Big hair. Bigger choruses. Guitar solos visible from space. Welcome back to 1986.

There are years in rock history that were merely good.

Then there are years where somebody apparently kicked open the studio door, emptied six cans of hairspray into the atmosphere, plugged a Marshall stack directly into the National Grid and shouted:

“RIGHT THEN — LET’S HAVE IT!”

🔥 1986 was one of those years.

Rock radio was absolutely bloody glorious.

You had Bon Jovi becoming global superstars. Europe unleashing a keyboard riff that would follow humanity until the end of civilisation. Peter Gabriel turning art-rock into enormous pop. Genesis dominating the airwaves. Van Halen proving they could survive a change of singer. Metallica releasing one of metal’s defining albums.

And then Run-D.M.C. teamed up with Aerosmith and helped smash down the wall between rock and hip-hop.

What a ridiculous twelve months.

So grab your imaginary Walkman, rewind that battered cassette with a pencil and prepare for a massive nostalgia trip.

Here are 40 songs that helped define rock radio in 1986.

40. The Bangles – Manic Monday

Okay, not exactly Motörhead, granted.

But if we’re talking about the sound of radio in 1986, you simply cannot ignore Manic Monday.

Written by Prince under the pseudonym Christopher, the track became one of The Bangles’ signature songs and was absolutely everywhere.

That opening piano alone can teleport you straight back to the mid-’80s.

39. Steve Winwood – Higher Love

🎹 Peak sophisticated ’80s radio.

Steve Winwood returned to the mainstream in enormous fashion with Higher Love, combining rock, soul and polished pop production into something practically designed to blast from car stereos.

And those drums?

Massive.

Everything in 1986 sounded like the drums had been recorded inside an aircraft hangar.

We approve.

38. Robert Palmer – Addicted to Love

That riff.

That suit.

That video.

Those expressionless backing musicians.

Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love became one of the defining rock-pop tracks of the decade.

It’s ridiculously simple, ridiculously catchy and still sounds enormous today.

🎸 Might as well face it…

You’re singing it already.

37. Billy Idol – To Be a Lover

Billy Idol swaggered through the ’80s like somebody had given punk rock a leather jacket, MTV and an unlimited hairspray budget.

To Be a Lover showed his knack for turning older influences into glossy rock-radio dynamite.

Billy was cool.

Annoyingly cool.

36. Boston – Amanda

Nearly a decade after Boston’s monster debut album, the band returned with Third Stage and somehow immediately reclaimed rock radio.

Amanda became a huge hit without needing a flashy music video.

Just melody.

Guitars.

And harmonies polished enough to see your reflection in them.

Proper job.

35. Survivor – Is This Love

Survivor had already conquered the world with Eye of the Tiger, but they weren’t finished chucking enormous choruses at radio programmers.

Is This Love delivered everything you’d want from mid-’80s melodic rock.

Big vocals.

Big keyboards.

Big feelings.

Basically, subtlety had been banned.

34. Journey – Be Good to Yourself

Journey entered 1986 with Raised on Radio, an album title that practically demanded inclusion here.

Be Good to Yourself is classic Journey — Steve Perry soaring over shimmering keyboards and Neal Schon guitar work.

Windows down.

Volume up.

Petrol station sausage roll secured.

Let’s go.

33. The Rolling Stones – Harlem Shuffle

Even during the decade of synths, glam metal and MTV, the old guard weren’t disappearing quietly.

The Rolling Stones released their version of Harlem Shuffle in 1986, giving rock radio another dose of Jagger swagger.

Because apparently Mick Jagger is physically incapable of not swaggering.

32. The Fabulous Thunderbirds – Tuff Enuff

Blues rock barged into the mainstream with Tuff Enuff.

Powered by Kim Wilson’s vocals and a groove that could make a brick wall tap its foot, The Fabulous Thunderbirds suddenly found themselves all over American rock radio and MTV.

Sometimes you don’t need twelve guitar overdubs.

