โNOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT USโ
Alright, you beautiful bunch of riff-lovinโ legends โ Julyโs not just for sunburn, warm cider and festival chaos. Itโs also Disability Pride Month, and here at The Riff Report, weโre cranking up the volume on inclusion, pride, and a community thatโs been kicking ass and smashing barriers for decades. ๐ช๐ธ
This ainโt about pity, sympathy, or the usual token nod. This is PRIDE โ with a capital โGET OUTTA OUR WAYโ. Disabled folks have been front and centre in shaping the world of music, activism, art, gaming, comedy, and chaos, and itโs high time we celebrated that the same way we celebrate a new Iron Maiden tour โ LOUDLY, OBSESSIVELY, and WITH FIRE. ๐ฅโฟ๐ค
๐๏ธ Soโฆ What Is Disability Pride Month Anyway?
Every July, Disability Pride Month rolls in like a monster riff and says: โWeโre here, weโre proud, and weโve got stories to tell.โ ๐ค
It started in the US back in 1990, marking the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) โ a law that finally said, โOi, maybe disabled people should have rights too, you muppets.โ Over the years, itโs grown into a worldwide celebration of disabled identity, resilience, visibility, and joy.
This isnโt some corporate awareness campaign shoved in between ad breaks. Itโs a grassroots, full-throttle, community-led celebration that says:
๐งก Weโre not broken.
๐งก Weโre not tragic.
๐งก Weโre bloody brilliant โ just the way we are.
๐จ The Disability Pride Flag โ Colours That ROAR
Forget muted tones and sad violins โ the Disability Pride Flag is as bold as a Slayer setlist. โก
Originally created by disabled artist Ann Magill, the redesigned 2021 version is bursting with meaning:
- ๐ค Black background โ Honouring lives lost to ableism, neglect, abuse, and lack of access to care.
- โค๏ธ Red stripe โ Physical disabilities
- ๐ Gold stripe โ Neurodivergence (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.)
- ๐ค White stripe โ Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
- ๐ Blue stripe โ Psychiatric disabilities and mental illness
- ๐ Green stripe โ Sensory disabilities (like blindness, deafness, etc.)
It zigzags across the flag because disability isnโt linear โ itโs chaotic, messy, powerful, and beautifully unique. ๐
๐ค Disability and Rock โnโ Roll โ More Connected Than You Think
Letโs get one thing straight: disabled people have always been part of rock and metal โ whether you knew it or not. From stage-diving wheelchair warriors to artists who battle chronic pain and neurodivergence, the rock scene is bursting with untold stories.
๐ค Rick Allen of Def Leppard lost his arm in a car accident and came back harder, faster, louder. The man literally re-learned how to drum with one arm. ICON.
๐ธ Ian Dury had polio as a child, walked with a limp, and gave us anthems like Spasticus Autisticus โ a defiant, snarling middle finger to ableist norms.
๐ฅ Many neurodivergent musicians (from Billie Eilish to Thom Yorke) have channelled their unique brains into music thatโs raw, emotional, and unforgettable.
๐ฆผ Meanwhile, every festival pit youโve seen has probably had a crowd-surfer in a wheelchair bringing the energy harder than half the band. Legends. Tidy.
๐ฌ This Monthโs Themes? Representation, Accessibility, and Attitude
While there’s no official theme for 2025, the disability communityโs been shouting loud and clear about a few key riffs:
๐ Representation
Disabled people arenโt just โinspiration stories.โ Theyโre actors, artists, athletes, and anarchists. They deserve screen time, stage time, and headline slots โ not just token mentions.
๐ Accessibility
If your venue has 20 flights of stairs, zero ramps, and toilets that look like a broom cupboard, sort it out mun. Access isnโt a luxury โ itโs a right.
๐ง Mental Health Matters
Disability Pride includes psychiatric and mental health disabilities โ and itโs about time we stopped pretending otherwise. Depression? Anxiety? PTSD? You belong here too.
๐ Intersectionality
Being disabled intersects with race, gender, class, sexuality, and culture. We need to amplify those stories too โ especially those whoโve been silenced far too long.
๐ How to Celebrate Disability Pride Month (And Not Be a Nobhead About It)
Wanna be an ally this July? Hereโs how to not be a bellend and actually help:
๐งก Support Disabled Creators
Buy from disabled artists. Stream disabled musicians. Read books by disabled writers. Share their links, boost their voices, and donโt just lurk โ engage.
๐ง Educate Yourself
Google is free, butt. Learn about ableism. Watch documentaries like Crip Camp. Follow activists like Hannah Gadsby, Alice Wong, or Imani Barbarin.
โฟ Check Your Own Spaces
If you run a venue, a blog, a shop, or a Discord server โ ask: Is this actually accessible? Can someone with mobility, sensory or mental health needs use it with ease?
๐งโโ๏ธ Learn Something New
Try learning a bit of British Sign Language. Add alt-text to your images. Use subtitles. Make the internet a more inclusive place, one TikTok at a time.
๐ถ Shout Loud, Not Over
Lift disabled voices without speaking over them. Use your platform to amplify, not hijack. If youโre a festival organiser, hire disabled performers, provide access viewing platforms, and donโt forget the bloody ramps.
โ Famous Quotes That Slap Harder Than a Drum Solo
โDisability is not a brave struggle or โcourage in the face of adversityโ… disability is an art. Itโs an ingenious way to live.โ
โ Neil Marcus
โWeโre not here to inspire you. Weโre here to live our lives โ just like you.โ
โ Stella Young
โIf I can survive cancer, drum with one arm, and tour the world, you can build a f***ing ramp.โ
โ Probably Rick Allen, in spirit at least ๐ธ๐ฅ
๐๏ธ Coming Soon to The Riff Report:
๐ “Ramp It Up” Tees
๐ธ “Disabled And Dangerous” guitar picks
๐ง โAccess All Areasโ playlist curated by disabled artists
๐ฅ Watch this space, cโmon butt!
๐ Final Thoughts โ Disabled Pride Is Rock โnโ Roll As Hell
Being disabled means existing in a world that often wasnโt built for you โ and still living, loving, creating, performing, laughing, moshing, and absolutely slaying it anyway.
So this July, donโt just post a flag and call it a day. Celebrate, support, listen, shout, and fight for access. Whether youโre disabled or an ally, this is your cue to make some noise.
Because disabled lives arenโt background noise โ theyโre the main riff, the chorus, and the final encore. ๐ค๐ฅ
