Results day can feel like the biggest gig of your life.
You’ve spent months revising, smashing through coursework, sitting exams, refreshing portals and convincing yourself you definitely failed that one question you actually answered perfectly.
Then the results land.
And sometimes…
They’re not what you hoped for. 😬
If that’s you today, don’t assume the entire show has been cancelled.
Whether you’re dealing with A-Level, T-Level or BTEC results, there are still plenty of routes forward. Reviews, appeals, resits, Clearing, alternative courses, apprenticeships and different career paths can all come into play.
So if results day has gone a bit sideways, here’s what to do next. 🤘🔥
😬 First Things First: Don’t Panic
Easier said than done, obviously.
When you see a grade you weren’t expecting, your brain can go from zero to complete catastrophe in about four seconds.
You start thinking:
“That’s university gone.”
“I’ve ruined everything.”
“What am I supposed to do now?”
Before you declare the tour officially cancelled, slow things down and check exactly where you stand.
Look carefully at your results.
Speak to your school, college or sixth form.
If you’ve applied to university, check the current status of your application.
You may find that things aren’t quite as bad as they first looked.
Universities can sometimes still accept students who have narrowly missed the grades listed in their original offer.
So before launching your phone into the nearest hedge, check the facts. 😂
🔎 Think Your Result Might Be Wrong?
Sometimes a grade just doesn’t look right.
Maybe you were consistently achieving much higher marks throughout the course.
Maybe one subject has come back completely differently from what you expected.
Maybe you walked out of the exam feeling reasonably confident and the result has left you staring at the screen like someone has just announced Nickelback as Download Festival’s secret death metal headliner.
If something looks seriously out of character, speak to your school or college.
They can explain what information is available and whether a review of marking or another post-results service might be appropriate.
Don’t rely on rumours from social media, your mate’s cousin or some bloke called Gaz who “knows how exam boards work”.
Get proper advice.
📝 What Is A Review Of Marking?
A review of marking is exactly what it sounds like.
It involves checking whether the marking of an assessment was carried out correctly under the relevant rules.
However, there’s one very important thing to understand:
Your mark can potentially go down as well as up.
Yep.
It isn’t a magical button labelled:
“PLEASE ADD THREE MARKS SO I CAN GET INTO UNI.”
That’s why you should discuss it with your teachers, tutors or exams officer before requesting anything.
They may be able to help you understand how close you were to a grade boundary and whether requesting a review is sensible.
There may also be fees and strict deadlines involved.
So if you’re considering one, don’t leave it sitting on the to-do list until next month.
⚠️ What About Appeals?
Reviews and appeals are not always the same thing.
An appeal generally involves challenging whether the correct procedures were followed, depending on the qualification and awarding organisation involved.
The exact process can vary.
That means the rules for an A-Level may not be identical to those for a BTEC or T-Level.
Your first move should be speaking to the school, college or organisation responsible for your qualification.
Ask them exactly:
What can be challenged?
Who submits the request?
What evidence is required?
What is the deadline?
Are there any costs?
Results day moves quickly, and deadlines matter.
🎓 Missed Your University Offer?
This is the one that causes serious panic.
You’ve pictured the course.
You’ve looked at accommodation.
You’ve stalked the campus on Google Maps.
You’ve already found the nearest Greggs.
Then your results arrive and you’ve missed the grades.
Before assuming it’s all over, check your application status.
A university may still accept you even if you didn’t hit every grade listed in the offer.
If they haven’t accepted you, you can then start looking at your other options.
And one of the biggest is…
🔥 Clearing
Clearing gets treated like some sort of emergency backup plan.
It really shouldn’t.
Thousands of students use it to find university places.
Some miss their original offer.
Some do better than expected.
Some change their minds.
Some realise the course they picked six months ago actually doesn’t appeal anymore.
Clearing can give you another opportunity to find somewhere that suits you.
The important thing is not to panic-pick the first available course because everyone around you is shouting.
Take a bit of time.
Research the course.
Research the university.
Think about the location.
Think about accommodation.
Think about whether you actually want to study that subject for several years.
A rushed decision because you’re stressed can become a very expensive mistake.
🔁 Can You Resit?