You just need groove.

31. Bruce Hornsby and the Range – The Way It Is

🎹 One of the most instantly recognisable piano openings of the decade.

The Way It Is blended rock, pop and socially conscious songwriting into something that became absolutely enormous.

It sounded different from almost everything else on mainstream radio.

And decades later?

Still magnificent.

🤘 NOW WE’RE GETTING LOUD…

30. Judas Priest – Turbo Lover

Right.

Leather trousers firmly secured.

Motorbike started.

Synthesiser plugged into the Marshall.

TURBOOOOO LOVER!

Judas Priest’s Turbo era divided some metal purists because of its embrace of guitar synthesisers and polished production.

But Turbo Lover?

Absolute anthem.

It sounds like Rob Halford driving a futuristic motorbike through a laser factory.

Which is essentially everything heavy metal should aspire to be.

29. Ozzy Osbourne – Shot in the Dark

Ozzy entered another chapter of his solo career with The Ultimate Sin, and Shot in the Dark became one of its biggest radio-friendly moments.

Jake E. Lee’s guitar work?

🔥🔥🔥

Ozzy’s voice?

Instantly recognisable.

The hair?

Magnificent.

1986 Ozzy looked like he’d personally fought a can of hairspray.

And won.

28. Iron Maiden – Wasted Years

While American radio was embracing glam and melodic hard rock, Iron Maiden were busy creating one of their most emotionally powerful songs.

Written by Adrian Smith, Wasted Years arrived on Somewhere in Time and delivered one of Maiden’s greatest guitar intros.

“Don’t waste your time always searching for those wasted years…”

A song about distance, touring and appreciating the life you’re actually living.

Beautiful stuff, mun.

🤘 Up the Irons.

27. Metallica – Master of Puppets

Was Metallica dominating mainstream Top 40 radio in 1986?

No.

Did Master of Puppets help redefine what heavy music could become?

Absolutely.

The title track from Metallica’s third album was an eight-plus-minute thrash-metal masterpiece filled with crushing riffs, tempo changes and astonishing musicianship.

No radio-friendly chorus.

No glamorous video.

No compromise.

Just riffs.

Lots and lots and lots of riffs.

🔥 MASTER! MASTER!

26. Queen – A Kind of Magic

Only Queen could make something simultaneously theatrical, mysterious and ridiculously catchy.

A Kind of Magic became another enormous entry in Queen’s catalogue during a period that also saw them cement their reputation as one of the greatest live bands on Earth.

Freddie Mercury could have sung a takeaway menu and somehow made Wembley Stadium chant it back.

25. Genesis – Land of Confusion

One of the defining videos of the MTV era accompanied one of Genesis’ strongest rock songs.

Land of Confusion paired Phil Collins’ massive drum sound with political lyrics and those famously unsettling Spitting Image puppets.

Children watching MTV in 1986:

😃 “Oh look, puppets!”

Thirty seconds later:

😨 “MAM!”

Still an absolute tune.

24. Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer

Peter Gabriel turned experimental pop-rock into blockbuster entertainment.

Sledgehammer had funk.

Soul.

Rock.

Brass.

An unforgettable stop-motion video.

And enough innuendo to keep your nan suspicious.

It became one of Gabriel’s signature recordings and remains inseparable from the visual explosion of MTV-era music.

23. Dire Straits – Walk of Life

Released on Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life remained a massive radio presence around this period.

That keyboard melody is basically musical sunshine.

You hear five seconds and immediately picture sports bloopers, denim jackets and somebody driving a Ford Capri.

Lovely stuff.

22. INXS – What You Need

Before Kick transformed INXS into international megastars, What You Need helped push the Australian band further into the mainstream.

Michael Hutchence had charisma leaking out of every pore.

Rock?

Funk?

Pop?

New wave?

Yes.

All of it.

21. Bon Jovi – You Give Love a Bad Name

💥 SHOT THROUGH THE HEART!

There it is.

