MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has weighed in on one of heavy metal’s favourite never-ending arguments — which bands deserve to make up a new “Big Four” of thrash — naming TESTAMENT, EXODUS and OVERKILL among his strongest contenders, while also throwing TRIVIUM into the conversation.
Right then.
Move the pints.
Clear the table.
Somebody lock the comments section.
Because Dave Mustaine has just handed metal fans another argument capable of lasting several decades.
The original Big Four — METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX — have become permanently embedded in thrash-metal history.
But what if you built another one?
Which bands would deserve those four sacred spots?
Mustaine has now offered his own thoughts, and three of his choices will probably have most old-school thrash fans nodding immediately.
The fourth?
Oh, that’s where things get spicy.
🔥 TESTAMENT
Let’s start with perhaps the least controversial choice.
TESTAMENT.
If there’s a band that has spent decades standing directly outside the traditional Big Four conversation yelling, “HELLO, WE’RE RIGHT HERE,” it’s TESTAMENT.
Formed in the Bay Area thrash scene that also produced METALLICA, EXODUS and DEATH ANGEL, TESTAMENT built one hell of a catalogue.
The Legacy.
The New Order.
Practice What You Preach.
Souls Of Black.
And unlike plenty of bands who peaked during thrash’s original explosion, TESTAMENT continued producing serious records decades later.
Chuck Billy still sounds enormous.
Eric Peterson remains a riff machine.
And Alex Skolnick continues casually reminding everybody why guitar magazines have been drooling over his playing since the ’80s.
Putting TESTAMENT into a second Big Four feels almost mandatory.

Mustaine’s admiration for TESTAMENT makes even more sense when you look at the guitar department.
Eric Peterson brings that crushing rhythm attack.
Alex Skolnick brings melody, technique and a lead style that can sound beautifully controlled one second and completely savage the next.
Together?
Filthy.
Thrash has always been a guitar-driven genre, and TESTAMENT possess one of the strongest six-string partnerships to emerge from the scene.
Throw Chuck Billy over the top and you’ve got a band capable of flattening festival stages forty years into the game.
💀 EXODUS
Then there’s EXODUS.
This one should require absolutely no explanation.
EXODUS were there when Bay Area thrash was still becoming a thing.
We’re talking early tapes.
Small clubs.
Denim.
Leather.
Beer.
And riffs played at speeds guaranteed to frighten sensible people.
Their debut album Bonded By Blood remains one of thrash metal’s defining records.
Fast.
Violent.
Chaotic.
And packed with riffs that still sound dangerous today.
If you’re creating another Big Four based on influence?
EXODUS walk straight through the door.
🔥 Gary Holt Has Carried The Thrash Flag For Decades
Then you’ve got Gary Holt.
One of the genre’s great riff writers.
Holt has kept EXODUS alive through lineup changes, musical trends and periods when mainstream interest in thrash wasn’t exactly booming.
And then, of course, he stepped into SLAYER following Jeff Hanneman’s illness and subsequent death, remaining with the band until their initial farewell.
So Holt’s place in thrash history is already pretty bloody secure.
Leaving EXODUS out of a second Big Four would probably cause half the Bay Area to riot.
⚡ OVERKILL
Mustaine’s third major choice?
OVERKILL.
And fair play.
The East Coast deserves some love too.
While California gets enormous attention in thrash discussions, OVERKILL were busy building their own nasty little corner of the genre in New Jersey.
And the remarkable thing?
They basically never stopped.
Albums.
Tours.
More albums.
More tours.
While entire metal trends appeared, exploded and disappeared, OVERKILL just kept turning up with another record full of riffs.
💚 Bobby Blitz And D.D. Verni Keep The Machine Moving
Frontman Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni have remained central to OVERKILL for decades.
And that catalogue is no joke.
Feel The Fire.
Taking Over.
The Years Of Decay.
Horrorscope.
That’s serious thrash history.
OVERKILL might never have reached METALLICA-sized commercial heights, but influence and longevity?
They’ve got both by the truckload.
There’s something beautifully stubborn about them.
Music changes?
OVERKILL continue.
Record industry collapses?
OVERKILL continue.
Everybody discovers nu-metal?
OVERKILL continue.
Thrash revival?
They were already there.
🤔 Then Mustaine Mentioned TRIVIUM
And here we go.
TRIVIUM.
Cue twelve thousand metalheads immediately opening a keyboard.
Mustaine floated the Florida band as another possibility, although even he acknowledged the obvious issue:
TRIVIUM aren’t strictly a traditional thrash-metal band.
They’ve used thrash heavily throughout their career, absolutely.
But they’ve also incorporated:
Metalcore.
Melodic death metal.
Progressive metal.
Classic heavy metal.
And plenty of other influences.
So if we’re building a strict second Big Four of old-school thrash?
TRIVIUM are definitely the wildcard.