For some qualifications and subjects, resitting may be possible.
That could mean retaking an exam, an assessment or another part of the qualification.
The exact rules depend on what you studied and which awarding organisation is involved.
Speak to your school or college and ask:
- What can I resit?
- When would the resit happen?
- Would I need to retake the whole qualification?
- Are there any fees?
- Where would I sit the exam?
- How could it affect university applications?
Get a full picture before deciding.
🤔 Is A Resit The Right Choice?
This is where it becomes personal.
If you need a certain grade for a specific university course, apprenticeship or career path, resitting could be absolutely worth considering.
But if another route gets you where you want to go without spending another year chasing one grade, that deserves serious thought too.
There’s no prize for making life unnecessarily difficult just because Plan A looked tidy on paper.
Sometimes Plan B ends up being the better band on the bill.
🛣️ University Isn’t The Only Option
Results day coverage often makes it sound like there are only two possible endings:
University = success.
Anything else = game over.
Nonsense.
University can be brilliant.
So can apprenticeships.
So can further education.
So can training.
So can going straight into work.
So can taking time to work out what you actually want.
There isn’t one correct route through adulthood.
Some people know exactly what they want to do at 18.
Others are 35 and still thinking:
“Surely someone’s going to tell me what I’m supposed to be doing soon?”

💼 Apprenticeships Could Be Worth A Look
If your original plans have changed, this might be a good time to investigate apprenticeships.
They can offer practical experience, training and recognised qualifications while giving you a direct route into an industry.
Depending on your career goals, that hands-on experience can be massively valuable.
And if you discover you prefer that route to university?
That isn’t settling.
That’s making a decision that suits you.
❤️ Stop Comparing Yourself To Everyone Else
Results day social media can be absolute chaos.
You’ll see:
“THREE A*s!!!”
“OXFORD HERE I COME!!!”
“FULL MARKS!!!”
Brilliant.
Be happy for people.
But don’t turn someone else’s success into ammunition against yourself.
Their result has absolutely nothing to do with your value.
Everyone studies different subjects.
Everyone has different circumstances.
Everyone has different goals.
You’re not all heading to the same destination.
📞 Talk To Someone
If you’re confused, speak to people who actually know the system.
That might include:
Your school or college
Teachers, tutors and exams staff can help explain your results and what options are available.
Your university
If your place is affected, contact them where appropriate and find out exactly where you stand.
UCAS
Check your application status and official information about Clearing and university places.
Careers advisers
They can help you look at alternative courses, apprenticeships, training and jobs.
Family or someone you trust
Sometimes you just need someone else sitting beside you while you work through everything.
You don’t need to solve your entire future alone before lunchtime.
⏰ Deadlines Matter
If you’re thinking about requesting a review, submitting an appeal, changing university plans or arranging a resit, check the relevant deadlines immediately.
Do not think:
“I’ll sort it next week.”
Next week might be too late.
Write the dates down.
Put reminders in your phone.
Stick a note on the fridge.
Write it on your drummer’s forehead if necessary.

If you’re getting results in Wales, make sure the advice you’re following applies to your qualification and awarding organisation.
Processes can differ across the UK.
Your school, college and relevant awarding body should be your main sources of information if you’re considering reviews, appeals or resits.
Don’t assume advice written for another part of the UK automatically applies to you.
Check first.
Then act.
🎸 One Result Does Not Decide Your Entire Future
This is the biggest thing to remember.
A disappointing result can absolutely hurt.
Especially if you worked your arse off.
You’re allowed to be disappointed.
You’re allowed to be angry.
You’re allowed to sit there thinking:
“Well, this is rubbish.”
What you shouldn’t do is turn one setback into a prediction about the rest of your life.
There’s a massive difference between:
“This didn’t go to plan.”
and
“My future is ruined.”
Careers aren’t straight lines.
Life isn’t a festival timetable where everything happens exactly when it’s supposed to.
Sometimes the headliner pulls out.
Sometimes it rains for three days straight.
Sometimes your tent leaks.
Sometimes the band you only watched because nothing else was on becomes your favourite act of the weekend.
The route changes.
You adapt.
You keep moving.
