MORTAL SIN vocalist Mat Maurer has given fans another reason to get excited about the Australian thrash veterans’ reunion, revealing that he is “95 percent” certain the band will eventually produce new music.

Now that’s the sort of percentage we can work with.

MORTAL SIN are back in action, and while reunions often begin with the old classics, festival appearances and a healthy amount of nostalgia, it sounds increasingly likely that this one won’t simply remain a celebration of the past.

According to Mat Maurer, the prospect of fresh material is looking extremely promising.

His confidence level?

“95 percent.”

We’ll take those odds.

⚡ MORTAL SIN May Not Be Content Simply Playing The Old Songs

When veteran bands reunite, there are usually two possible directions.

Option one:

Rehearse the classics.

Play some shows.

Enjoy being together again.

Collect a few overdue cheers.

Go home happy.

Option two:

Somebody brings a riff into rehearsal.

Someone else says:

“Hang on… that’s actually pretty good.”

And suddenly everyone is discussing studio time.

From Maurer’s comments, MORTAL SIN appear to be edging much closer towards option two.

Nothing appears completely locked in yet, but 95 percent sure is considerably more encouraging than the usual:

“We’ll see what happens.”

🤘 Australia’s Thrash Scene Has Always Had Its Own Identity

When people talk about classic thrash metal, attention naturally turns towards the United States and Germany.

Metallica.

Slayer.

Megadeth.

Anthrax.

Kreator.

Sodom.

Destruction.

But thrash was never restricted to those scenes.

Australia developed its own underground, and MORTAL SIN became one of its defining names.

Formed in Sydney during the mid-1980s, the band emerged at a time when thrash was evolving rapidly from the raw energy of heavy metal, punk and hardcore.

MORTAL SIN took those ingredients and added an unmistakably Australian roughness.

No polish required.

💀 Mayhemic Destruction Became A Cult Thrash Classic

The band’s debut album, Mayhemic Destruction, remains the record most immediately associated with MORTAL SIN.

Released during thrash metal’s explosive 1980s growth, it introduced a band capable of standing alongside considerably better-known international acts.

Raw guitars.

Fast rhythms.

Aggression.

Huge gang-vocal energy.

And songs built for sweaty clubs rather than polite listening environments.

For underground thrash fans, the album became essential.

It also demonstrated that Australia had plenty to contribute to the rapidly expanding global metal scene.

🎸 Face Of Despair Pushed Them Further

MORTAL SIN followed with Face Of Despair, another record that strengthened their reputation outside Australia.

By then, the band had developed beyond simply sounding like enthusiastic young thrashers.

The songwriting became sharper.

The musicianship developed.

The band sounded increasingly confident.

For many fans, those first two albums represent MORTAL SIN at their classic peak.

But the story didn’t stop there.

🔥 MORTAL SIN’s History Has Never Been Particularly Straightforward

Like plenty of thrash bands that emerged during the 1980s, MORTAL SIN’s journey involved lineup changes, periods of inactivity and eventual returns.

That sort of history can make reunions complicated.

Different eras produce different musicians.

Different musicians produce different chemistry.

And suddenly simply getting everyone into one rehearsal room becomes more difficult than writing the actual songs.

Yet the band continued returning to heavy music.

Later albums including An Absence Of Faith and Psychology Of Death proved MORTAL SIN still had something to say long after the original thrash boom had ended.

🎤 Mat Maurer Has Remained Central To The MORTAL SIN Identity

Maurer’s vocals have always been a major part of the band’s personality.

Thrash singers rarely need to sound traditionally beautiful.

They need character.

Something recognisable.

Something capable of cutting through violent guitars and drums without disappearing into the mix.

Maurer has always delivered that kind of presence.

Hearing him discussing new music naturally raises the biggest question:

What would MORTAL SIN sound like now?

🤔 Would New MORTAL SIN Sound Old-School Or Modern?

That will be fascinating.

Do they lean fully into the sound of Mayhemic Destruction?

Keep everything raw?

Fast riffs?

Old-school production?

Or does a modern MORTAL SIN record reflect everything the musicians have heard and experienced since those early albums?

There’s no wrong answer.

Veteran thrash bands have approached this problem in very different ways.

Some deliberately recreate their early sound.

Others keep the classic foundations while taking advantage of modern production and decades of improved musicianship.

The best comeback records usually find somewhere between the two.

Recognisable enough to feel authentic.

