By The Riff Report Blog โ€” where we pour pints of truth, not corporate PR froth ๐Ÿค˜

๐Ÿ’ฅ The Punk That Changed Beer Forever

Back in 2007, two Scottish lads, James Watt and Martin Dickie, kicked down the doors of the beer world and shouted: โ€œWe are the revolution!โ€
BrewDog wasnโ€™t just a brewery โ€” it was an attitude, a middle finger to the bland lager overlords dominating UK pubs.

They made strong beer, used wild marketing stunts (taxidermy bottles, anyone?), and even got punks like us to buy into their โ€œEquity for Punksโ€ crowdfunding empire. Fans werenโ€™t just drinkers โ€” they were part of the movement. ๐Ÿป

By the late 2010s, BrewDog had bars in every big UK city, international outposts from Berlin to Brisbane, and more merch than Iron Maidenโ€™s tour stand. Their beer was everywhere โ€” Punk IPA, Hazy Jane, Dead Pony Club.
The world was frothing at the mouth for that BrewDog swagger.

But thenโ€ฆ the head went flat.

๐Ÿ’€ From Punk to Problem: Where It All Went Sideways

BrewDogโ€™s downfall wasnโ€™t one mistake โ€” it was a perfect storm of chaos, controversy, and capitalism.
Letโ€™s pour this mess pint by pint. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿบ 1. Overexpansion & Overspending

When BrewDog said they wanted to take over the world, they meant it โ€” but maybe they shouldโ€™ve read the bill first.

They opened too many bars, too quickly, in places that made accountants sweat: Londonโ€™s priciest postcodes, massive flagship bars, and ambitious international ventures that bled cash faster than a leaky keg.

Each new site came with sky-high rent, staffing, and energy costs. When the post-pandemic crunch hit and punters started staying home, those fancy glass palaces suddenly looked like millstones.

In 2025, BrewDog confirmed the closure of 10 bars, admitting some โ€œjust werenโ€™t viableโ€ anymore. Thatโ€™s corporate speak for: we went too big, too fast.

โšก 2. Inflation, Energy Costs & The Hospitality Apocalypse

Letโ€™s be fair โ€” BrewDog isnโ€™t alone in this one. The entire hospitality sector is struggling.
Energy prices? Up. Wages? Up. Beer duty? Up.
Customer spending? Down faster than your pint at last orders.

Even for a brand as loud as BrewDog, the economics didnโ€™t make sense anymore. You canโ€™t sell ยฃ6 IPAs when your punters are comparing them to Aldi craft cans for ยฃ1.20. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Watt himself admitted that โ€œskyrocketing costsโ€ and โ€œunprecedented pressuresโ€ made running certain bars โ€œimpossible.โ€

And if that wasnโ€™t enough, almost 2,000 UK pubs stopped stocking BrewDog beers altogether โ€” ouch. Thatโ€™s a proper kick in the hops.

๐Ÿ’ฃ 3. The Punk That Sold Out?

Ah, the irony. The brand that built itself on being anti-corporateโ€ฆ became exactly that.

BrewDogโ€™s image started to wobble when critics called out the company for hypocrisy โ€” from environmental virtue-signalling to toxic workplace culture allegations.
Former staff accused leadership of being โ€œa cult of personalityโ€ around James Watt, claiming burnout, pressure, and fear were part of the job description.

Suddenly, the punk spirit felt fake.
And when the โ€œcool kidsโ€ of craft beer think youโ€™ve gone corporate, youโ€™re done for.

Even their much-hyped โ€œLost Forestโ€ rewilding project in the Highlands โ€” meant to offset carbon and showcase green credentials โ€” was quietly sold off in 2025. ๐ŸŒฒ

The rebellion had lost its teeth.

โ˜ ๏ธ 4. Toxic Work Atmosphere & Bullying Allegations

If you thought the worst part was financial, think again.
In 2021 and beyond, dozens of former BrewDog employees came forward to lift the lid on what they described as a โ€œculture of fearโ€ inside the company.

A group calling themselves Punks With Purpose published an open letter signed by more than 60 ex-staff, accusing BrewDogโ€™s leadership of fostering a toxic environment, driven by โ€œfear, intimidation, and pressure.โ€
They claimed the relentless drive to be the biggest and boldest brewery came at the expense of staff wellbeing โ€” with burnout, bullying, and unrealistic expectations becoming the norm.

Workers said they were pushed to breaking point for the sake of โ€œgrowth at all costs.โ€
Others alleged managers prioritised โ€œPR stunts over people.โ€

The accusations painted a picture of a company that was loud about being punk, but quiet about protecting its own.

James Watt later addressed the complaints, admitting the company had made โ€œmistakesโ€ and promising to improve workplace culture.
But for many fans and ex-staff, the damage was done. The punk mask had slipped, revealing something that looked a lot like a corporate machine.

What started as a scrappy rebellion had turned into a cautionary tale about what happens when the underdog becomes the empire. ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’ท 5. Money Troubles Brewing Beneath the Surface

Behind the swagger, the books were bleeding.

In 2023, BrewDog reported a pre-tax loss of around ยฃ59 million, despite sales being up. Thatโ€™s like selling out a tour but still owing the venue money. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

With big loans, high rents, and bars underperforming, BrewDogโ€™s empire was turning into a very expensive hangover.
Investors started asking: โ€œWhereโ€™s the profit?โ€

The answer: down the drain with the excess IPA.

๐Ÿง  6. Strategy Drift & Leadership Chaos

Once upon a time, BrewDog had one mission โ€” stick it to the mainstream.
Now? Itโ€™s not clear what they stand for anymore.

Leadership changes, PR fires, rebrands, re-launches โ€” the company feels like itโ€™s having a midlife crisis in real time.

Even when they insist the bar closures are part of a โ€œstrategic review,โ€ itโ€™s hard not to see it as damage control.
The punk ship isnโ€™t sunk yet, but itโ€™s taking on water โ€” and the crew keeps arguing about which way to steer.

๐Ÿป Why The Bars Are Actually Closing

Zooming in, hereโ€™s the hard truth:
Most of these bars arenโ€™t closing because of a lack of hype โ€” theyโ€™re closing because the maths doesnโ€™t work anymore.

The causes:

  • Rent & rates that even rockstars couldnโ€™t afford ๐ŸŽธ
  • Staff & energy costs through the roof ๐Ÿ”ฅ
  • Fewer customers walking through the door ๐Ÿชซ
  • Some locations cannibalising each other โ€” too many bars chasing the same crowd ๐Ÿบ
  • And that PR baggage keeping some punters away ๐Ÿ˜ถ

BrewDog said it themselves: โ€œThese closures are about protecting the health of the overall business.โ€

Translation: Weโ€™re cutting off the limbs to save the torso.

๐Ÿงญ Is This The End, Or Just The Hangover?

Not quite the end โ€” more like a brutal wake-up call.
BrewDogโ€™s still brewing, still selling, and still shouting loud. But the shineโ€™s gone.

Theyโ€™re selling off side projects, tightening belts, and trying to rebuild trust. But whether the brand can ever feel punk again? Thatโ€™s another story.

The โ€œPunk IPAโ€ name once felt like a battle cry. Now it feels like a relic from when rebellion came in bottles, not spreadsheets.

๐ŸŽค Final Pour: Lessons from the BrewDog Saga

  1. Never believe your own hype.
  2. You canโ€™t scale rebellion without selling something out.
  3. And if your business model relies on vibes, make sure theyโ€™re not souring.

BrewDog changed the beer world โ€” no doubt about it. But somewhere between being punks and being millionaires, they lost the crowdโ€™s roar.

Still, credit where itโ€™s due: they made the world give a damn about craft beer. And for that, we raise a (reasonably priced) pint. ๐Ÿป
