A fret-melting tribute from The Riff Report Blog
“I don’t feel like a rock star. I feel like a guitar builder with a passion.” – Eddie Van Halen
🕯️ OCTOBER 6, 2020 – WHEN THE RIFF MACHINE WENT SILENT
On October 6, 2020, the strings of rock ‘n’ roll snapped in unison.
Eddie Van Halen, the wizard of the whammy bar, the mad scientist of shred, the guitarist who rewrote every rule in the book — passed away after a long battle with throat cancer. He was 65.
The man who made guitars smoke, squeal, scream, and sing was gone.
And rock? It still hasn’t recovered.
🎸 WHO WAS EDDIE VAN HALEN?
- Born January 26, 1955, in Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Moved to Pasadena, California, where he and his brother Alex Van Halen formed Van Halen
- Self-taught, innovative, and absolutely mental on the fretboard
- Invented techniques that shook the foundations of guitar playing (we’re lookin’ at you, tapping)
- Built his own guitars — including the Frankenstrat, one of rock’s most iconic axes
He didn’t just play.
He reprogrammed the damn instrument.
“Without Eddie, 80% of modern guitar playing wouldn’t exist.” – Steve Vai
🔥 VAN HALEN: RIFFS, WAILS, AND WILDNESS
Van Halen’s debut dropped in 1978, and it was like someone poured nitro into the speakers.
Eddie’s “Eruption” solo on track two? Game. Over.
💿 Albums That Changed the Game:
- Van Halen (1978) – Runnin’ with the Devil, Eruption, Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love
- Van Halen II (1979) – Dance the Night Away
- 1984 (yup, that’s the title) – Jump, Panama, Hot for Teacher – arena rock perfection
- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991) – heavier, riffier, and still brilliant
With David Lee Roth: flamboyant, glitzy rock anthems.
With Sammy Hagar: more mature, more melodic, still kicked ass.
🧪 THE INNOVATOR: WHY EDDIE WAS FROM ANOTHER PLANET
- Two-handed tapping – He didn’t invent it, but he made it iconic
- Whammy bar insanity – Dive bombs, harmonic screams, and guitar talking back
- Frankenstrat – Built from spare parts, it became a rock relic
- Volume knob swells, finger slides, pick harmonics, string skipping – You name it, he twisted it
- “Eruption” – Two minutes of guitar wizardry that still leaves jaws on the floor
“Eddie played like he was laughing through the strings.” – Tom Morello
💔 OCTOBER 6, 2020 – THE WORLD LOSES ITS GUITAR HERO
Eddie had battled cancer for years, keeping it mostly quiet.
On October 6, his son Wolfgang Van Halen announced to the world:
“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I shared with him on and off stage was a gift.”
Tributes rolled in from every corner of music:
- Brian May: “One of the sweetest souls, and greatest musicians”
- Slash: “A true pioneer”
- Gene Simmons: “There’s no replacing him”
- Tom Morello: “Eddie Van Halen was the Mozart of our generation”
🎧 EDDIE’S ESSENTIAL RIFFS AND RIOTS
- Eruption – The solo that broke a million minds
- Panama – Filthy. Groovy. Riffs for days.
- Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love – Punkish, dirty, perfect
- Jump – Synth AND guitar? He made it work
- Hot for Teacher – That intro should be illegal
- Unchained – Down-tuned riffing before it was cool
- Mean Street – Intro taps that still haunt
- Cathedral – Church organ? Nah, just Eddie
- Little Guitars – Acoustic magic
- Right Now – Emotional depth and signature tone
🎸 GUITAR HERO FOREVER
Eddie’s influence? EVERYWHERE.
- Every shredder from Zakk Wylde to Nuno Bettencourt cites him
- Guitar builders still study Frankenstrat like scripture
- His tone — often imitated, never duplicated
- EVH gear – still among the most sought-after amps and pedals
- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (2007)
💬 THE WISDOM OF EVH
“If you put in the hours, you’ll get there. If you love it, it’s not work.”
“I’m always chasing tone. That’s the fun of it.”
“Music is a safe kind of high.”
“I never learned to read music. I play from the heart.”
🪦 FINAL SOLO
He was the engine of Van Halen.
The madman with a smile wider than his guitar neck.
He didn’t want to be a god — he just loved to play.
Now, somewhere up there, he’s tapping solos on a cloud, showing angels how to squeal in E♭.
