They draw from metal’s trailblazers — giant riffs, soaring melodies, and expansive sonic architecture — then twist it through a modern progressive lens: polyrhythmic tension, emotional depth, and daring arrangements. It’s the kind of thing that makes you rethink what an orchestra and a metal band can be when they actually talk to each other.

There’s even a classical heart beating beneath the distortion — dramatic phrasing, melancholic swells, and cinematic colour that hint at 19th-century Romanticism, all fused with ethereal, atmospheric flair.

🖤 THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE WORLD

Oïkoumen was founded in 2017 by Elie Veux (guitar, composition) and Laura Mazard (vocals, lyrics). The lineup expanded in 2019 with Yaël Febvray on bass and synth programming, adding depth and texture to the sound. Julien Prost joined in 2023 as orchestral programmer and mixer, firmly anchoring the project’s cinematic vision. A brief drummer collaboration ran from 2023 to 2024, visible in the band’s recent evolution.

This isn’t a revolving-door project — it’s a carefully assembled machine.

💿 FROM EPIC BEGINNINGS TO RAW PROG REALITY

Their self-titled debut EP Oïkoumen dropped in 2020, rooted in classic symphonic metal territory: sweeping orchestras, thematic heft, and epic vibes.

The track “Deus Vult” got a second life in 2023 with a rearranged release, but the real shift came with the single “The Green Queen” and the build-up to the album Dystopia. Here, the band embraced a rawer, drier aesthetic — sharper, edgier, and more direct. The lyrics moved into explicit, socially engaged territory, and the orchestra turned from decoration into a serrated blade.

That’s where Oïkoumen really found its voice: emotional, rebellious, and unafraid.

🌱 LIGHT BREAKS THROUGH: WHAT’S NEXT?

Just when you think the darkness has fully set in, Oïkoumen twist again.

Their most recent singles “Impulse” and “Enchanted Worlds” bring a more positive charge, backed by larger, expansive orchestration. It’s a widening of the lens, not a retreat — growth, not compromise.
