๐ŸŽธโค๏ธ Worrying news for rock fans around the world, butt! Legendary DEEP PURPLE frontman Ian Gillan has required urgent hospital treatment following a medical emergency in Leipzig, Germany. The 81-year-old vocalist had hoped to continue performing, but doctors have warned of serious risks, forcing the band to postpone their remaining UK and European concerts.

What began as the postponement of two German performances has now developed into a much bigger disruption to DEEP PURPLE’s 2026 SPLAT! World Tour. And while fans are understandably disappointed, there’s one thing that matters far more than another concert: Ian Gillan’s health.

Well, this is news we never enjoy reporting here at The Riff Report.

One of the most recognisable voices in hard rock history has been forced to step away from the stage after experiencing a medical emergency while touring Europe.

And for generations of DEEP PURPLE fans, the announcement has understandably caused concern.

On Saturday 31 October 2026, the legendary British rock band confirmed that frontman Ian Gillan had been hospitalised following an unexpected medical problem in Leipzig, Germany.

The incident forced DEEP PURPLE to postpone their scheduled performance at Leipzig’s QI Arena that evening, along with their concert at Hamburg’s Sporthalle on Sunday 1 November.

Initially, there was hope that the band might be able to resume touring after the weekend.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been possible.

On Monday 2 November 2026, Gillan released a personal statement confirming that his medical team had advised him against continuing.

The result?

The remainder of DEEP PURPLE’s European and UK tour has been postponed until further notice.

Now, we love a good rock gig as much as anybody.

Give us enormous guitar riffs, thunderous drums and thousands of fans singing along to Smoke On The Water, and we’re happier than a Welsh metalhead finding the last cold pint at Steelhouse Festival!

But sometimes, the music has to stop.

And when doctors are warning about serious health risks, the decision becomes considerably more important than the next concert.

Take care of yourself, Ian. The fans aren’t going anywhere. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿšจ What Happened To Ian Gillan In Leipzig?

The situation first became public on Saturday 31 October, when DEEP PURPLE announced that their next two German concerts could not take place.

The band were travelling through Europe as part of their extensive 2026 touring schedule, supporting their latest studio album, SPLAT!

However, while in Leipzig, Gillan experienced a medical problem that required hospital attention.

The original announcement described the situation as a medical emergency and confirmed his hospitalisation.

The band expressed disappointment about the last-minute disruption and acknowledged the inconvenience caused to ticket holders.

They also reassured fans that the affected performances would be rearranged if suitable dates could be found.

At that stage, the postponement concerned just two concerts:

  • Saturday 31 October: QI Arena, Leipzig, Germany.
  • Sunday 1 November: Sporthalle, Hamburg, Germany.

The original statement offered no specific details about the nature of Gillan’s condition.

And understandably, fans began sending messages of support to the singer and his bandmates.

Because while DEEP PURPLE have been entertaining audiences for nearly six decades, the musicians behind those legendary recordings are human beings too.

And sometimes, life has other plans.

โค๏ธ Ian Gillan Releases Emotional Statement To Fans

Following the initial announcement, Gillan personally addressed the situation on Monday 2 November.

The singer thanked fans for their encouragement and explained that he had wanted to complete the band’s remaining European and UK concerts.

However, medical advice made continuing impossible.

Gillan confirmed:

“I had a medical problem whilst in Leipzig which required urgent attention at the hospital.”

He went on to acknowledge the “very serious risks” associated with continuing the tour.

Following discussions with his medical team and management, the decision was made to postpone the remaining European and UK performances.

Gillan apologised for the disruption and thanked fans for their understanding.

He signed the statement simply:

IG

It’s a straightforward message from a musician who has spent much of his adult life on the road.

And there’s something particularly moving about knowing that, even after receiving urgent hospital treatment, Gillan had still hoped to finish the tour.

That dedication speaks volumes about his commitment to the music and his audience.

But there’s a time for determination and a time for listening to the professionals.

And right now, medical advice has to come first.

๐Ÿฅ Has Ian Gillan’s Medical Condition Been Revealed?

No specific diagnosis has been publicly announced.

Gillan has confirmed that he experienced a medical problem requiring urgent treatment, but the exact nature of that problem remains private.

There has also been no confirmed date for his return to live performances.

And that’s where the matter should remain until the singer or his representatives decide to provide more information.

There’s already enough speculation floating around the internet without anybody adding unnecessary rumours about somebody’s health.

The important facts are clear.

Gillan required urgent medical attention.

His doctors advised against continuing the tour.

And DEEP PURPLE have postponed the affected concerts.

Anything beyond that would be speculation.

So let’s leave the medical assessments to the doctors and concentrate on wishing Ian well, butt.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง DEEP PURPLE’s November 2026 UK Tour Has Been Postponed

The most significant development for British fans is the postponement of the band’s entire November UK run.

DEEP PURPLE were scheduled to perform six concerts across five cities.

The tour would have brought the group to Newcastle, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and London.

Unfortunately, every one of those performances is now affected.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Postponed UK Concert Dates

24 November 2026LondonEventim Apollo
25 November 2026LondonRoyal Albert Hall

All six concerts have been postponed, with replacement dates yet to be announced as of 3 November 2026.

That’s disappointing news for everybody who had been counting down the days to seeing one of Britain’s greatest hard rock bands.

And these weren’t just ordinary tour stops.

The London dates included performances at two of the capital’s most recognisable music venues.

The Royal Albert Hall, in particular, has a special place in British music history.

For a band with DEEP PURPLE’s extraordinary legacy, another appearance there would have been a memorable occasion.

But no venue, however prestigious, is more important than somebody’s wellbeing.

๐ŸŒ European Concerts Also Affected

The postponements extend across Germany, the Netherlands and France.

Following the two initial German concerts, another nine European performances have been placed on hold.

๐ŸŽธ Additional Postponed European Concerts

Together with Leipzig, Hamburg and the six UK dates, 17 concerts are affected by the confirmed European and British postponements.

The German promoter RBK Fusion has also confirmed that the affected concerts are being postponed on medical advice.

No replacement dates have been announced.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Already Bought Tickets? Don’t Throw Them Away!

Right then, here’s some practical advice for everyone who had already booked tickets.

Keep hold of them!

DEEP PURPLE have confirmed that previously purchased tickets will remain valid for the corresponding rearranged performances.

Several venues, including Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, Newcastle’s Utilita Arena and Manchester’s AO Arena, have published postponement notices.

The venues are advising ticket holders to retain their tickets while new dates are being arranged.

If you’ve booked accommodation, trains or other travel, it’s worth reviewing your booking conditions as soon as possible.

Refund arrangements for those additional purchases will depend on the individual provider.

And if you’re wondering about concert ticket refunds, check directly with the original authorised retailer.

Policies may differ depending on whether a show is rearranged, cancelled or remains awaiting a new date.

Most importantly, don’t buy replacement tickets or make new travel arrangements based on unconfirmed social media posts.

Wait for official announcements.

๐ŸŒŽ What About The December 2026 South American Dates?

This is another question fans have understandably been asking.

DEEP PURPLE are also scheduled to perform concerts in Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Mexico during December.

Those performances are separate from the European and UK leg addressed in Gillan’s official postponement statement.

As of 3 November, the band’s official touring calendar continues to list the December dates without the same postponement notices attached to the November concerts.

However, some music publications have reported that the disruption also extends to the Latin American performances.

The band’s statement has not explicitly confirmed the postponement of those December shows, so their status should be treated as awaiting further clarification.

Anyone planning to attend should monitor announcements from the band, local promoter and ticket provider.

Given the circumstances, it’s important not to assume either that the concerts are definitely going ahead or that they’ve all been formally cancelled.

๐ŸŽธ DEEP PURPLE Were Touring Their Latest Album, SPLAT!

The medical emergency comes during another remarkably productive period for the legendary hard rock band.

DEEP PURPLE released their 24th studio album, SPLAT!, on 3 July 2026, through earMUSIC.

Produced by longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin, the album marked another chapter in a musical career stretching back to 1968.

And rather than simply relying on their classic catalogue, the band continued exploring new material.

The album was promoted with singles including Arrogant Boy, Diablo and Guilt Trippin’.

Its concept explores transformation and humanity moving beyond physical existence.

Pretty ambitious stuff, isn’t it?

Then again, this is DEEP PURPLE.

A band that helped establish the foundations of hard rock and heavy metal.

They’ve never been particularly interested in doing things by halves!

The accompanying tour gave audiences a chance to experience the new music alongside some of the band’s greatest songs.

And let’s be honest.

