The White Stripes famously put their own raw, blues-soaked stamp on the country classic back in 2000 — and now Jack White has returned to the song for an emotional tribute to Dolly Parton.

There are covers… and then there are songs that become so closely associated with another artist that they almost develop a second life entirely.

For Jack White, Dolly Parton’s legendary “Jolene” is very much one of those songs.

The former White Stripes frontman delivered an emotional rendition of the country classic during a performance at London’s Eventim Apollo, paying tribute to Dolly and revisiting a track that has been intertwined with his own musical story for more than 25 years.

And mun, this wasn’t just another cover pulled out of the back catalogue.

This one meant something. 🖤

🎤 Jack White Brings ‘Jolene’ Back to London

White’s performance stripped everything back to what has always made his interpretation of “Jolene” so bloody powerful — raw emotion, huge vocals and that unmistakable blues-rock intensity.

Where Dolly Parton’s original carries its desperation with country elegance, Jack White has always attacked the song like someone desperately trying to hold themselves together while everything collapses around them.

That contrast is exactly why The White Stripes’ version became so beloved.

During the emotional London performance, White reportedly ended the song by gesturing towards the sky and making the sign of the cross.

No massive speech required.

Sometimes the song says everything.

🖤 A Tribute With Decades of History Behind It

What makes Jack White performing “Jolene” particularly poignant is the history connecting him with the song.

The White Stripes recorded their version during the band’s early years, releasing it as the B-side to “Hello Operator” in 2000.

And somehow, taking one of country music’s most recognisable songs and throwing it into the wonderfully battered garage-rock machine of The White Stripes worked beautifully.

The arrangement transformed “Jolene” into something darker, rougher and increasingly desperate.

Jack’s voice cracks, climbs and practically pleads its way through the lyrics while the minimalist instrumentation gives the whole thing room to breathe.

It shouldn’t necessarily have worked.

It absolutely bloody did.

🔥 That was The White Stripes all over.

🎸 The White Stripes Made ‘Jolene’ Their Own

The song eventually became a fan favourite during The White Stripes’ live shows.

One particularly famous performance was captured at the band’s Blackpool Lights concert in 2004, helping introduce their version to an even wider rock audience.

For plenty of rock fans, that performance became the Jack White rendition of “Jolene”.

No elaborate stage production.

No army of musicians.

Just a bloke, a guitar and enough emotional intensity to knock the wallpaper off the venue walls.

Proper job. 🤘

The White Stripes’ version demonstrated something that Dolly Parton’s songwriting had already proved countless times:

A genuinely brilliant song doesn’t belong to one genre.

Country.

Rock.

Blues.

Metal.

Pop.

Strip away the labels and you’re left with storytelling, melody and emotion.

And “Jolene” has all three by the truckload.

❤️ Dolly Loved The White Stripes’ Version Too

Perhaps the loveliest part of the story is that Dolly Parton herself appreciated what The White Stripes had done with her song.

Rather than treating their radically different interpretation as sacrilege, Dolly praised the band’s version over the years.

That’s hardly surprising when you consider Dolly’s enormous appreciation for musicians from across the musical spectrum.

Her influence stretched far beyond Nashville.

Rock musicians loved her.

Metal musicians loved her.

Pop stars loved her.

Punk musicians loved her.

And pretty much everyone who encountered Dolly seemed to come away with another story about her kindness, humour or ridiculous level of musical talent.

She wasn’t simply a country star.

Dolly Parton was music royalty.

🎶 The Genius of ‘Jolene’

Released in 1973, “Jolene” would become one of Dolly Parton’s defining recordings.

And its premise is beautifully simple.

A woman pleads with another woman not to take away the person she loves.

That’s basically it.

But the vulnerability within the song transformed that simple idea into something universal.

There’s no macho posturing.

No revenge fantasy.

No massive dramatic twist.

Just fear.

Jealousy.

Love.

And desperation.

It’s precisely those qualities that make Jack White’s interpretation work so brilliantly.

When White sings it, “Jolene” doesn’t sound like someone calmly explaining their situation.

It sounds like somebody hanging onto the edge of a cliff by three fingers.

🤘 Dolly Parton and the Rock World

Dolly’s connection with rock music became even stronger later in her career.

Her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ultimately inspired her to embrace the genre head-on with the enormous Rockstar album in 2023.

The record saw Dolly tackling rock classics and collaborating with an absolutely ridiculous collection of musical legends.

But the truth is, Dolly didn’t suddenly become accepted by rock fans because she made a rock album.

We’d already claimed her years ago.

Rock music has always had room for great characters, rebels and storytellers.

Dolly Parton was all three.

She wrote songs on her own terms.

Controlled her career.

Refused to let the industry define her.

Supported countless charitable causes.

And built a musical legacy stretching across generations.

Sounds pretty rock ’n’ roll to us, butt. 🤘

🖤 One Song, Two Musical Worlds

That’s why seeing Jack White return to “Jolene” carries so much weight.

It connects two artists who, on paper, came from completely different musical universes.

One became an icon of Nashville.

The other emerged from Detroit playing stripped-down garage blues in a red-and-white duo.

Yet somewhere in the middle sits one incredible song.

“Jolene.”

A song written decades before The White Stripes existed, reinvented by Jack and Meg White in 2000 and carried into a completely different generation of music fans.

More than 25 years later, Jack White returning to it as a tribute feels like that musical circle closing.

🎸 The Riff Report Says…

Some tribute performances don’t need fireworks, giant video screens or ten-minute speeches.

Sometimes you just play the song.

Jack White’s relationship with “Jolene” stretches back to the earliest days of The White Stripes, and hearing him return to Dolly Parton’s masterpiece in London carried decades of musical history with it.

It reminded us why Dolly’s songs travelled so far beyond country music in the first place.

Great songwriting doesn’t care what section of the record shop you put it in.

And “Jolene” remains one of the greatest songs ever written.

From Nashville to Detroit.

From Dolly Parton to The White Stripes.

From a little B-side released in 2000 to an emotional London performance more than a quarter of a century later.

The song keeps going.

And somewhere, we’d like to think Dolly was listening. 🖤🎸

Rest easy, Dolly.

The rock world loved you too. 🤘🖤