One of the greatest opening lines in rock-radio history.

Bon Jovi had already enjoyed success, but Slippery When Wet launched them into another universe.

You Give Love a Bad Name had everything radio wanted.

Huge chorus.

Huge guitars.

Huge hair.

Jon Bon Jovi looking directly into the camera like he personally knew your girlfriend was about to dump you.

📻 THE TOP 20

20. Cinderella – Nobody’s Fool

Cinderella emerged from Philadelphia and immediately proved there was more substance lurking beneath the hairspray.

Nobody’s Fool is a cracking power ballad.

Tom Keifer’s raspy vocals gave Cinderella a bluesier edge than many of their contemporaries.

And when that chorus arrives?

🔥 Lighters in the air.

Or phone torches nowadays.

Doesn’t quite have the same danger, does it?

19. Europe – Rock the Night

Everyone remembers that other Europe song.

We’ll get there.

But Rock the Night deserves its flowers too.

Massive chorus.

Massive guitars.

Massive optimism.

It practically demands that you punch the air while holding a pint.

Carefully, mind.

18. David Lee Roth – Yankee Rose

Diamond Dave left Van Halen and decided subtlety was for cowards.

Yankee Rose arrived with Steve Vai performing guitar witchcraft while Roth did what Roth does best:

Shout.

Leap.

Grin.

Wear trousers nobody else could legally operate.

Rock ’n’ roll.

17. Van Halen – Dreams

Meanwhile…

Van Halen were doing perfectly fine without him.

Dreams showcased Sammy Hagar’s soaring vocals and Eddie Van Halen’s seemingly effortless guitar brilliance.

It was melodic, uplifting and absolutely enormous.

The Van Hagar era had officially arrived.

16. Van Halen – Why Can’t This Be Love

The first Van Halen single featuring Sammy Hagar had one enormous job:

Prove Van Halen could survive without David Lee Roth.

Mission accomplished.

Why Can’t This Be Love became a huge hit and helped turn 5150 into a monster success.

The debate between Roth-era and Hagar-era fans?

That’ll probably continue until the sun explodes.

15. The Pretenders – Don’t Get Me Wrong

Chrissie Hynde casually delivered another masterclass in writing ridiculously catchy guitar music.

Don’t Get Me Wrong sparkles.

There’s no better word for it.

It’s warm, melodic and instantly recognisable.

A perfect slice of ’80s radio rock.

14. Bon Jovi – Wanted Dead or Alive

🎸 “I’m a cowboy…”

And suddenly every bloke within twenty metres believes he’s wandering through the American wilderness rather than sitting outside a Wetherspoons.

Wanted Dead or Alive turned touring exhaustion into rock mythology.

Richie Sambora’s guitar work.

Jon’s vocals.

That enormous final section.

Bon Jovi weren’t merely becoming successful.

They were becoming icons.

13. Heart – These Dreams

Heart successfully reinvented themselves for the MTV generation.

These Dreams, featuring Nancy Wilson on lead vocals, showed the softer, atmospheric side of the band’s hugely successful mid-’80s period.

Dreamy keyboards.

Huge production.

Power-ballad perfection.

12. The Outfield – Your Love

🎶 Josie’s on a vacation far away…

STOP.

You’re singing it.

Of course you are.

Your Love became an enduring radio staple and one of those songs that somehow feels permanently attached to the decade.

And yes, The Outfield were British despite sounding like they’d been assembled specifically to soundtrack an American teen movie.

11. Steve Winwood – Back in the High Life Again

The title track from Winwood’s enormously successful album perfectly captures the optimistic sheen of mid-’80s radio.

Warm production.

Big melody.

Instant nostalgia.

It’s basically the musical equivalent of sunlight hitting the dashboard while you’re driving somewhere with absolutely no idea how much petrol costs.

🔥 THE RIFF REPORT TOP 10 🔥

10. Europe – The Final Countdown

🎹 DA-DA-DA-DAAAAAA…

Come on.