Fresh enough to justify existing.

⚔️ Thrash Metal Has Been Enjoying An Incredible Long Life

Another reason new MORTAL SIN material makes sense is that thrash metal simply refuses to disappear.

The genre has survived:

Hair metal.

Grunge.

Nu metal.

Metalcore.

Streaming.

TikTok.

And approximately seven million articles announcing the death of guitar music.

Still here.

Still fast.

Still angry.

Still filled with people in denim jackets arguing about guitar tones from 1987.

Beautiful.

Veteran bands continue making strong records, while younger acts have embraced the genre without treating it like a museum piece.

There is absolutely room for another MORTAL SIN album.

🇦🇺 Australian Metal Has Become A Global Force

The wider Australian heavy-music scene has also grown enormously since MORTAL SIN first emerged.

Today, Australian metal and alternative music regularly produces internationally successful acts across metalcore, progressive metal, extreme metal and hard rock.

That makes MORTAL SIN’s return particularly interesting.

They represent an earlier chapter.

A time when Australian bands attempting to break internationally faced considerably larger geographical and logistical barriers.

They were helping establish the pathway before the modern Australian heavy scene became the global force it is today.

💿 New Music Would Give The Reunion A Different Meaning

There’s an enormous difference between:

“MORTAL SIN are playing again.”

and:

“MORTAL SIN are making another record.”

The first celebrates history.

The second creates another chapter.

That’s why Maurer’s 95-percent comment matters.

New music immediately makes the reunion feel less like nostalgia and more like an active band rediscovering what it can become.

The classics will always matter.

But nobody wants to spend forever looking backwards.

🔊 The First New Riff Will Tell Us Everything

Whenever veteran bands announce they’re working on fresh material, fans naturally become detectives.

Will it be fast?

Will it sound like the old stuff?

Will the production be too clean?

Are there blastbeats?

Why is that snare tone different?

Thrash fans can analyse twelve seconds of rehearsal footage like forensic scientists.

But ultimately the first proper song will answer everything.

If that first riff comes flying out of the speakers and immediately sounds like MORTAL SIN?

Job done.

🧨 Don’t Expect Them To Rush It

There’s also no reason to hurry.

MORTAL SIN already have a legacy.

They don’t need to release something simply because a reunion created a convenient marketing opportunity.

Better to wait until the band genuinely has material worth putting its name on.

If the musicians are enjoying playing together again and the songs begin appearing naturally, then let the process take whatever time it needs.

Thrash records don’t come with expiry dates.

Apparently neither do thrash bands.

🖤 Reunions Work Best When The Band Actually Wants To Be There

You can normally tell when a reunion exists solely because somebody saw a spreadsheet.

The performances feel cautious.

Everybody looks slightly bored.

And the backstage atmosphere presumably involves separate rooms and contractual eye-contact limits.

The encouraging thing about talk of new MORTAL SIN music is what it suggests about the band’s current creative chemistry.

Musicians don’t usually start seriously considering new songs unless being together feels worthwhile.

If the reunion has generated enough energy to inspire fresh material, that’s a very good sign.

🎶 A New Album Could Introduce MORTAL SIN To Another Generation

There’s another advantage.

Thousands of younger metal fans weren’t around during MORTAL SIN’s original era.

Some may know the name.

Some may own Mayhemic Destruction.

Others may discover the band entirely through this reunion.

Fresh material provides a gateway.

Hear the new single.

Dig backwards.

Find the early records.

Suddenly an album recorded decades ago has another listener.

That’s how heavy music survives.

One generation passes the riffs to the next.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Ninety-five percent.

We’ll happily take that.

MORTAL SIN’s reunion already gives Australian thrash fans plenty to celebrate, but Mat Maurer’s confidence that new material will emerge makes the whole thing considerably more exciting.

The band could easily live on its legacy.

Mayhemic Destruction alone guarantees them a permanent place in Australian metal history.

But writing something new would demonstrate that MORTAL SIN aren’t merely reopening an old chapter.

They’re potentially writing another one.

Whether that means a single, an EP or eventually a full album remains to be seen.

For now, nothing should be treated as completely confirmed.

There is still that troublesome remaining five percent.

But if somebody already has a riff sitting around?

We suspect that percentage is about to disappear very quickly.

MORTAL SIN are back — and the next Australian thrash attack might contain songs we haven’t heard before. 🇦🇺⚡🤘

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
