By: A Confused Rock Blogger Pretending to Know Burgers – for The Riff Report Blog
Right, so here’s the thing: I write about gigs, not gherkins. 🎸
But when someone said “Burger Boyz is opening in Cardiff!” I screamed “Yes chef!” and legged it down to Cowbridge Road East like a man possessed by the spirit of Greggs.
Now, before we go any further – I have no idea what a “smash burger” is. I assumed it meant you get to aggressively punch it like a Gallagher brother in a backstage fight. But apparently, it’s a technique. With heat. And sizzling. And… meat science?
Anyway – I went, I ate, I made unholy noises, and now I’m here to pretend I know what I’m talking about. Buckle up, butty.
🍔 What Even Is a Burger Boyz?
So these lads – Marcin and Jack – apparently ditched engineering (respect) and said “you know what this country needs? MEAT… but fun.”
They started with a van (called Truck Norris, which is elite naming), then upgraded to pubs, markets, and now Cardiff, the crown jewel in the burger crown.
They now occupy the spot once held by Ansh, which is a word I cannot pronounce but I assume meant “delicious.”
🧠 The Menu: AKA “Yes I’ll Have the One That Sounds the Most Like a Wrestling Move”
There are seven burgers to choose from. I panic-ordered the Chuck Norris, because it felt like the one most likely to kill me in combat.
Here’s what I think was in it:
- Beef (I hope)
- Cheese (orange and melty, so you know it’s classy)
- Sauce (mysterious but sexy)
- Onions (crispy? caramelised? friend-shaped?)
- A bun (obviously)
It came out looking like a beautiful mess – like if a Jackson Pollock painting came with fries.
I took one bite and made an involuntary noise. The kind of sound you make when the bass drops in a metal gig or when you step on a plug barefoot. Except this time, it was joy.
🍟 Loaded Fries? More Like Emotional Support Potatoes
You can get fries covered in all kinds of gooey wizardry. I got mine with cheese, pickles, crispy bits, maybe some jalapeños, and something that might have been aioli?
What is aioli, by the way? Garlic mayo in a tuxedo?
Anyway, the fries were filthy – in a good way. Like, “I need a nap and a hosepipe after this” filthy.
🍻 There’s Beer. Good Beer. Fancy Beer. I Don’t Know the Words.
They’ve got a little beer garden, which is lush when the sun’s out and you need to sip something cold while contemplating your life choices. I had a beer I couldn’t pronounce (I think it was Welsh for “hopsplosion”) and it tasted like… beer. But like, expensive beer. It made me feel like a man who owns succulents.
🎨 The Decor: I Feel Like I’m in a Burger Episode of Skins
The inside is graffiti madness. Neon signs, cartoon burger dudes, bright colours, booth seating – basically a teenage fever dream made out of meat and marker pens. I kept discovering new things on the wall every time I blinked. It’s like eating in a rebellious fridge.
The giant “BURGER BOYZ” mural above the seating? 10/10. Makes you feel like you’re in a very tasty comic book.
📍 The Location: Foodie Street, Apparently?
They’re on Cowbridge Road East, which I’m now told is Cardiff’s unofficial Michelin Star Avenue (not confirmed by Michelin, but it’s got vibes). You’ve got Hiraeth, Let Them See Cake, and Pettigrew Bakeries nearby – places I definitely plan to Google later to understand what they do.
And it’s opposite Victoria Park, which is lovely if you want to go lie down after your burger and stare at clouds while whispering “worth it” to yourself.
🧠 Final Thoughts from a Non-Foodie Trying to Foodie
I don’t know how to describe the flavour profile. I don’t know what umami means.
But I do know that Burger Boyz in Cardiff is absolute chaos in the best way – cheesy, beefy, saucy chaos that slaps you in the face and calls you gorgeous.
You don’t need to know food to love it.
You just need an appetite and no dignity when it comes to getting sauce on your trousers.
🍔 TL;DR: Go. Eat. Don’t ask questions. Thank me later. 🍟
