Bloodstock Open Air has shared another glimpse of its wonderfully bonkers Pillow Fight Club, where festivalgoers swapped circle pits for cushion-based carnage in the Battle Arena. Fair play, mun โ€” heavy metal has never looked so comfy.

There are certain things you expect to see at Bloodstock Festival: crushing riffs, battle jackets, inflatable dinosaurs, pints being raised towards the heavens and enough black T-shirts to temporarily blot out the sun.

A group of grown metalheads knocking seven shades of stuffing out of one another with pillows?

Actually, thinking about it, that sounds exactly like Bloodstock.

The festival has shared footage from its gloriously chaotic Pillow Fight Club, along with one very important message:

โ€œFirst rule of Pillow Fight Club โ€” talk all about Pillow Fight Club.โ€

Well, crack open the biscuits and get comfortable, butt, because weโ€™re absolutely talking about it.

Welcome to the Fluff Pit

Introduced as part of the entertainment inside Bloodstockโ€™s Battle Arena, Pillow Fight Club gave festivalgoers the chance to step into the ring and settle their differences using the most feared weapon known to anyone who has ever attended a childhood sleepover.

The humble pillow.

No steel chairs. No tables. No flaming guitars. Just two competitors, one ring and enough cushion-powered violence to make bedtime feel like the main event at WrestleMania.

The competition was hosted by Sam Strachan of Raised By Owls, who appears in Bloodstockโ€™s footage wearing a sparkling gold jacket and matching cowboy hat.

Itโ€™s an outfit that says part festival compere, part Las Vegas showman and part bloke who has somehow been placed in charge of a field full of armed lunatics.

His Raised By Owls bandmate Lee Deane took on refereeing duties, attempting to keep control as festivalgoers swung pillows, worked the crowd and fought for fluffy supremacy.

Thatโ€™s a proper job, that is.

Three Days of Cushion-Based Carnage

Pillow Fight Club took place at 4:30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with competitors progressing through tournament-style heats, semi-finals and a grand final.

A champion was crowned each day, but winning required more than simply swinging a pillow as though it had just insulted your favourite band.

Showmanship mattered.

Creative stage names, ridiculous costumes and crowd engagement could all help a competitor stand out. This was part pillow fight, part professional wrestling and part end-of-the-night campsite chaos after somebody pinched the last bag of chips.

Naturally, even organised pillow warfare needs rules:

  • Competitors could only swing their pillow using one hand.
  • Anyone stepping outside the ring forfeited the fight.
  • A knocked-down competitor had five seconds to get back onto their feet.
  • Pushing and grabbing were forbidden.
  • Pillows were the only permitted weapons.
  • Unsporting behaviour could result in punishment.
  • The refereeโ€™s whistle controlled warnings, stoppages and the end of each contest.
  • The refereeโ€™s decision was final โ€” even if the crowd disagreed loudly.

Participants were also asked to remove glasses, jewellery and piercings before entering the ring. Anyone who was injured, heavily intoxicated or had a health condition that made competing unsafe was told to remain outside the battle zone.

Because nobody wants to return home from Bloodstock and explain that they were taken out by a memory-foam pillow called Duvet of Destruction.

This Is Why We Love Bloodstock

From our little Welsh corner of the heavy-metal universe, weโ€™ve always loved festivals that understand the music is only part of the adventure.

A great festival creates stories.

It gives fans those strange, hilarious moments theyโ€™ll still be talking about months later. The moments that begin with, โ€œYouโ€™ll never believe what happened at Bloodstockโ€ฆโ€

Pillow Fight Club captured that spirit perfectly.

Where else could you watch some of the heaviest bands on the planet before wandering across a field and witnessing two metalheads trying to knock each other into next Tuesday with bedding?

It was daft, energetic, inclusive and completely committed to having fun. Nobody was standing around worrying about looking cool. Competitors threw themselves into the madness while the crowd cheered them on as though a world championship was at stake.

That sense of community is one of the reasons Bloodstock remains such a beloved festival. The people in the arena might look ready to summon something from the deepest corner of hell, but give them a pillow and theyโ€™ll immediately turn into overexcited children at a sleepover.

Metalheads really are the loveliest bunch of terrifying-looking people youโ€™ll ever meet.

Heavy Metal Meets Holiday-Camp Madness

Pillow Fight Club wasnโ€™t the only unusual activity available inside the Battle Arena.

Bloodstock also unleashed the Hellbent Hoedown, where festivalgoers combined heavy metal with line dancing. There were RockFit exercise sessions for anyone brave enough to attempt movement after a night in the campsite, plus an extreme-vocal workshop teaching people how to scream and growl without turning their vocal cords into pulled pork.

It all helped make the Battle Arena one of the festivalโ€™s most brilliantly unpredictable areas.

You could arrive expecting five minutes of shelter and end up line dancing to Trivium, learning how to growl or being challenged to a pillow fight by someone dressed as a dinosaur.

Only at Bloodstock, mun.

Bring Back Pillow Fight Club!

After seeing the footage, we reckon Pillow Fight Club deserves to become a permanent Bloodstock tradition.

Give it championship belts. Give the competitors entrance music. Add tag-team fights, dramatic introductions and a massive golden pillow suspended above the ring.

Imagine thousands of metalheads chanting as two cushion-wielding warriors battle for the prestigious Bloodstock Golden Duvet Championship.

You could even have Welsh qualifiers. Weโ€™ve been training for this since caravan holidays in Porthcawl, butt.

Bloodstockโ€™s video asks whether fans watched Pillow Fight Club. If you were there, let us know what you thought. Did you witness the madness from ringside? Did you step into the arena? Were you crowned champion, or did a rogue pillow send you back to your tent?

One thing is certain: Bloodstock proved that metalheads donโ€™t need guitars, flames or a wall of death to create chaos.

Sometimes, all you need is a pillow and absolutely no sense of shame.

The first rule of Bloodstock Pillow Fight Club? Tell everybody about Bloodstock Pillow Fight Club! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ
