Every year, thousands of rock fans make the pilgrimage up the Welsh mountain for one of Britainโs most unique festivals. But alongside the standard weekend ticket sits the tempting VIP upgradeโpromising exclusive acoustic performances, dedicated facilities and a slightly more luxurious way to enjoy Steelhouse Festival.
Soโฆ after spending our first full weekend experiencing everything VIP had to offer, the question is simpleโฆ
Is it worth it?
As with most things in life, the answer isnโt simply yes or no. It depends on what kind of festival-goer you are.
Hereโs The Riff Reportโs honest verdict.
๐ธ The Biggest Selling Point โ The Acoustic Sets
Without question, the VIP Acoustic Stage is the jewel in the crown.
Watching artists perform just a few feet away in a relaxed marquee creates a completely different atmosphere to seeing them on the mountain stage. There are no giant barriers, no huge crowds pushing forwardโjust musicians, stories, banter and music in a wonderfully intimate setting.
One of the biggest surprises of the weekend came courtesy of Von Hertzen Brothers.
Walking into their acoustic performance, we genuinely didnโt know what to expect. The stripped-back set leaned heavily into folk influences, unusual instruments and a completely different vibe to what many first-time listeners might have anticipated. It left us scratching our heads a little and wondering what all the fuss was about.
Then came their main stage performanceโฆ
Wow.
It was one of those classic โnever judge a book by its coverโ moments. They absolutely exploded onto the mountain stage with a powerful, progressive rock masterclass that completely blew us away.
By the end of the set, they werenโt just one of the highlights of the dayโtheyโd become one of the standout discoveries of the entire festival.
It was a reminder that acoustic performances arenโt previews of the main showโtheyโre a chance to see another side of a band. Sometimes that softer, more experimental approach can completely hide the powerhouse waiting to emerge later.
If youโre attending VIP, keep an open mind. You might just discover your new favourite band.
โฐ The Scheduling Was Spot On
One thing Steelhouse absolutely nailed this year was the timing.
The acoustic performances were cleverly slotted between the main stage acts, allowing fans to experience both without constantly feeling like they had to choose one over the other.
Even better, if an acoustic performance slightly overran, the organisers delayed the main stage by a minute or two to allow everyone time to get across.
Itโs a small touch, but one that showed just how much thought had gone into the running order.
Little details like this make a huge difference to the overall experience.
๐ฝ Letโs Talk About the Posh Loosโฆ
Every festival review eventually comes to this subjectโฆ
The toilets.
VIP ticket holders donโt get standard portaloos. Instead, theyโre treated to proper trailer toilets with running water and a far more comfortable experience.
Are they glamorous?
No.
Are they a massive improvement?
Absolutely.
Anyone whoโs spent a weekend relying on festival toilets will appreciate the difference immediately. Itโs one of those upgrades you donโt realise youโll value until youโre there.
๐ค Celebrity Spotting? Youโre in the Right Place
One unexpected bonus of the VIP area is how relaxed everything feels.
Because bands regularly pass through the area between performances, thereโs a much higher chance of bumping into musicians than elsewhere on site.
Whether itโs grabbing a quick selfie, thanking someone for an incredible performance or simply saying, โLove your work,โ everyone seemed approachable and happy to chat.
Thereโs no guarantee youโll meet your heroes, but if youโre someone who enjoys those special festival moments, VIP definitely increases the odds.
๐ The Downsideโฆ Thereโs Hardly Any Time to Breathe
Ironically, one of VIPโs greatest strengths also becomes one of its biggest challenges.
The acoustic schedule is so good that youโll probably want to see everything.
Combine every acoustic performance with every main stage band, add in food, merchandise shopping, signing tent visits and the occasional wander around the arenaโฆ
โฆand suddenly youโve created a non-stop marathon.
There were moments when we realised weโd barely sat down all day.
By Saturday afternoon, tired feet and aching ankles were becoming very real companions.
If you like to squeeze every possible minute out of a festival, prepare yourself. VIP isnโt necessarily the relaxing upgrade you might imagineโit can actually become even busier.
๐ฅ The Height Dilemma
Crowds always present challenges, regardless of your height.
If youโre taller, thereโs the constant worry that youโre blocking somebody elseโs view. Nobody wants to be โthat person,โ and most taller fans do everything they can to be considerateโremoving hats, standing to one side where possible and staying in one place rather than moving around once a performance has started.
On the other hand, shorter festival-goers arguably face the bigger challenge.
The VIP marquee is intimate, which is fantastic, but it also means if you want a clear view, youโll probably need to arrive 15โ20 minutes early to secure a good position.
That could mean missing the end of a main stage performance.
Itโs one of the few unavoidable compromises of an otherwise excellent setup.
๐บ The VIP Bar Wasnโt Quite Perfect
One surprise during the weekend was the speed of service.
Although the VIP bar serves far fewer people than the main arena bars, drinks were prepared individually rather than having popular beers and ciders poured in advance.
As a result, queues could actually move slower than the main festival bar.
When all you want is a quick pint before the next band, spending 10โ15 minutes waiting behind just a handful of people feels surprisingly long.
Ironically, we often found ourselves walking back to the main arena bar instead.
๐ The VIP Food Truck
The food itself looked fantastic.
Everything coming out of the kitchen looked fresh, generous and incredibly tempting.
However, compared with the fantastic selection available around the main arena, it did come with a higher price tag.
For festival-goers watching every penny, the food village outside VIP still offers excellent quality and a wider range of choices at more budget-friendly prices.
Itโs not a criticism of the foodโjust something worth knowing before you upgrade.
๐ค Soโฆ Is VIP Worth It?
The answer depends entirely on what kind of festival experience youโre looking for.
If youโre hoping for somewhere quiet to relax all day, you may actually find yourself busier than ever.
If youโre upgrading purely for luxury, the extra facilities are nice but probably wonโt justify the cost on their own.
Howeverโฆ
If you love discovering new musicโฆ
If intimate acoustic performances excite youโฆ
If you enjoy meeting musiciansโฆ
If you want a different perspective on the bands youโve travelled to seeโฆ
Then the VIP experience becomes something genuinely special.
For us, the acoustic stage alone almost justified the upgrade.
Everything elseโthe better toilets, relaxed atmosphere and chance encounters with musiciansโsimply added to the experience.

Steelhouse Festival continues to prove why itโs one of the friendliest rock festivals anywhere in the UK, and the VIP experience reflects that perfectly.
Itโs not about champagne, velvet ropes or exclusivity.
Itโs about getting closer to the music.
Closer to the artists.
Closer to the community.
Could a few things be improved? Absolutely. Faster bar service and perhaps a little more seating would make a noticeable difference.
But would we consider VIP again?
Definitelyโespecially if the acoustic line-up is as strong as it was this year.
Sometimes the best moments at a festival arenโt on the biggest stage.
Sometimes theyโre inside a marquee, a few feet from the artist, hearing stories and songs in a way youโll never experience anywhere else.
And thatโs something pretty special.
