Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora has paid a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton, remembering the country music legend as his “friend and shero” and declaring that her spirit and music will live on forever.

There are musicians who become stars, there are musicians who become legends… and then there are those very rare people who become part of the fabric of popular culture itself.

Dolly Parton was one of them. 🌹

And as tributes continue to pour in from across the entertainment world, Richie Sambora has shared his own emotional farewell to a woman who wasn’t simply somebody he admired from afar — she was a friend.

The legendary former Bon Jovi guitarist described Dolly as his “friend and shero”, adding the beautiful words:

“She will live on in our hearts forever.”

Short, simple and absolutely loaded with emotion. 💔

🤠🎸 When Dolly Met Rock ’n’ Roll

While Dolly Parton will forever be one of country music’s greatest icons, her influence stretched miles beyond Nashville.

Rock musicians bloody loved her.

And Richie Sambora was very much among them.

Their friendship also produced one of those wonderfully unexpected musical combinations that somehow made perfect sense — Dolly Parton and the bloke responsible for some of Bon Jovi’s biggest guitar moments.

Now that’s a collaboration.

Sambora memorably joined Dolly during her enormous Glastonbury Festival appearance in 2014, when she took over the Pyramid Stage for what became one of the most talked-about performances of the weekend.

Picture it.

Glastonbury.

Thousands upon thousands of people.

Dolly Parton.

Richie Sambora.

Absolute scenes, mun. 🤘😂

🔥 Sambora Also Joined Dolly’s Rockstar Adventure

Their musical connection didn’t stop there.

When Dolly finally decided to properly unleash her inner rock star with her huge 2023 album Rockstar, Sambora was among the musicians who helped bring the project to life.

He contributed guitar to the album’s title track, “Rockstar”.

The record represented Dolly throwing herself headfirst into the world of rock following her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — something she initially felt she hadn’t earned because she considered herself primarily a country artist.

So what did Dolly do?

She essentially went:

“Right then… better make a massive rock album.”

😂🤘

And she absolutely went for it.

The sprawling record featured an outrageous collection of rock royalty and famous collaborators, proving once again that Dolly’s influence wasn’t confined to a single genre.

Country, pop, rock — it didn’t really matter.

Everybody loved Dolly.

🌹 “Friend and Shero”

That’s what makes Sambora’s tribute particularly touching.

Calling somebody a “shero” tells you everything about the level of admiration involved.

This wasn’t simply one famous musician acknowledging another.

It was one artist remembering somebody who had inspired him, worked alongside him and become his friend.

And across generations of musicians, those stories are likely to keep coming.

Because Dolly wasn’t simply responsible for a collection of massive songs.

She connected with people.

🎶 A Songbook That Will Never Disappear

Think about the songs for a moment.

“Jolene.”

“9 to 5.”

“Coat of Many Colors.”

“I Will Always Love You.”

Songs that have travelled across generations, genres and continents.

Some artists have hits.

Dolly had songs that became part of people’s lives.

And perhaps that’s exactly what Sambora meant when he said she would “live on in our hearts forever.”

Because musicians don’t completely disappear when they’ve left behind music like that.

Every time somebody sticks Jolene on.

Every time a pub full of people belts out 9 to 5.

Every time another young musician discovers Dolly’s songwriting.

Every time one of her songs gets covered, reimagined or passed down to another generation…

She’s still there.

🤘 Dolly Was Always Welcome in the Rock World

Here at The Riff Report, we’re obviously usually found lurking around distorted guitars, festival fields, sweaty venues and pits full of people who’ve somehow lost one shoe.

But Dolly always belonged in our world too.

Rock isn’t just about guitar distortion.

It’s attitude.

It’s authenticity.

It’s refusing to let somebody else tell you who you’re supposed to be.

And Dolly Parton had that in absolute bucketloads.

She built a career on doing things her way, while maintaining the humour, kindness and personality that made millions of people feel like they knew her.

That’s pretty damn rock ’n’ roll if you ask us. 🤘

💔 Goodbye to a True Original

Richie Sambora’s words join an enormous wave of love for one of music’s most recognisable and treasured figures.

But his tribute perhaps captures the feeling better than any enormous speech could.

Friend.

Shero.

Forever in our hearts.

Three sentiments that say everything.

Dolly Parton’s music will continue playing.

Her influence will continue spreading.

Her songs will continue being sung.

And somewhere, you just know somebody is currently picking up a guitar and learning Jolene for the very first time.

That’s how legends live forever.

Rest easy, Dolly. 🌹🎸

From Nashville to Glastonbury and every stage, radio, jukebox and battered old record player in between…

Thank you for the songs.
