Switzerland might not immediately spring to mind alongside Germany when you think about European metal festivals, but underestimate the Swiss scene at your peril.
This country has Greenfield Festival, Switzerland’s biggest rock gathering, sitting beneath the Alps. There’s Rock The Lakes, where Powerwolf, Arch Enemy and In Flames are battering the shores of Lake Neuchâtel. You’ve got Summerside, Riverside, and then enormous multi-genre institutions such as Paléo and the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival, both of which regularly bring serious rock royalty into the country.
Basically, Switzerland looked at mountains, lakes and beautiful countryside and thought:
“Needs more distortion.”

This is the festival associated with legendary performances from artists including Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, David Bowie and countless others.

Montreux is connected directly to one of rock’s most famous songs.
The 1971 Montreux Casino fire inspired Deep Purple’s:
“Smoke on the Water.”
So we’re absolutely claiming it.
The 2026 festival celebrated its massive 60th edition, with rock names including Deep Purple, Sting, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts appearing within a programme spanning jazz, rock, pop, soul and hip-hop.

You’ve got the River Aare.

You’ve got the castle overlooking proceedings.
And then somebody plugs in an enormous guitar amplifier.
Perfect.
Riverside Festival brings several days of rock ‘n’ roll into this spectacular Swiss setting.
There’s also camping, food, bars, market stalls, attractions and after-hours entertainment.
And if the bands during the day aren’t enough, the after-hours Metal Tent keeps the party going deep into the night.
Because apparently going to bed is for cowards.

Then head to Grenchen for Summerside.
July?
Down towards Lake Geneva.
Catch rock royalty at Montreux, then head towards Nyon for Paléo.
By August it’s time to get properly heavy.
Rock The Lakes gives you three days of metal beside Lake Neuchâtel before Riverside finishes the adventure in Aarburg.
By this stage the hire car contains:
Six festival wristbands.
Eleven band shirts.
Twenty-three empty coffee cups.
A battle jacket.
One cowbell somebody bought for reasons nobody fully understands.
And a receipt from a Swiss service station that has caused your bank to telephone and ask whether everything is alright.

Germany might have Wacken.
France might have Hellfest.
Belgium has Graspop.
But Switzerland has something spectacular of its own:

Montreux overlooking Lake Geneva.
Riverside beside the Aare with Aarburg Castle looming behind it.
You could take a photograph facing away from the stage and still end up with something worthy of a travel magazine.
Then turn around…

The country gave metal Celtic Frost, Coroner, Samael, Eluveitie, Krokus, Gotthard and plenty more.
