Birmingham has never needed an excuse to celebrate heavy metal.

After all, this is the city that gave the world Black Sabbath, helped shape the sound of an entire genre and produced one of rock’s most unforgettable characters in Ozzy Osbourne.

But for Ozzy Day, Birmingham has gone one step further.

Standing proudly inside Birmingham New Street Station, the enormous mechanical Ozzy The Bull has received a makeover worthy of the Prince of Darkness himself — complete with a pair of Ozzy’s trademark round glasses.

And honestly, butt, it looks absolutely magnificent.

🕶️ Ozzy The Bull Channels the Prince of Darkness

The spectacular 33ft — or 10-metre — mechanical bull has become one of Birmingham’s most recognisable landmarks since making its thunderous debut during the opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Originally created as a centrepiece for the ceremony at Alexander Stadium, the bull quickly captured the imagination of the public.

It was dramatic, mechanical, proudly Brummie and just slightly terrifying.

In other words, it was always destined for heavy metal greatness.

Following a public vote in 2023, the bull was officially named Ozzy, honouring Birmingham’s most famous heavy metal son.

Now, as the city marks Ozzy Day and the first anniversary of Ozzy Osbourne’s death, the giant bull is proudly wearing the singer’s instantly recognisable circular glasses.

It is a simple addition, but one that completely transforms the already impressive sculpture into a towering tribute to the Prince of Darkness.

📸 Free Polaroid Photos with Ozzy

Fans visiting Birmingham New Street Station on Wednesday 22 July can also take home a special souvenir from the day.

Visitors will be able to pose alongside Ozzy The Bull and receive a complimentary Polaroid photograph during two sessions:

11am until 2pm

3pm until 6pm

Whether you are a lifelong Black Sabbath fanatic, a solo Ozzy devotee or simply passing through the station on your way to grab a Greggs, it is a brilliant opportunity to capture a unique memory.

And let’s be honest — there cannot be many cities where you can casually collect a free Polaroid beside a giant mechanical bull wearing Ozzy Osbourne glasses.

Only in Birmingham, mun.

🖤 Birmingham Remembers Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy The Bull’s makeover forms part of a much wider programme of events taking place across Birmingham for Ozzy Day.

The commemorations celebrate the life, music and extraordinary legacy of a man who helped change rock music forever.

As the unmistakable voice of Black Sabbath, Ozzy stood at the centre of the band’s groundbreaking early albums, including Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Master of Reality.

Those records introduced the world to a darker, heavier sound built around Tony Iommi’s crushing riffs, Geezer Butler’s ominous bass lines, Bill Ward’s thunderous drumming and Ozzy’s haunting vocals.

Heavy metal would never be the same again.

Ozzy later launched an enormously successful solo career, delivering anthems including Crazy Train, Mr Crowley, Bark at the Moon, No More Tears and Mama, I’m Coming Home.

Across several decades, he became more than a singer.

He became a symbol of heavy metal itself.

Wild, unpredictable, funny, vulnerable and completely unmistakable, Ozzy remained one of rock music’s most beloved figures.

🐂 From the Commonwealth Games to Heavy Metal History

When the mechanical bull first appeared at the Commonwealth Games ceremony, few could have predicted just how important it would become to Birmingham.

The enormous creation was originally connected to the city’s industrial history, representing the workers, factories and communities that helped build modern Birmingham.

However, once the Games ended, the public demanded that the bull be preserved.

It had already become part of the city.

Naming it Ozzy strengthened that connection even further, linking Birmingham’s industrial heritage with its enormous musical legacy.

Now permanently installed at New Street Station, the bull greets commuters, tourists and travelling metalheads every day.

For Ozzy Day, those glasses provide the perfect finishing touch.

🎸 A City Proud of Its Heavy Metal Roots

Birmingham’s connection with heavy metal runs deeper than plaques, statues and anniversary events.

The music was born from the city’s streets, factories, working-class communities and industrial landscape.

Black Sabbath did not sound like a band from California or London.

They sounded like Birmingham.

Their music was heavy, mechanical and atmospheric — almost like the city’s factories had picked up guitars and started writing riffs.

That legacy can still be heard in generations of bands around the world.

Ozzy never forgot where he came from, and Birmingham has never forgotten him.

The city-wide Ozzy Day celebrations are not simply about mourning an icon. They are about recognising his impact, celebrating his humour and keeping his music alive.

🤘 The Riff Report Verdict

There are plenty of ways to honour a rock legend.

You can unveil a plaque.

You can organise a concert.

You can paint a mural.

Or, apparently, you can put giant round glasses on a 33ft mechanical bull inside one of Britain’s busiest railway stations.

And you know what?

That feels absolutely perfect.

Ozzy The Bull’s makeover is funny, heartfelt and brilliantly Birmingham. It captures the affection that the city continues to hold for the Prince of Darkness while giving fans another reason to gather, share stories and celebrate his music.

So, if you are passing through Birmingham New Street today, keep an eye out for the enormous metal beast in the glasses.

Grab a Polaroid.

Raise the horns.

Blast some Sabbath through your headphones.

And remember the man who helped put Birmingham — and heavy metal — on the musical map.

Ozzy may be gone, but Birmingham will always belong to the Prince of Darkness. 🖤🤘🐂

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
