The Britainโ€™s Got Talent semi-finalists have reopened the debate after blasting their original track โ€œMonstersโ€ across the nation

Saturday-night television usually serves up sparkling dance routines, tear-jerking ballads and enough dramatic pauses to fill Wembley Stadium.

Then SOS arrived and brought the bloody breakdown. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The self-described โ€œalt-rock boybandโ€ have shared a headbanging rehearsal clip alongside one brilliantly cheeky question:

โ€œHas there ever been a heavy song on prime-time TV? Or are we the first?โ€

Now, technically, rock and metal have crashed the mainstream television party before. However, hearing a young independent band perform its own heavy original song during a live Britainโ€™s Got Talent semi-final remains a proper victory for the alternative scene.

No watered-down talent-show cover. No swapping the guitars for a string section. Just riffs, hooks and four lads making enough glorious noise to frighten the Saturday-night snacks.

From Backstreet Boys to breakdowns ๐ŸŽธ

SOS first grabbed attention during their Britainโ€™s Got Talent audition with a rock-fuelled version of the Backstreet Boys classic โ€œEverybody (Backstreetโ€™s Back)โ€.

It was a clever introduction to the bandโ€™s world: familiar enough to pull viewers in, but rebuilt with loud guitars, pop-punk energy and considerably more bite.

The performance earned SOS a place in the live semi-finals, where the four-piece made the bold decision to ditch the safety net and perform an original song.

That song was โ€œMonstersโ€.

Broadcast live from the Hammersmith Apollo on 23 May 2026, โ€œMonstersโ€ brought SOSโ€™s own identity to one of the biggest stages on British television. ITV described the performance as the band debuting their infectious original track after impressing the judges with their Backstreet Boys cover. Watch the official Britainโ€™s Got Talent performance.

โ€œMonstersโ€ invaded Saturday-night television ๐Ÿ‘น๐Ÿ”ฅ

Performing original material on a television talent show is always a gamble.

Performing an original alt-rock song containing enough weight to rattle the living-room furniture? That takes some serious guts, mun.

โ€œMonstersโ€ combined a massive melodic chorus with the crunchier side of SOSโ€™s sound, proving that accessible songwriting and heavy guitars do not have to live in separate worlds. It was polished enough for prime time but still carried the energy of a band determined to represent the grassroots scene.

Simon Cowell praised SOS for choosing their own material, telling the group that they had made the right decision and highlighting their chemistry and courage.

Although SOS did not secure a place in the grand final, the performance achieved something arguably more important: it placed an original heavy song in front of a huge mainstream audience.

Somewhere in Britain, a youngster who had never wandered beyond chart pop may have heard those guitars and thought, โ€œHang onโ€ฆthis is absolutely tidy.โ€

That is how the gateway opens. ๐Ÿค˜

Were SOS really the first?

Heavy music has appeared on British prime-time television before, so SOS probably cannot claim the entire trophy cabinet.

Rock and metal bands have performed on chat shows, awards ceremonies, music programmes and previous talent competitions. Yet context matters.

SOS were not appearing as an established heritage act promoting another anniversary tour. They were a rising alternative band performing an original song during a live semi-final of one of ITVโ€™s biggest entertainment programmes.

That makes the moment genuinely special.

It was not simply heavy music appearing on televisionโ€”it was a grassroots band being allowed to sound like itself in front of the nation.

No apologies. No musical disguise. No turning the amplifiers down because somebodyโ€™s nan might be watching.

The Riff Report verdict ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

Were SOS the first band ever to put something heavy on prime-time television? Probably not.

Were they among the few rising alt-rock bands brave enough to unleash an original track, complete with proper riff-powered attitude, on one of Britainโ€™s biggest family shows?

Absolutely.

Their Britainโ€™s Got Talent adventure may have stopped at the semi-finals, but SOS walked away having planted a dirty great alternative flag in the middle of Saturday-night television.

If โ€œMonstersโ€ introduced even a handful of new listeners to heavier music, then that performance did its job.

More riffs on prime-time television, please. More original bands being given the spotlight. More headbanging between the adverts for sofas and takeaway apps.

SOS kicked the door openโ€”now let the rest of the scene pile through it. ๐Ÿ“บ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies.

Excerpt

Alt-rock boyband SOS have asked whether they were the first group to bring a genuinely heavy song to prime-time television. Their Britainโ€™s Got Talent performance of the original track โ€œMonstersโ€ certainly gave Saturday night a much-needed blast of riffs.