There was absolutely no chance this wasn’t making the Top 10.

Joey Tempest reportedly developed that immortal keyboard motif years before Europe recorded the song.

Once released?

Forget it.

Human civilisation was changed forever.

Sporting events.

Nightclubs.

Weddings.

Festivals.

Boxing entrances.

Pub karaoke.

Your mate Dave at 1:47am.

Everyone knows The Final Countdown.

Is it ridiculous?

Yes.

Is it brilliant?

ALSO YES.

9. Peter Gabriel – Big Time

If Sledgehammer turned Gabriel into an MTV superstar, Big Time continued the madness.

Funky.

Satirical.

Weird.

Catchy.

Gabriel was proving that adventurous music didn’t need to live exclusively in obscure record shops.

You could be strange and enormous.

8. Genesis – Invisible Touch

Genesis went nuclear with Invisible Touch.

The title track was slick, immediate and relentlessly catchy.

Phil Collins was seemingly everywhere during this period.

Solo career?

Huge.

Genesis?

Huge.

Drums?

Huge.

Forehead?

Iconic.

We love you, Phil.

7. Boston – Amanda

Yes, we’re giving this one extra love because its impact deserves it.

Amanda demonstrated that classic melodic rock still had enormous commercial power even while MTV transformed the industry.

Tom Scholz’s obsessive production style created that unmistakable Boston sound.

Layered guitars.

Huge harmonies.

Absolute perfectionism.

6. Bon Jovi – Livin’ on a Prayer

🎤 WOAAAAAHHHHH…

Michael, fetch the talk box.

We’re going in.

Livin’ on a Prayer might be the definitive Bon Jovi song.

Tommy and Gina.

Working-class struggle.

Richie Sambora’s talk-box riff.

A chorus seemingly engineered by scientists to make 70,000 people scream simultaneously.

Decades later, put this song on at any rock night and watch what happens.

Everyone joins in.

EVERYONE.

5. Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith – Walk This Way

This wasn’t merely a hit.

It was a cultural earthquake.

Run-D.M.C.’s collaboration with Aerosmith smashed rock and hip-hop together in front of a mainstream audience.

Steven Tyler.

Joe Perry.

Run.

DMC.

That wall-breaking music video became the perfect visual metaphor.

And for Aerosmith?

It helped introduce them to an entirely new generation shortly before their spectacular late-’80s comeback.

Rock radio would never quite be the same.

4. Van Halen – Best of Both Worlds

The title says it all.

Sammy Hagar brought something different to Van Halen.

Not better.

Not worse.

Different.

Best of Both Worlds captures the muscular, polished sound of 5150 brilliantly.

Eddie remained Eddie.

Which meant everyone else playing guitar simply had to accept they were competing with a bloke apparently operating under different laws of physics.

3. Metallica – Battery

🔥🔥🔥 THRASH MODE ENGAGED.

The gentle acoustic opening.

Then…

BANG.

Metallica kick the bloody doors off.

Battery perfectly demonstrates why Master of Puppets became such a landmark.

Ferocious riffs.

James Hetfield’s downpicking.

Lars Ulrich battering everything.

Cliff Burton providing the thunder underneath.

Kirk Hammett firing solos into orbit.

Metallica weren’t chasing radio.

Radio eventually had to chase Metallica.

2. Bon Jovi – You Give Love a Bad Name

Yes, Bon Jovi are all over this list.

Have you seen what happened in 1986?

Slippery When Wet was unavoidable.

And You Give Love a Bad Name remains one of those songs where the first five seconds instantly trigger communal shouting.

No introduction required.

No explanation necessary.

Just:

🎤 SHOT THROUGH THE HEART!

And the pub takes care of the rest.

🥇 1. Europe – The Final Countdown

Was there a more unmistakably 1986 rock song?

Maybe.

But few capture the glorious excess of the era quite like this.

The keyboards are enormous.

The guitars are enormous.

The chorus is enormous.

