Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell has revealed the heartbreaking news that his cancer has returned, despite undergoing a donor bone marrow transplant that had previously left him in complete remission.

The Northern Irish guitar legend, who has been battling Hodgkin lymphoma since 2013, has spent more than a decade undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy and stem-cell treatments while continuing to make music and, whenever possible, get back on stage.

Now Campbell faces another chapter in that battle.

But rather than allowing fear to dictate what comes next, the guitarist has shared a powerful message for anyone who receives the words nobody ever wants to hear:

“If you are unfortunate enough to get a cancer diagnosis — overcome the fear.”

It is a message coming from someone who knows exactly what that fear feels like.

🎸 More Than A Decade Fighting Cancer

Campbell was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013.

What followed has been an extraordinary medical journey running alongside one hell of a rock ’n’ roll career.

Campbell underwent chemotherapy before later receiving an autologous stem-cell transplant, a procedure using his own stem cells. Unfortunately, the disease subsequently returned.

Over the years he underwent further treatments, including immunotherapy, while refusing to allow cancer to completely take control of his life.

Music became more than a career.

It became part of the fight.

Campbell has previously spoken about his determination to continue performing even during some of the toughest periods of treatment. While stepping away from touring might have seemed like the obvious choice, playing guitar and being on stage gave him something enormously important to focus on.

That stubborn determination has become part of Campbell’s cancer story.

Cancer could mess with his body.

It wasn’t getting the bloody guitar.

❤️ The Donor Transplant That Brought Incredible Hope

Eventually Campbell’s doctors recommended a donor transplant as potentially his best opportunity for a cure.

The road towards that procedure wasn’t straightforward.

After undergoing intensive chemotherapy in preparation, Campbell revealed that his intended donor became unavailable shortly before the planned transplant.

Thankfully, another donor was found — reportedly a 21-year-old man who was a perfect 10-out-of-10 genetic match.

Campbell entered hospital around New Year’s Eve and underwent the transplant.

Then came the news everyone had desperately hoped for.

A PET scan in April 2025 showed Campbell was completely in remission for the first time since his original diagnosis.

After more than a decade fighting Hodgkin lymphoma, it appeared that the transplant had finally delivered the breakthrough.

Campbell understandably described himself as overjoyed.

And rock fans everywhere celebrated with him.

💔 Now The Cancer Has Returned

Sadly, that period of remission has not lasted.

Campbell has now revealed that his cancer has returned, approximately 18 months after undergoing the donor transplant.

He is continuing treatment to manage the disease and has indicated that another transplant may be required, meaning doctors could once again need to find a suitable donor.

It’s a crushing development after everything Campbell has already endured.

Yet his attitude remains remarkably defiant.

Rather than hiding away from the subject, Campbell continues to speak openly about cancer, treatment and the psychological battle that comes alongside the physical one.

And his advice centres on one enormous enemy:

Fear.

🗣️ “Overcome The Fear”

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can instantly transform someone’s world.

Campbell knows that better than most.

But after living with the disease for more than a decade, undergoing numerous treatments and continuing to perform on some of the world’s biggest stages, his message is about refusing to allow the diagnosis to become your entire identity.

“If you are unfortunate enough to get a cancer diagnosis — overcome the fear.”

That’s easier said than done, obviously.

But Campbell isn’t speaking from the sidelines.

He’s speaking after years of hospital appointments, chemotherapy, scans, setbacks, remission and recurrence.

His philosophy throughout much of his battle has seemingly remained the same:

Keep living.

Keep playing.

Keep looking forward.

Keep plugging the bloody Les Paul in. 🤘

🎶 Music Has Remained Part Of The Fight

Campbell’s determination to continue working throughout his illness has been extraordinary.

Even while receiving serious treatment, he has repeatedly returned to the stage with Def Leppard.

Following his donor transplant, Campbell made an emotional return to performing with the band in May 2025 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

For many musicians, returning to the stage after something so physically demanding would have represented a massive achievement in itself.

For Campbell, it seemed almost inevitable.

This is a bloke who has spent virtually his entire adult life with a guitar strapped around him.

Music isn’t merely what he does.

It’s who he is.

🔥 From Dio To Def Leppard – One Hell Of A Career

Long before this battle began, Vivian Campbell had already carved his name into heavy metal history.

Born in Northern Ireland, Campbell emerged through the Belfast metal scene with Sweet Savage before receiving the opportunity that would transform his career.

He joined Dio, appearing on the monumental 1983 album Holy Diver.

And let’s be fair, mun — that’s one hell of an entry on the CV.

Campbell’s guitar work helped power songs including “Holy Diver”, “Rainbow in the Dark” and “Stand Up and Shout”, with the album becoming one of heavy metal’s defining releases.

He subsequently played with Whitesnake, Riverdogs and other projects before joining Def Leppard in 1992, filling the position left following the tragic death of Steve Clark.

His first major appearance with Def Leppard came at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium.

Not exactly easing yourself into the new job, is it?

Since then Campbell has become an integral part of the Def Leppard family alongside Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rick Savage and Rick Allen.

More than three decades later, he’s still there.

Still playing.

Still fighting.

🤘 The Rock Community Is Behind You, Viv

There isn’t really a clever punchline for news like this.

Cancer is brutal.

Campbell has already fought this disease for more than a decade, and hearing that it has returned following such encouraging news about his transplant is genuinely heartbreaking.

But if his previous battles have demonstrated anything, it’s that Vivian Campbell possesses an astonishing amount of resilience.

From chemotherapy wards to stadium stages, he’s repeatedly refused to let cancer write the final chapter.

So from everyone here at The Riff Report, we’re sending all our love and best wishes to Vivian, his family, his bandmates and everyone supporting him through the next stage of treatment.

The amps are still humming.

The guitar is still plugged in.

And the fight continues.

Give it hell, Viv. 🤘❤️
