Without them, your favourite gig probably wouldn’t happen…
When the lights go down, the crowd roars, and the first riff shakes the arena, most fans are focused on the band standing under the spotlight.
But long before that magical moment, an army of people have spent days – sometimes weeks – making it happen. One of the biggest names behind the scenes is Stagetruck Ltd, a company that has spent more than four decades transporting the stages, lighting, sound systems and production equipment that power some of the world’s biggest concerts.
From tiny beginnings with just two lorries to becoming one of Europe’s leading specialist touring transport companies, Stagetruck has become one of the music industry’s true success stories. Yet despite playing such a vital role in live entertainment, many fans have never even heard their name.
Here at The Riff Report, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the real heroes of rock ‘n’ roll.
🚚 Where It All Began
The story starts in the late 1970s.
Music was changing. Arena rock was booming, massive tours were becoming the norm, and bands were carrying more equipment than ever before. Yet there were very few transport companies that truly understood the unique demands of the live music business.
Seeing an opportunity, Robert and Judy Hewett decided to build something different.
Armed with just two trucks and operating from a modest Portakabin office in Hampshire, they created a company dedicated entirely to serving the entertainment industry.
What began as a small family-run operation would eventually grow into one of the most respected touring logistics companies in Europe.
The business was officially incorporated in February 1980 as Audiostore Limited before adopting the name Stagetruck Ltd in 2002—a name that has since become instantly recognisable backstage at concerts across the continent.
🎸 Built by Music Lovers, for Music Lovers
Moving equipment for concerts isn’t the same as delivering supermarket goods.
Every tour has strict schedules. Every venue has different loading bays. Every festival comes with unique challenges. If a truck is delayed, the consequences can be enormous.
Miss a delivery window and you could delay stage construction.
Delay the stage and you delay soundcheck.
Delay soundcheck and the entire show could be pushed back—or even cancelled.
That’s why reliability became the foundation of Stagetruck’s reputation.
Tour managers, production crews and promoters quickly realised they weren’t just hiring drivers—they were working with people who understood how live music actually worked.
🌍 Growing Across Europe
As touring productions became bigger and more international throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Stagetruck grew alongside them.
The company expanded its operations beyond the UK, developing the expertise needed to move equipment across borders while navigating customs regulations, ferry crossings and the increasingly complex world of international logistics.
Today, the company operates from its headquarters near Winchester, Hampshire, while also maintaining operations in The Netherlands and Romania, giving it extensive coverage across Europe.
Whether it’s a theatre production in Paris, an arena show in Berlin or a festival in Spain, chances are Stagetruck has helped get the gear there.
🚛 From Two Trucks to More Than 200
Perhaps the most impressive part of the company’s journey is the sheer scale of its growth.
Those original two trucks have evolved into a fleet of more than 200 specialist vehicles, supported by a team of over 300 employees.
Their modern fleet includes:
- 🚛 DAF XG tractors
- 🚛 DAF XF tractors
- 🚛 Volvo FH units
- ⚡ Electric MAN eHGVs
Every vehicle is maintained to exceptionally high standards, ensuring maximum reliability during demanding touring schedules where every minute counts.
🌱 Leading the Way in Green Touring
The music industry is increasingly looking at ways to reduce its environmental impact, and Stagetruck has been at the forefront of that effort.
The company has invested heavily in sustainable transport, including the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, which can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional diesel.
They’ve also introduced electric heavy goods vehicles and continue to develop smarter route planning to minimise fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions.
Some of the world’s biggest touring artists, including Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, have utilised these greener transport solutions as part of their efforts to make touring more sustainable.
It’s proof that even the biggest rock productions can start thinking differently about the future.
🇪🇺 Surviving Brexit
Brexit presented one of the biggest challenges the touring industry had faced in decades.
Suddenly, moving equipment between the UK and Europe became far more complicated, with new customs requirements, carnet paperwork and cross-border regulations.
Rather than slowing down, Stagetruck adapted.
By expanding its European operations and developing specialist expertise in international logistics, the company continued helping artists tour across the continent with as little disruption as possible.
Behind the scenes, that meant countless hours of planning and paperwork that most concert-goers will never see—but every successful tour depends on it.
🎤 The Backbone of Live Entertainment
Although many of the tours Stagetruck supports remain confidential, their trucks have become a familiar sight behind the scenes at countless concerts, festivals and major live productions.
Their work includes transporting:
- 🎸 Backline equipment
- 🔊 PA systems
- 💡 Lighting rigs
- 📺 LED video walls
- 🎪 Festival infrastructure
- 🎭 Theatre productions
- 🎪 Exhibition equipment
- 🛍️ Merchandise
Whether it’s one truck for an intimate club tour or well over a hundred articulated lorries for a stadium spectacular, Stagetruck has the experience to make it happen.
👨👩👧 Still a Family Business
One thing that makes Stagetruck particularly special is that it has remained proudly family owned throughout its history.
In an era where many transport companies have been absorbed into huge international logistics groups, the Hewett family has stayed true to the company’s original values.
That independence has helped preserve the personal service and close relationships that have become synonymous with the Stagetruck name.
🎶 Every Gig Starts With a Lorry
It’s easy to admire the guitar solos, the pyro, the giant video screens and the spectacular stage production.
But none of it simply appears overnight.
Every amplifier, drum kit, lighting truss, speaker cabinet, cable and video wall has to be transported, unloaded, assembled and, once the encore is over, packed away again before heading to the next city.
It’s an enormous logistical operation that happens almost invisibly—and companies like Stagetruck make it possible.
🤘 The Riff Report Verdict
Rock stars might get the standing ovations, but companies like Stagetruck Ltd deserve a massive round of applause too.
For more than 45 years they’ve quietly worked behind the scenes, helping deliver unforgettable nights of live music to millions of fans across Europe.
From humble beginnings with just two trucks to becoming one of the industry’s most trusted names, their story is one of passion, dedication and an unwavering commitment to keeping the show on the road.
So next time you’re stood in a festival field, singing your lungs out in an arena or watching your favourite band tear the roof off a venue, spare a thought for the convoy of lorries that got everything there.
