A love letter to the loudest, muddiest, most dedicated maniacs this side of the Valleys ๐๏ธ๐ค
Only on The Riff Report, where the riffs are heavy and the fans are heavier.
๐๏ธ WELCOME TO THE MOUNTAIN FAITHFUL
Some festivals have fairweather fans. Steelhouse has lifers.
They come year after year, in sun, sleet, and sideways sheep, armed with camping chairs, bandanas, and more worn-out W.A.S.P. shirts than should legally be allowed.
These arenโt just attendees. These are the Superfans of Steelhouse โ the loudest voices in the pit, the first ones to arrive, and the last ones to leave (usually still shouting โENCORE!โ at a cow).
Letโs meet the mountain legends. ๐ธ
๐ CHAPTER 1: TATTOOS THAT SCREAM โSTEELHOUSE 4 LIFEโ
You know itโs love when someone inks it onto their body.
Real Steelhouse tattoos spotted in the wild:
- A full backpiece of the Mountain Stage (complete with lightning bolt)
- A sleeve dedicated to every band played since 2011 (yes, including The Answer)
- The Steelhouse logo inked over a heart โ literally and emotionally ๐ค
- โMud, Riffs & Mayhem โ Steelhouse 2013 Survivorโ on a left calf (rumoured to still ache when it rains)
โItโs not just a festival. Itโs who I am now.โ โ Dave from Aberdare, with a Saxon tattoo and the receipts to prove it
๐๏ธ CHAPTER 2: THE TENT SHRINES OF GLORY
These superfans donโt just camp โ they build shrines to rock ‘n’ roll in tent form. Their pitches are more decorated than a pub at Christmas. Weโre talking:
- Flags of all nations (mostly Wales and Dio)
- Custom signs like โCamp Diohardโ, โHouse of Hairโ, and โWomb of Doomโ ๐ค
- Fairy lights in the shape of guitars
- Garden gnomes holding tiny Flying Vs
- Entire gazebo setups dedicated to AC/DC or Def Leppard (with themed drinks menus โ โPour Some Rum On Meโ, anyone?)
โWe bring more gear to Steelhouse than we do on holiday. Priorities, innit.โ โ Lou & Em, veterans of 11 years, queen of tarp feng shui
๐ฅพ CHAPTER 3: THE 10-YEAR VETERANS โ THE MOUNTAIN DIEHARDS
If youโve survived ten Steelhouse festivals, youโve:
- Seen four seasons in one set
- Woken up in a tent that no longer exists
- Used duct tape to fix at least one friend
- Fallen in love with a band you didnโt know existed
- Called a stranger โbuttโ and meant it from the heart
These legends:
- Know where to pitch to avoid the swamp (spoiler: nowhere)
- Can navigate to the Mountain Stage blindfolded (some have)
- Still wear their first ever wristband with pride
- Remember the Great Curry Van Disaster of 2015
- Think โVIP Barโ just means โVery Important Piss Stopโ
โIโve been to Download, Iโve been to Reading, but only Steelhouse feels like coming home.โ โ Gaz, Year 12, has never missed one
๐ชฉ CHAPTER 4: FANCY DRESS, MOUNTAIN STYLE
Every year, someone ups the fancy dress game and becomes a living Steelhouse legend. Some of our favourites:
- The full Kiss lookalike group (who still managed to cook bacon mid-mosh)
- Viking tent crew complete with horned helmets and actual longboat (made of cardboard. Still counts.)
- Elvis impersonator who did a stage dive in blue suede wellies ๐
- That one guy who dressed as the Steelhouse Portaloo (why. just why.)
โYouโve not lived until youโve seen a crowd of pirates headbanging to Airbourne.โ โ Festival photographer, probably crying
๐ธ CHAPTER 5: FAN TRADITIONS, RITUALS & CHAOS
Every superfan has their Steelhouse traditions. Some are wholesome. Some are questionable. All are legendary.
๐ฅ Classic Superfan Rituals:
- โFirst Beer on the Hillโ selfie โ always done, no matter how much rain
- Shouting โTIDY!โ every time the lights go up ๐
- Hosting unofficial quizzes in the tent rows (prizes include warm Carlsberg and high-fives)
- Creating unofficial merch (yes, weโve seen the “I Got Muddy @ Steelhouse” knickers)
And donโt forget:
- Mountain Marriage Proposals ๐ (real ones!)
- Annual air guitar contest behind the food trucks
- That one time someone crowd-surfed on a tent door
๐ผ๏ธ CHAPTER 6: STEELHOUSE FAN WALL OF FAME
Itโs time we honoured the fans whoโve become part of the fabric:
- Janet from Cwmbran โ painted Steelhouse setlists on her campervan doors
- Lee & Donna โ renew their vows every year at the merch tent
- The โPint-By-Pint Walkersโ โ they walk up the mountain only drinking pints. No water. No regrets.
- Little Meg, age 8 โ knows more Black Stone Cherry lyrics than most adults. Her air-drumming at the barrier was chefโs kiss ๐ง๐ฅ
โSteelhouse is where we met, where we mosh, and where weโll probably be buried โ if the bogs donโt get us first.โ โ Long-time couple, happily engaged under the mountain stars
๐ FINALE: THEY ARE THE SPIRIT OF STEELHOUSE
The bands are loud.
The crew are legends.
But the superfans?
They are the soul of the mountain.
They bring the chaos, the joy, the weirdness, and the absolute undying love for rock music that makes Steelhouse more than just a festival.
So next time you see someone wrapped in a Dio flag, grilling bacon in the rain, singing their heart out at the Mountain Stage with a pint in one hand and glitter in their beardโฆ
Salute them. Hug them. Join them.
They are the true kings and queens of the hill.

Steelhouse Build Diary: Part 7 โ โFood, Booze & Bog Roll: Surviving the Mountain One Chip Fork at a Timeโ ๐๐บ๐ฝ
Yes, weโre talking all things culinary chaos, beer physics, and toilet legends of lore.
Wanna go there, butt? Letโs roll.