Joey Tempest’s hair probably required planning permission.

The Final Countdown sounds like somebody asked:

“How epic should we make this?”

And Europe replied:

“YES.”

Nearly four decades later, those opening notes still cause an immediate reaction.

You know what’s coming.

Your mates know what’s coming.

The bloke three tables away knows what’s coming.

🎹 DA-DA-DA-DAAAAAA…

Absolute 1986 perfection.

🎸 Honourable Mentions: Because 40 Wasn’t Enough

And this is the problem with doing a list about 1986.

You could keep going all bloody night.

Tracks from artists including ZZ Top, R.E.M., Talking Heads, The Smithereens, Billy Joel, Crowded House, The Police, Huey Lewis and the News, Bruce Springsteen, The Cure and many more were also floating around the broader rock and pop-radio landscape.

Then there were albums.

Good grief.

Metallica – Master of Puppets
Bon Jovi – Slippery When Wet
Iron Maiden – Somewhere in Time
Van Halen – 5150
Judas Priest – Turbo
Ozzy Osbourne – The Ultimate Sin
Europe – The Final Countdown
Queen – A Kind of Magic
Genesis – Invisible Touch
Peter Gabriel – So
Megadeth – Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?
Slayer – Reign in Blood

Read that again.

IN ONE YEAR.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

And we mean that as the highest compliment possible.

📻 Why 1986 Rock Radio Was So Bloody Special

1986 sat at a fascinating point in music history.

The giants of the ’70s were still around.

Heavy metal was becoming enormous.

Thrash was exploding underground.

Glam metal was preparing to conquer America.

Alternative rock was bubbling away.

MTV had transformed how bands became famous.

And pop production techniques were becoming bigger, shinier and more ridiculous.

The result was a musical landscape where Genesis could sit near Metallica, Bon Jovi could share airtime with Peter Gabriel and Aerosmith could suddenly appear alongside Run-D.M.C.

Genres were colliding.

Audiences were changing.

And rock music was becoming increasingly visual.

You didn’t simply need a great song anymore.

You needed the video.

The clothes.

The image.

The hair.

Especially the hair.

Good Lord, the hair.

📼 Remember Recording Songs Off the Radio?

And here’s something younger readers will never fully understand.

You couldn’t just open Spotify and instantly play whatever song you fancied.

Ohhhhh no.

You waited.

Cassette loaded.

Finger hovering over RECORD.

Radio DJ talking…

Still talking…

STILL TALKING…

🎶 SONG STARTS.

PRESS RECORD!

Then approximately three minutes later:

“And that was Bon Jo—”

STOP THE TAPE!

Too late.

Congratulations.

Your homemade mixtape now contains Dave the DJ speaking over the final seven seconds.

That was streaming in 1986, kids.

😂📼

🤘 1986 Was Absolutely Ridiculous

Look at that list again.

Bon Jovi.

Metallica.

Iron Maiden.

Judas Priest.

Ozzy.

Queen.

Van Halen.

Europe.

Genesis.

Peter Gabriel.

Aerosmith.

Run-D.M.C.

Heart.

Journey.

Boston.

And lurking just beyond mainstream radio were Slayer and Megadeth releasing records that would help shape extreme metal forever.

1986 wasn’t merely another year in rock.

It was a crossroads.

Classic rock met MTV.

Metal became bigger.

Thrash became faster.

Pop became shinier.

Hair became physically impossible.

And radio speakers across the planet took an absolute battering.

Would we go back?

Mate.

Give us a denim jacket, a cassette Walkman and a time machine.

We’ll meet you there.

🤘🔥📻🎸

💬 OVER TO YOU, RIFFERS!

What song immediately transports YOU back to 1986?

Did we miss an absolute monster?

Would you put Bon Jovi, Europe, Van Halen, Metallica or somebody completely different at Number One?

Get involved and tell us your ultimate 1986 rock-radio anthem.

And remember…

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. 🐉🤘

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