🔥 But TRIVIUM Helped Carry Thrash Into Another Generation
There is an argument for them.
A strong one.
When Ascendancy exploded in 2005, TRIVIUM became one of the biggest new heavy bands of their generation.
Then came The Crusade, which leaned far harder into classic thrash and traditional heavy-metal influences.
Suddenly younger fans who’d entered heavy music through metalcore were hearing riffs deeply indebted to METALLICA, MEGADETH and the wider thrash scene.
Over the years, Matt Heafy, Corey Beaulieu and Paolo Gregoletto have continued bringing those influences into modern metal.
So are TRIVIUM purely thrash?
No.
Have they helped keep thrash DNA alive for a younger audience?
Absolutely.
🧨 But Who Else Could Take That Fourth Slot?
And this is where the debate becomes properly dangerous.
If you lock in:
TESTAMENT
EXODUS
OVERKILL
Who gets number four?
You could make a serious case for DEATH ANGEL.
Another Bay Area institution with a formidable catalogue and decades of credibility.
What about SACRED REICH?
Or NUCLEAR ASSAULT?
And then the whole argument becomes international.
Because once you leave America…
Oh dear.
🇩🇪 KREATOR Enter The Chat
If nationality doesn’t matter, KREATOR become very difficult to ignore.
The German titans have been one of thrash metal’s most important bands for decades.
Then you’ve got:
SODOM.
DESTRUCTION.
TANKARD.
Germany already has its own unofficial Teutonic Big Four, and every one of those bands brings serious history.
Suddenly our four-band list needs about fourteen slots.
Typical metal fans.
Give us four chairs and we’ll demand another table.
🇧🇷 What About SEPULTURA?
Then there’s SEPULTURA.
Their early records were absolutely rooted in thrash and death metal, and their influence became enormous worldwide.
Beneath The Remains.
Arise.
Chaos A.D.
You could make a very strong argument that SEPULTURA belong in any wider conversation about thrash’s most important bands outside the original four.
So now we’ve got another problem.
We haven’t even finished arguing about TRIVIUM and Brazil has arrived.
Brilliant.
🤘 Why The Original Big Four Became The Big Four
It’s also worth remembering what the “Big Four” term actually represented.
METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX weren’t necessarily declared the four best thrash bands by some sacred metal council.
They were four of the genre’s biggest and most commercially successful American acts.
Over time, the nickname became legendary.
Then the bands actually played the famous Big Four concerts together, cementing the whole idea permanently into metal history.
That doesn’t mean TESTAMENT or EXODUS somehow mattered less.
History just worked out differently.
🎸 TESTAMENT Probably Get The Least Arguments
If there’s one band on Mustaine’s list likely to generate almost universal agreement, it’s TESTAMENT.
They’ve spent decades being described as the band that could have been included.
The records were there.
The musicianship was there.
The fanbase was there.
And they remain dangerous live.
Stick TESTAMENT onto a new Big Four bill and most people probably just say:
“Yep.”
Then immediately start arguing over the other three.
💀 EXODUS’ Influence Is Impossible To Ignore
EXODUS also prove why sales figures don’t tell the whole story.
They helped create Bay Area thrash itself.
Their early lineup famously included Kirk Hammett before he joined METALLICA.
Their debut became a genre classic.
And Gary Holt turned into one of thrash metal’s defining guitarists.
You cannot tell the story of American thrash properly without EXODUS.
That’s bigger than chart positions.
⚡ OVERKILL Deserve More Credit
OVERKILL might be Mustaine’s most satisfying choice simply because they sometimes get overlooked in conversations dominated by California.
But New York and New Jersey had their own vicious heavy-music culture.
OVERKILL were right there.
They helped establish East Coast thrash and somehow retained that relentless attitude for decades.
Bobby Blitz still sounds like somebody has just told him screaming is banned.
Good luck enforcing that.
🔥 Could Somebody Actually Book This Tour?
Right.
Enough theory.
Here’s what we really want.
TESTAMENT.
EXODUS.
OVERKILL.
Plus whichever band wins the argument for fourth place.
One tour.
No nonsense.
Just several hours of thrash metal and thousands of middle-aged people discovering that their knees absolutely do not work like they did in 1989.
Would we go?
Obviously.
Would our neck survive?
Different question.
🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Dave Mustaine has opened an absolutely magnificent can of worms.
And we thank him for it.
TESTAMENT?
Easy yes.
EXODUS?
Easy yes.
OVERKILL?
Absolutely.
TRIVIUM?
That’s where the conversation becomes interesting.
If the idea is a strict second Big Four based on classic thrash lineage, there are other names with stronger claims.
If the point is recognising a band that carried thrash influence into another generation of metal?
TRIVIUM make plenty of sense.
And that’s why this debate will never be settled.
Thrash metal simply produced too many bloody good bands.
So Mustaine has given us three fairly safe picks and one glorious argument starter.
