On This Day In Rock History – 16 August 1977

There are dates in music history that feel bigger than a line on a calendar.

16 August 1977 is one of them.

On this day, the world lost Elvis Presley, the man who became known simply as The King of Rock ’n’ Roll.

He was just 42 years old.

Nearly half a century later, Elvis remains one of the most recognisable, influential and endlessly discussed figures popular music has ever produced.

Before stadium rock. Before MTV. Before music videos became mini-movies. Before rock stars filled arenas with screaming fans and merchandise stalls sold everything from shirts to mugs…

There was Elvis.

And music was never quite the same again. 🎸⚡

🖤 16 August 1977

Elvis Presley died at his famous Graceland home in Memphis, Tennessee, on 16 August 1977.

Earlier that afternoon, he was found unresponsive in the bathroom of the mansion. Attempts were made to revive him before he was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The announcement sent shockwaves across the world.

Fans gathered outside Graceland.

Radio stations abandoned normal programming.

Newspapers rushed special editions into print.

For millions of people, it wasn’t simply the death of another famous singer.

The King was gone.

Elvis had become such a huge part of popular culture that it was almost impossible to imagine a world without him.

Yet behind the rhinestones, screaming crowds and enormous fame was a man whose final years had become increasingly difficult.

His health had deteriorated, his touring schedule remained demanding, and prescription medication had become a major part of his life.

The official cause of death was initially reported as cardiac arrhythmia, while the circumstances surrounding his health and drug use have continued to be examined and debated for decades.

Whatever the medical complexities surrounding that terrible day, one fact remains painfully simple:

Elvis Presley was dead at only 42.

🎸 Before Elvis Became The King

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on 8 January 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

His beginnings couldn’t have been much further removed from the extraordinary wealth and fame that would eventually surround him.

Elvis grew up in a working-class family, absorbing the sounds that surrounded him — gospel, country, rhythm and blues.

Those influences would eventually collide inside one ridiculously charismatic young performer.

The Presley family moved to Memphis in 1948, placing teenage Elvis in one of America’s great musical melting pots.

Then came Sun Records.

And that’s where things started getting very interesting indeed.

🎙️ Sun Records And The Birth Of Something Huge

In 1954, Elvis began recording with producer Sam Phillips at Sun Records.

With guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Elvis recorded a version of Arthur Crudup’s “That’s All Right.”

⚡ Boom.

Something was happening.

Elvis wasn’t inventing rock ’n’ roll single-handedly — that history belongs to a much wider collection of pioneering Black and white musicians whose blues, gospel, R&B and country recordings helped create the genre.

But Elvis became one of the people who blasted that developing sound into mainstream popular culture on an absolutely enormous scale.

His combination of country, blues and R&B influences became explosive.

And then people saw him perform.

Oh, mun.

That was another matter entirely. 😈

🕺 Those Hips Caused Absolute Carnage

To modern audiences, Elvis shaking his hips might seem pretty tame.

In conservative 1950s America?

You’d have thought he’d personally detonated a bomb underneath polite society.

His movements were considered provocative.

Parents complained.

Commentators panicked.

Some television broadcasts famously avoided showing his entire body.

Naturally, teenagers absolutely bloody loved him. 😂

That rebellious energy is one of the foundations rock music has been building upon ever since.

Every generation gets its artist that adults supposedly don’t understand.

Elvis was one of the first global examples.

👑 Elvis Becomes The King

After moving from Sun Records to RCA Victor, Elvis became a phenomenon.

Then came the records.

🎵 Heartbreak Hotel

🎵 Hound Dog

🎵 Don’t Be Cruel

🎵 Love Me Tender

🎵 Jailhouse Rock

🎵 All Shook Up

🎵 Teddy Bear

🎵 Are You Lonesome Tonight?

🎵 It’s Now or Never

🎵 Can’t Help Falling in Love

🎵 Suspicious Minds

🎵 Burning Love

…and plenty more.

Elvis wasn’t merely selling records.

He was becoming a cultural event.

The hairstyle.

The clothes.

The sneer.

The dancing.

The voice.

The attitude.

That iconic curled lip alone probably had more stage presence than half the bands we’ve watched after three warm lagers at a festival. 😂🍺

🎬 Hollywood Comes Calling

Elvis also became a major movie star.

Beginning with Love Me Tender in 1956, he would eventually appear in more than 30 feature films.

Some became genuine Elvis classics.

Jailhouse Rock.

King Creole.

Viva Las Vegas.

Others were… well…

Let’s just say nobody’s putting every Elvis film in the same category as The Godfather. 😂

But Hollywood helped turn Elvis from a hugely successful singer into something even bigger:

an international entertainment icon.

🪖 Elvis Goes Into The Army

At the absolute height of Elvismania, Presley was drafted into the US Army.

He entered military service in 1958 and served in Germany.

Imagine being the biggest rock ’n’ roll star on the planet and suddenly having to swap screaming teenagers for military drills.

Proper career change, that.

During his military service, Elvis also met Priscilla Beaulieu, whom he would later marry.

Elvis returned to civilian life in 1960 and resumed his entertainment career, but the musical landscape was changing rapidly.

Soon Britain would be exporting a few noisy lads across the Atlantic.

The Beatles were coming.

The Rolling Stones were coming.

Rock music was evolving.

Elvis needed another moment.

He got one.

🔥 The ’68 Comeback Special

If anyone ever asks you what a rock ’n’ roll comeback looks like, point them towards Elvis’ 1968 television special.