When you’ve got a catalogue containing Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, Black Night, Space Truckin’, Perfect Strangers and Child In Time, you’ve certainly got plenty of material to choose from.

๐Ÿค˜ Ian Gillan โ€“ One Of The Greatest Voices In Hard Rock History

For younger readers who might not fully appreciate Ian Gillan’s enormous contribution to rock music, here’s a little reminder.

Born on 19 August 1945, Gillan became one of the defining vocalists of the hard rock movement.

He joined DEEP PURPLE in 1969, becoming part of the band’s celebrated Mark II line-up alongside Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover and Ian Paice.

Together, they created some of the most influential albums in rock history.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Deep Purple In Rock (1970)

An enormous milestone in the development of hard rock.

Featuring songs including Speed King and Child In Time, the album helped establish the band’s heavier musical direction.

๐ŸŽธ Fireball (1971)

A powerful follow-up that demonstrated the group’s technical ability, songwriting ambition and musical versatility.

๐Ÿค˜ Machine Head (1972)

The album that delivered one of the most recognisable guitar riffs ever recorded.

Smoke On The Water.

You know the one.

Four unmistakable opening notes.

A riff that has inspired countless aspiring guitarists.

And probably caused thousands of music teachers to quietly question their career choices!

Honestly, butt, you could walk into almost any guitar shop in Wales and probably hear somebody attempting it within five minutes.

And that’s not a criticism.

That’s the extraordinary influence of one simple, brilliant riff.

๐Ÿฅ Made In Japan (1972)

Widely regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums ever recorded, Made In Japan captured DEEP PURPLE at the height of their early powers.

Gillan’s vocals were a huge part of that performance.

His extraordinary range, dramatic delivery and unmistakable tone helped establish him as one of rock’s most distinctive frontmen.

And his influence can still be heard in generations of hard rock and heavy metal singers.

๐ŸŽค A Career That Goes Far Beyond DEEP PURPLE

Of course, Gillan’s musical history doesn’t begin and end with DEEP PURPLE.

He also enjoyed a successful career outside the band.

In 1970, he provided the original recorded voice of Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.

He subsequently fronted his own musical projects, including the Ian Gillan Band and Gillan.

And in one of rock history’s more unexpected line-up changes, he joined BLACK SABBATH in the early 1980s.

His time with the Birmingham heavy metal legends resulted in the 1983 album Born Again.

Yes, butt.

The man who helped make Smoke On The Water famous also spent time fronting the band responsible for Iron Man and Paranoid.

That’s quite the musical CV!

Gillan returned to DEEP PURPLE during the band’s 1984 reunion and, following another period away, rejoined in 1992.

He has remained the group’s lead singer ever since.

His contribution to hard rock is enormous.

And the fact that he’s continued performing into his eighties is a testament to his dedication.

But dedication shouldn’t mean ignoring medical advice.

And right now, taking time away from touring is clearly the necessary decision.

๐ŸŽน Who Are The Current Members Of DEEP PURPLE?

The current DEEP PURPLE line-up features a remarkable combination of musical experience and talent.

๐ŸŽค Ian Gillan โ€“ Lead Vocals

The legendary singer whose unmistakable voice has helped define the band’s music for decades.

๐ŸŽธ Simon McBride โ€“ Guitar

The Northern Irish guitarist who joined the group in 2022, replacing longtime guitarist Steve Morse.

๐ŸŽธ Roger Glover โ€“ Bass Guitar

One of DEEP PURPLE’s most important musicians, contributing to the band’s songwriting, production and unmistakable sound.

๐Ÿฅ Ian Paice โ€“ Drums

The band’s sole remaining original member, providing the thunderous rhythmic foundation since 1968.

๐ŸŽน Don Airey โ€“ Keyboards

The extraordinary keyboard player whose career includes work with OZZY OSBOURNE, RAINBOW, GARY MOORE and many other major artists.

Together, these musicians have kept DEEP PURPLE recording and performing internationally.

And despite the band’s long history, they’ve continued introducing their music to new generations.

๐ŸŽธ MAMMOTH And JAYLER Were Set To Support The UK Tour

The British concerts were also expected to feature two exciting special guests.

MAMMOTH, led by Wolfgang Van Halen, were scheduled to support the band on the non-London dates.

Wolfgang has established himself as a talented musician and songwriter, building a successful hard rock project away from the enormous legacy of his father, Eddie Van Halen.

