No one quite knew what to expect. There were whispers: โA rock festival? In the Welsh Valleys? On top of a mountain? In July?โ
The answer came quick: โHell yeah, butt.โ
The inaugural Steelhouse was intimate, gritty, and glorious. The weather was unpredictable (of course), the mud was ankle-deep (obviously), but the vibe was electric, and the passion was unreal.
With a lineup that mixed local heroes and classic rock stalwarts, Steelhouse 2011 was less about spectacle and more about heart. And from the moment the first power chord rang out across the hills, we all knewโฆ
This was the start of something special.
๐ธ SATURDAY โ The First Riffs on the Ridge
Hand of Dimes โ
Nev MacDonald was there at the beginning โ a Welsh rock icon performing at the first-ever Steelhouse. With Hand of Dimes, he brought smooth, soulful vocals and bluesy power to the stage, backed by a band as tight as a bikerโs bandana.
Their set was full of warmth and grace. Jacobโs Ladder and Looking at You resonated across the hills like a prayer to the gods of rock. It was homegrown, heartfelt, and humble โ the kind of set that told the crowd: โSteelhouse is ours.โ
Heavenโs Basement ๐ฅ
Already infamous for their livewire performances, Heavenโs Basement hit the first Steelhouse like a firestorm. They didnโt just play โ they detonated. With soaring vocals, filthy riffs, and stage dives that defied gravity (and common sense), they turned the muddy slope into a mosh pit.
Executionerโs Day and Paranoia were highlights, but honestly โ the whole set felt like a bar fight with guitars. Young, hungry, and completely unhinged. Exactly what the first Steelhouse needed.
The Quireboys (Headliner) ๐ฉ
It had to be them. The pub rock legends whoโve always felt more like a party than a band. With Spike at the helm, drink in hand, grin on face, The Quireboys baptised Steelhouse Festival in swagger and soul.
7 OโClock, There She Goes Again, Mona Lisa Smiled โ every chorus was a singalong, every riff a warm hug. There were fans on shoulders, arms in the air, and pint glasses waving like flags. It wasnโt just a headline set โ it was a celebration.
When I Donโt Love You Anymore rang out, you could feel the emotion โ not just for the song, but for the moment. We were all part of history.
๐ Final Thoughts โ Steelhouse 2011: Where It All Began
Steelhouse 2011 was small, yes.
Rough around the edges, absolutely.
But what it lacked in polish, it made up for in passion, purpose, and pure rock โnโ roll love.
๐ธ It was muddy.
๐ฅ It was loud.
๐ And it was perfectly, proudly, Welsh.
From that tiny first gathering on the hill grew something massive. Year after year, the stage got bigger, the crowds got louder, the legends came calling โ but Steelhouse never forgot its roots.
2011 wasnโt just the beginning. It was a statement:
โWe donโt need fancy. We need LOUD. We need FAMILY. We need THE MOUNTAIN.โ
Cโmon Wales! Iechyd da to where it all began โ and to everything that followed.