Black leather.

Small stage.

Elvis surrounded by musicians.

No ridiculous distractions required.

Just charisma pouring through the screen.

🔥🔥🔥

The ’68 Comeback Special reminded everyone exactly why Elvis Presley had become Elvis Presley.

He looked dangerous again.

He sounded hungry again.

And crucially, he looked like he was enjoying himself.

It remains one of the defining performances of his career.

🎰 Viva Las Vegas – The Jumpsuit Years

Then came another version of Elvis.

Vegas Elvis.

Big collars.

Huge belts.

Rhinestones.

Jumpsuits.

Capes.

Backing singers.

Massive arrangements.

Pure spectacle.

Some of the imagery has become so familiar that it’s almost caricatured today, but underneath all those sequins was still one hell of a singer.

His Las Vegas residencies became legendary, while Elvis continued touring across the United States.

And those jumpsuits?

Let’s face it.

If you’re going to walk onto a stage dressed like you’ve defeated a rhinestone-covered final boss, you’d better have the voice to back it up.

Elvis did. 👑😂

🌎 Aloha From Hawaii

In January 1973, Elvis delivered another enormous moment with Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite.

The concert was broadcast internationally and became one of the most famous television performances of his career.

By this point Elvis wasn’t simply an American celebrity.

He was global.

Remarkably, despite his worldwide fame, Elvis never performed a public concert in the UK.

No Wembley.

No Cardiff.

No Glasgow.

Nothing.

Imagine Elvis turning up at a muddy Welsh festival field.

White jumpsuit.

Cape.

Rain coming sideways.

Someone handing him chips and curry sauce.

Now that would’ve been history, butt. 😂🏴

🖤 The Difficult Final Years

Unfortunately, Elvis’ personal life and health became increasingly troubled during the 1970s.

His marriage to Priscilla ended in divorce.

His physical condition deteriorated.

He struggled with prescription medication.

Yet he continued performing.

Sometimes brilliantly.

Sometimes visibly struggling.

That contrast makes footage from Elvis’ final years difficult viewing at times.

Behind one of the biggest names entertainment had ever produced was a human being dealing with enormous pressures.

His final concert took place in Indianapolis on 26 June 1977.

Less than two months later, Elvis Presley was dead.

🕯️ The World Says Goodbye

Following Elvis’ death, enormous numbers of mourners travelled to Memphis.

Thousands gathered around Graceland.

Fans cried in the streets.

Radio stations played his records.

Tributes arrived from across entertainment.

His funeral took place on 18 August 1977.

Elvis was initially buried at Forest Hill Cemetery alongside his mother, Gladys, before their remains were later moved to the Meditation Garden at Graceland.

Graceland itself would eventually become one of the world’s most famous music landmarks.

Fans still travel there from every corner of the planet.

Because Elvis fandom didn’t disappear when Elvis died.

If anything, the legend grew.

🎸 Elvis And The Birth Of The Modern Rock Star

Trying to measure Elvis Presley’s influence is like trying to count every pint consumed at Download.

Good luck.

The Beatles admired him.

John Lennon famously spoke about the enormous impact Elvis had on him.

Artists including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Elton John and countless others have acknowledged his importance.

His influence reaches beyond musicians too.

Think about the basic blueprint of the modern rock star:

🔥 Distinctive clothes
🔥 Recognisable hairstyle
🔥 Rebellious image
🔥 Huge stage presence
🔥 Fans screaming uncontrollably
🔥 Television appearances becoming cultural events
🔥 Merchandise everywhere
🔥 Controversy following every move
🔥 Music and celebrity becoming inseparable

Sound familiar?

Elvis helped establish that template.

🎵 But Elvis Didn’t Create Rock ’n’ Roll Alone

And this bit matters.

The Elvis story should never erase the Black musicians whose work was fundamental to rock ’n’ roll’s creation.

Artists including Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Fats Domino, Big Mama Thornton and numerous blues, gospel and rhythm-and-blues musicians helped build the musical foundations upon which rock exploded.

Elvis himself was deeply influenced by Black American music.

Rock ’n’ roll wasn’t invented by one bloke in Memphis.

It emerged through generations of musical cross-pollination.

Elvis became one of its biggest ambassadors — and undoubtedly its first truly gigantic global superstars.

Recognising the pioneers who came before and alongside him doesn’t diminish Elvis’ legacy.

It gives rock history the full respect it deserves. 🤘

👑 Why Elvis Still Matters

Nearly 50 years after his death, Elvis remains everywhere.

His records continue to be played.

His image remains instantly recognisable.

Graceland continues attracting visitors.

Films and documentaries continue exploring his life.

New generations continue discovering the music.

And people are still impersonating him.

So. Many. Elvis. Impersonators.

Some brilliant.

Some absolutely terrifying. 😂

But that’s what happens when somebody becomes bigger than the era they belonged to.

They stop simply being an artist.

They become part of culture.

🕯️ 16 August – Remembering The King

On 16 August 1977, rock ’n’ roll lost one of its defining figures.

Elvis Presley was complicated.

His story contains extraordinary success, controversy, cultural change, tragedy and a level of fame almost impossible to comprehend.

But strip everything else away and put the needle on one of those records.

Listen to “That’s All Right.”

Listen to “Heartbreak Hotel.”

Crank “Jailhouse Rock.”

Watch that 1968 Comeback Special.

Then you understand why people lost their minds.

There was electricity there.

Something dangerous.

Something exciting.

Something new.

And generations of musicians followed the trail.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
