Because Loudness, Leather & Lucifer Apparently Weren’t “Proper Entertainment”
Let’s face it: for decades, the mainstream media treated metal like a noisy cousin they’d rather not talk about at family dinners. If you screamed too loud, wore too much black, or sang about Satan, the tabloids, TV execs, and pearl-clutching politicians came for your neck faster than a Slayer riff.
So here’s a loud, proud shout-out to 10 metal artists the media absolutely loathed — and who used that hatred as jet fuel. C’mon butt, let’s get controversial…
1. ⚡ Motörhead – Too Loud For Everyone
Lemmy and the lads were everything the media hated: noisy, scruffy, whisky-gargling maniacs who didn’t give a toss about polish or pop charts.
While the press clung to punk and glam, Motörhead tore through like a biker gang on speed (literally). Top of the Pops wouldn’t touch ’em – and that’s exactly why we love ’em.
🗞️ “They look like Hell’s Angels and sound like a car crash.” – some old fart in a suit, probably.
2. ⛓️ Black Sabbath – Blamed For All Society’s Ills
The media invented the Satanic Panic thanks to Sabbath. Ozzy bit one bat and boom – they were the Antichrist’s house band.
No matter that they sang about war, poverty, and social collapse – if it had doom riffs and pentagrams, the press lost their minds.
🧙♂️ “They’re not musicians, they’re black magic merchants!” cried tabloids.
🏴 Only in Wales, mun…
3. 🩸 W.A.S.P. – The PMRC’s Worst Nightmare
Remember the song “Animal (F*** Like a Beast)”? Yeah, so did every outraged senator’s wife in America.
W.A.S.P. made headlines for stage blood, raw meat, and chainsaws – not exactly BBC Radio 2 friendly. Dee Snider defending the band in Congress was peak “media vs metal” madness.
📺 “A threat to the youth!” – said the news.
🎸 The youth, meanwhile: “YESS MUN!”
4. 🦇 King Diamond / Mercyful Fate – Satan Says Hello
With corpse paint, upside-down crosses, and falsetto vocals that could scare your nan, King Diamond was tailor-made for tabloid panic.
The Danish devil’s lyrics about rituals and resurrection had evangelists and talk shows foaming at the mouth.
🧛♂️ “We don’t worship Satan… but we do think he makes a great topic.” – King (cheeky as ever).
5. 👊 Twisted Sister – Crossdressers with a Cause
The media hated that Twisted Sister dared to challenge gender norms and authority, all while looking like drag queens who bench-pressed trucks.
When Dee Snider appeared in Congress wearing a sleeveless tee and out-argued lawmakers, the media couldn’t handle it.
📰 “We’re Not Gonna Take It” became a protest anthem despite the media calling them freaks.
6. 🛡️ Iron Maiden – Eddie Offends Everyone
Iron Maiden’s crime? Creating Eddie, a zombie mascot who appeared on album covers beheading politicians, crucified, or wielding axes.
Add in lyrics about war, death, and ancient prophecies, and you had Daily Mail panic material for years.
⚰️ Their Egypt-themed tour? Accused of blasphemy.
🧻 Their “Number of the Beast” era? Christians burning albums.
Maiden: “Cheers for the free promo.”
7. ✝️ Stryper – Too Christian For Metal, Too Metal For Christians
Christian metal band Stryper caught it from both sides.
Mainstream media saw them as a gimmick, while Christian outlets accused them of looking too devilish to spread the word of God.
It was a no-win PR war – unless you were a kid who wanted riffs and redemption.
🎤 Yellow and black never looked so controversial.
8. 💀 Cannibal Corpse – Banned On Sight
Forget subtlety – Cannibal Corpse were straight-up horror.
Album covers featured zombies devouring intestines, lyrics described mutilation in gruesome detail, and the media? Oh, they were tamping.
📺 MTV banned their videos.
🎬 Even Germany banned their albums outright.
🤘 Result? More album sales and a permanent spot on every metalhead’s wishlist.
9. 🔥 Slayer – The Soundtrack to Hell (Apparently)
Slayer didn’t care what the media thought – they leaned into the chaos.
Songs like “Angel of Death” and “Dead Skin Mask” had newspapers crying foul, and the band’s use of Nazi imagery (used to condemn, not glorify) only added fuel to the fire.
Slayer weren’t trying to be liked – they were here to thrash and terrify.
💬 “They promote violence!”
👹 Nah, they promote face-melting riffs.
10. ☠️ Venom – The Blueprint For Controversy
Before black metal was a genre, Venom were already being blamed for everything from Satanism to sacrificing goats (no proof, just panic).
With album titles like “Welcome to Hell”, the UK press painted them as literal devil worshippers.
🎤 “We’re not evil, just British and bored.”
Legendary.
💬 Final Scream
The louder they played, the more the media panicked. But here’s the truth, butt – metal was never made for the mainstream.
It’s loud, it’s weird, it’s rebellious, and it makes suits sweat. And for every TV presenter that tutted, a million fans cranked it up louder.
So next time someone says “the media hated them,” throw the horns up and say: “Proper job.” 🤘🔥
