Here at The Riff Report, we LOVE showing off the photos we get at gigs, festivals, sweaty pits, backstage, and beyond. From front row madness at Download to fire-belching stages at Wacken, our cameras (and phones held dangerously high) are always snapping the magic. But lately… we’ve hit a bit of a snag.
Instagram’s new AI?
It’s got the attitude of a grumpy bouncer with no sense of fun.
Fishnets? Flagged. A bit of cleavage? Banned. Artistic lighting on a rock goddess mid-scream? Too spicy apparently. 😑
So now, we’re asking the big question:
🎸 SHOULD WE START WATERMARKING OUR PHOTOS?
We never wanted to go full Getty Images, but if our snaps are being flagged, reposted, or downright stolen, maybe it’s time to get cheeky with a little stamp of Riff identity.
Let’s break it down…
✅ WHY WATERMARKING MIGHT BE TIDY AF
🔥 1. Credit Where It’s Due, Mun
We put in the hours. In the pit. In the rain. Holding cameras while dodging elbows and flying pint cups.
So when one of our shots ends up on a band’s Insta story (or in a dodgy bootleg merch ad 😤) — we’d at least like a little “📷 @theriffreportuk” shout, diolch very much.
🧠 2. Brand Recognition, Baby
Seeing that little Riff Report logo in the corner of a killer live shot builds trust and familiarity.
People know it’s us. People know it slaps. People click for more.
🕶️ 3. Exclusives Deserve Protection
If we’ve been lucky enough to capture VIP sets, backstage chaos, or a surprise soundcheck singalong, watermarking helps keep it clear who got the goods.
❌ WHY WE’VE AVOIDED IT UNTIL NOW
🎨 1. It Can Ruin The Shot
We’re all about vibes, and there’s nothing worse than a massive, ugly watermark across someone’s face mid-stage dive.
Keep it classy, not clunky.
📱 2. Social Sharing Works Best Clean
Fans love resharing our pics — and when the photos are watermark-free, they’re more likely to spread like wildfire.
We’d rather get tagged and seen than hidden behind a massive copyright badge.
💀 3. We’re Not the Watermark Police
Let’s be honest. It’s the internet. If someone really wants to nick your pic, they’ll crop it, blur it, or repost it anyway.
We’re not trying to start a turf war over who owns the pixels.
🤖 ENTER: INSTAGRAM AI — THE PHOTO FLAGGING MENACE
Lately, Instagram’s “protective” AI has been treating our rock’n’roll photography like it’s NSFW chaos.
What used to be accepted as stage fashion is now being automatically flagged because someone dared wear a fishnet bodysuit or latex leggings.
It’s rock ‘n’ roll, not OnlyFans, butt!
And guess what?
If you watermark your image, AI sometimes leaves it alone.
Yeah… figure that one out.
We get it — there’s a balance to be struck between keeping platforms “safe” and letting people share their artistic expression. But when your frontwoman in a PVC catsuit at Bloodstock gets pulled down, and a lad eating a doner kebab in his pants at Glasto stays up? We were tamping.
🎯 OUR GAME PLAN GOING FORWARD
We’re not about to slap a massive “THE RIFF REPORT 2025™” over every inch of our photos — we’ve got better taste than that, mun.
Instead, here’s what we’re thinking:
⚙️ Tiered Watermark Strategy (sounds fancy, innit?)
- 🖼️ Blog Posts & Galleries:
Subtle watermark in the bottom corner. Enough to claim it, not enough to distract. - 📱 Instagram / Facebook / X (Twitter):
No watermark, but we’ll shout loud if we catch someone nicking our stuff.
(And we’ll make a meme about it.) - 🎟️ Exclusive or VIP Content:
Watermarked. Full stop. If we’ve been granted behind-the-scenes access or we’re showing something really rare, we’ll own it. - 👻 Stories & Reels:
Probably watermark-free. Let the vibes fly.
And if Instagram keeps messing with our stuff? We might just start posting our photo dumps on our own site first — no filters, no AI, just pure rock’n’roll filth 🤘
💬 WHAT DO YOU LOT THINK?
Do you like seeing watermarks? Hate ‘em? Would you rather get tagged or see a subtle brand on the photo?
Let us know — slide into our DMs or comment on our latest post. We’re a community, after all, and we want to keep sharing the music, the madness, and the moments without some robot slapping a “content violation” sticker on everything louder than a whisper.
📢 Final Words (shouted, not typed)
WE’RE NOT A BLOODY NUDITY ACCOUNT, INSTAGRAM. WE’RE JUST A ROCK BLOG.
If someone’s outfit is too metal for your algorithm — that’s a you problem.
In the meantime, we’ll keep snapping the chaos, sharing the beauty, and maybe adding a tiny Riff Report stamp to the corner.
Rock on, you beautiful mosh gremlins.
Diolch for being part of the madness 🤘🔥🎤