Meanwhile, rising British rockers JAYLER were also announced for the tour.

Their involvement would have provided another opportunity for the younger musicians to perform in front of substantial audiences.

And that’s something we always love seeing here at The Riff Report.

Established legends helping introduce the next generation of rock talent to bigger stages.

Unfortunately, the postponements also disrupt those opportunities.

Any revised support line-ups will need to be confirmed alongside the rescheduled dates.

๐Ÿ‰ A Message From Wales To Ian Gillan

Here in Wales, we know a thing or two about proper rock music.

From the mighty BUDGIE to the MANIC STREET PREACHERS, SKINDRED, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and countless grassroots bands making noise across Cymru, we’ve always had a strong connection with loud guitars and powerful live performances.

And the influence of DEEP PURPLE stretches across that entire musical world.

Their songs have inspired generations of musicians.

Their albums have become essential listening.

And Ian Gillan’s voice has been part of the soundtrack to countless lives.

Whether you’re an older fan who remembers buying Machine Head when it first appeared or a younger rocker who’s only recently discovered Highway Star, the band’s importance is impossible to ignore.

That’s why news of Gillan’s hospitalisation has understandably hit fans hard.

But there’s one thing worth remembering.

Musicians aren’t indestructible.

They’re people.

They have families.

They have lives away from the stage.

And sometimes they need to put everything else aside and focus on their health.

Ian has spent decades giving audiences extraordinary performances.

He’s recorded legendary albums.

He’s toured internationally.

And he’s helped shape the music we all love.

At 81, he’s certainly earned the right to take whatever time he needs.

So from here in Wales, we’d like to send our very best wishes.

Get well soon, Ian. The Welsh rock community is rooting for you, butt! ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ’œ

โค๏ธ Fans React To The Worrying News

The announcement has prompted messages of concern and support from across the rock community.

And that’s hardly surprising.

DEEP PURPLE aren’t simply another band.

They’re an institution.

For many fans, their music is connected to decades of personal memories.

The first album they bought.

The first concert they attended.

A favourite guitar riff.

Or an unforgettable evening standing in a packed arena singing along to songs they’d loved for years.

When an artist has been part of people’s lives for that long, news of a health emergency naturally feels significant.

But there’s something important about how fans respond.

It’s possible to be disappointed about a postponed concert while still understanding why the decision was necessary.

Both feelings are perfectly reasonable.

Nobody enjoys losing a night they’ve been looking forward to.

Especially when they’ve spent money on tickets, hotels and travel.

But the priority has to be giving Gillan the time and space he needs.

And if that means waiting longer to hear those legendary songs performed live, then so be it.

Because there’s a world of difference between wanting a band to return and expecting somebody to perform when doctors have warned against it.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Riff Report Verdict โ€“ The Music Can Wait, Ian!

There’s no easy way to hear that one of rock’s greatest singers has required urgent hospital treatment.

And there’s certainly no easy way for a band to postpone a major international tour.

But sometimes the correct decision is obvious.

Health comes first.

Ian Gillan has spent more than five decades helping create and perform some of the most influential music in rock history.

From the extraordinary vocal performance of Child In Time to the timeless power of Highway Star and Smoke On The Water, his contribution is impossible to overstate.

He’s been part of a band that helped change the direction of rock music.

He’s influenced generations of singers.

And he’s entertained millions of fans around the world.

That’s an extraordinary achievement.

So if doctors say it’s time to step away from the stage, then that’s what needs to happen.

The concerts can be rearranged.

The venues can reopen their diaries.

The fans can hold onto their tickets.

And the music will still be there.

Machine Head isn’t going anywhere.

Made In Japan will still sound magnificent tomorrow.

And that unmistakable guitar riff from Smoke On The Water will probably still be echoing around guitar shops in another 50 years.

As for Ian?

We hope he’s receiving the best possible care and support.

We hope he’s able to take the time he needs.

And we hope that, whenever it’s appropriate, he’ll be able to enjoy whatever comes next without unnecessary pressure.

You’ve given us a lifetime of extraordinary music, Ian. You’ve got absolutely nothing left to prove.

So take care of yourself, butt.

The fans will understand.

And the rock community will be waiting with those horns held high.

Sending love and best wishes from Wales. Get well soon, Ian Gillan! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ‰

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
