L7 have announced the return of former bassist Janis Tanaka following the heartbreaking death of longtime member Jennifer Finch, with the band preparing to hit the road for one final run later this year.
This one carries a lot of emotion.
Following the death of Jennifer Finch in July, L7 have confirmed that Janis Tanaka will return to the band on bass as they prepare for their upcoming Last Hurrah Tour 2026.
Tanaka previously played with L7 between 1999 and 2001, and the band have now welcomed her back into the fold for what promises to be an incredibly meaningful run of shows.
๐ค A Difficult New Chapter For L7
Jennifer Finch passed away on 18 July 2026 at the age of 59 following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Her death hit the rock and alternative community hard.
Finch wasnโt simply the bassist in L7.
She was a huge part of the bandโs identity, attitude and sound, helping shape the group during their rise through the alternative and grunge explosion of the late โ80s and โ90s.
Her fierce stage presence, personality and creativity made her one of the most recognisable figures in the band.
So replacing her was never going to feel straightforward.
And, frankly, it shouldnโt.

L7 revealed that Finch had given her blessing for Tanaka to step back into the role.
That detail makes the announcement particularly poignant.
Tanaka already has history with the band, having been part of L7 at the turn of the millennium, so she isnโt walking into unfamiliar territory.
This is somebody who knows the songs.
Knows the personalities.
Knows the chaos.
And, most importantly, already understands exactly what being part of L7 means.
The band made it clear they are delighted to have her back, while also acknowledging the enormous absence left by Jennifer.

The reaction from fans has been overwhelmingly supportive.
L7 later thanked their followers for the kindness shown towards Tanaka following the announcement, describing the period since Finchโs death as an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved with the band.
And that response matters.
Because this isnโt a standard line-up reshuffle.
It isnโt somebody leaving after a row about songwriting credits or whose turn it is to drive the van.
This is a band grieving one of their own while trying to find a way forward.

L7 are currently preparing to head out on what has been billed as The Last Hurrah Tour 2026.
The tour is set to begin in San Diego on 6 October before wrapping up in Los Angeles on 14 November.
Given everything the band have been through, those shows are likely to carry a very different atmosphere than originally expected.
Thereโll be celebration.
Thereโll be grief.
Thereโll be nostalgia.
And thereโll almost certainly be a lot of noise.
Exactly as Jennifer would probably have wanted.

Finchโs contribution to L7 stretches across some of the bandโs most important years.
She joined the group in the late 1980s and became an integral part of the line-up that helped establish L7 as one of the fiercest and most uncompromising bands to emerge from the American alternative scene.
Tracks such as Pretend Weโre Dead, Shitlist, Andres and Fuel My Fire helped build the bandโs reputation for combining punk attitude, grunge weight and absolutely zero interest in behaving nicely for anybody.
L7 were loud.
Political.
Funny.
Confrontational.
Messy.
Brilliant.
And Jennifer Finch was right there in the middle of it.
๐ Jenniferโs Story Will Continue
Before her death, Finch had also been working on a memoir documenting her life and career.
The book, titled Shooting Up And Making Out: A Memoir Of My Life In LA And L7, is expected to be released in January 2027.
It will offer fans another opportunity to hear Jenniferโs story in her own words and reflect on a life lived right in the middle of some of alternative rockโs most explosive years.
That project now carries even greater significance.
Because while the tours eventually end and the amps eventually go quiet, the stories remain.
๐ค L7 Have Never Done Things The Easy Way
L7 have spent decades refusing to fit comfortably into anybody elseโs expectations.
They emerged from Los Angeles in the 1980s, mixing punk, metal, alternative rock and grunge long before genres were being neatly boxed up for algorithms and playlists.
They toured relentlessly.
They smashed through stereotypes.
They took absolutely no nonsense.
And they became one of the most important all-female rock bands of their generation.
That rebellious spirit remains part of everything the band do.
Which is why continuing after Jenniferโs death was always going to require somebody who understood that history.
Bringing Janis Tanaka back feels like a way of moving forward without pretending the past never happened.

Thereโs no replacing Jennifer Finch.
And thankfully, this announcement doesnโt feel like anybody is trying to.
Janis Tanaka returning to L7 feels more like an old friend stepping back into the room during an incredibly difficult moment.
She knows the band.
She knows the music.
And crucially, she arrives with Jenniferโs blessing.
That makes this next chapter feel less like replacement and more like continuation.
The upcoming Last Hurrah shows are going to be emotional as hell.
But theyโre also going to be loud.
And if L7 have taught us anything over the years, itโs that sometimes the best way to deal with pain is to plug in, turn the amps up and make an almighty bloody racket.
