenon. Albums including On and On, In Between Dreams and Sleep Through the Static followed, selling millions of copies around the world.
Not bad for someone whose original career plan involved a surfboard rather than a microphone, eh?
Did Jack Johnson disappear?
Johnsonโs public profile may have become quieter at times, but he never truly disappeared.
Unlike musicians who spend every waking minute chasing headlines, Jack has always maintained a relatively private life in Hawaii. He has continued releasing records, touring selectively and supporting environmental and community projects through organisations including the Kลkua Hawaiสปi Foundation and the Johnson สปOhana Foundation.
His 2022 album, Meet the Moonlight, showed that the mellow magic remained firmly intact. In 2026, he returned with one of the most personal projects of his career: SURFILMUSIC.
The documentary uses archive footage, family photographs, old recordings and interviews to tell the story of Johnsonโs life across surfing, cinema and music. A companion double release, SURFILMUSIC Soundtrack and 4-Tracks, also includes restored recordings and previously unreleased material from his earliest songwriting days.

The tragic death that caused confusion
Some recent confusion may have been caused by reports involving Johnsonโs lifelong friend, Tamayo Perry.
Perry was a hugely respected Hawaiian surfer, professional lifeguard and occasional actor who appeared in productions including Blue Crush and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. He was killed during a shark attack near Goat Island in June 2024.
Johnson and Perry had grown up together on Oahuโs North Shore, and Perry appeared in Johnsonโs surf documentary Thicker Than Water.
The loss hit Jack and the wider Hawaiian surfing community incredibly hard. Johnsonโs SURFILMUSIC documentary is dedicated to his friendโs memory.
