๐Ÿ‰ From a grassroots Welsh football club to one of Britainโ€™s biggest festival stages โ€” this might be one of our favourite Reading Festival stories of 2026.

Sometimes the best festival moments arenโ€™t the massive pyro explosions, surprise guests or enormous circle pits.

Sometimes itโ€™s simply a football shirt.

During Fontaines D.C.โ€™s Reading Festival appearance, frontman Grian Chatten walked onto the stage wearing the unmistakable green-and-white hoops of Cwmbran Celtic FC โ€” a semi-professional Welsh football club from Cwmbran.

And naturally, anyone from South Wales watching probably did a double take.

โ€œHang onโ€ฆ is that a bloody Cwmbran Celtic shirt?!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‰

Yes.

Yes it was.

And thereโ€™s actually a cracking story behind it.

๐ŸŸขโšช Cwmbran Celtic Goes To Reading Festival

Seeing Premier League shirts at festivals isnโ€™t exactly unusual.

Liverpool. Arsenal. Manchester United. Celtic. Rangers.

Weโ€™ve all seen them wandering around festival campsites covered in mud and questionable amounts of lager.

But Cwmbran Celtic?

Onstage with Fontaines D.C.?

Now youโ€™ve got our attention. ๐Ÿ‘€

The Welsh club admitted they were apparently โ€œas surprised as anyoneโ€ when they saw Chatten wearing their shirt during the festival.

And considering the sheer size of the platform, you can understand why.

This wasnโ€™t somebody wearing it down the local pub.

This was the frontman of one of the biggest alternative rock bands around taking a little piece of Cwmbran onto the Reading Festival stage.

Proper job, mun. ๐Ÿค˜

๐ŸŽธ But Why Was Grian Chatten Wearing It?

Thereโ€™s more to the shirt than simply supporting a football club.

Cwmbran Celtic launched an inspired initiative connecting grassroots football with grassroots music, using bands rather than traditional commercial sponsors across their shirts.

Among the artists involved is Scottish post-rock royalty Mogwai.

And thatโ€™s particularly relevant here.

Chatten is a fan.

Suddenly the pieces of this wonderfully bizarre rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll football puzzle begin falling into place.

But the campaign carries an even more important message.

โค๏ธ Supporting Grassroots Music

Part of the initiative helps support Music Venue Trust, the organisation fighting to protect and preserve grassroots music venues across the UK.

And thatโ€™s something we can absolutely get behind here at The Riff Report.

Because grassroots football and grassroots music arenโ€™t actually worlds apart.

Both depend upon passionate communities.

Both rely heavily on volunteers and people willing to put ridiculous amounts of time into something simply because they love it.

And both are facing enormous financial pressures.

Without small venues, where does tomorrowโ€™s headline band learn its trade?

Without grassroots clubs, where does tomorrowโ€™s footballer kick their first proper ball?

These places matter.

๐Ÿค˜ Grian Chatten: โ€œI Think Thatโ€™s Classโ€

Chatten explained that he appreciated what Cwmbran Celtic were doing and the solidarity being shown towards struggling independent music venues.

And his assessment of the whole thing was beautifully straightforward:

โ€œI think thatโ€™s class.โ€

Couldnโ€™t have put it better ourselves, butt.

There was another wonderfully simple explanation too.

He loves Mogwai.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค˜

Sometimes rock journalism doesnโ€™t require twenty paragraphs of analysis.

Man likes Mogwai.

Man gets Mogwai football shirt.

Man wears said football shirt while performing at Reading Festival.

Job done.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Then Something Brilliant Happenedโ€ฆ

Once people spotted the shirt, interest in Cwmbran Celtic suddenly exploded.

Fans wanted to know what club it belonged to.

Others wanted to know why Chatten was wearing it.

And inevitably people started trying to get hold of one themselves.

Reports indicated that pre-orders for the shirt surged following the Reading appearance.

Think about how bonkers that is for a moment.

A community football club in South Wales suddenly had thousands of Fontaines D.C. fans potentially discovering its name because of what Grian decided to wear onstage.

Thatโ€™s the sort of publicity grassroots organisations could normally only dream about.

๐Ÿ‰ THIS Is Why We Love Welsh Grassroots Stories

At The Riff Report, weโ€™ll always have a soft spot for stories like this.

Because beneath the funny sight of a famous musician wearing an unexpected football shirt is something genuinely important.

Itโ€™s about community.

Itโ€™s about supporting grassroots culture.

Itโ€™s about recognising that the small venues, clubs, promoters, bands, volunteers and supporters at the bottom of the ladder are every bit as important as whatโ€™s happening at the top.

And seeing Cwmbran Celtic represented at Reading Festival?

Oh, thatโ€™s bloody lush.

๐ŸŽธ Fontaines D.C. Continue Their Incredible Rise

Of course, the whole thing happened while Fontaines D.C. themselves continue to operate at a completely different level from the band that first started turning heads in Dublin.

Their combination of post-punk, alternative rock, poetry and sheer attitude has turned them into one of the defining guitar bands of their generation.

Festival crowds have grown.

Venues have grown.

The stages have grown.

Yet here was their frontman using one of those enormous stages while wearing a shirt connected directly to grassroots culture.

Thereโ€™s something rather fitting about that.

โšฝ๐ŸŽธ Football And Music Have Always Belonged Together

Thereโ€™s always been something connecting football terraces and gig crowds.

The chants.

The scarves.

The tribal loyalty.

The songs.

The dodgy pies.

The bloke standing behind you whoโ€™s somehow lost his shirt despite it being twelve degrees outside.

๐Ÿ˜‚

Walk into a packed football ground and then walk into a packed rock gig and youโ€™ll recognise plenty of the same energy.

Both create communities around shared experiences.

Both produce lifelong friendships.

Both give people somewhere they feel like they belong.

So maybe Cwmbran Celtic x Fontaines D.C. x Mogwai x Reading Festival isnโ€™t quite as bizarre a crossover as it initially sounds.

๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿค˜ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

We absolutely bloody love this.

What could have been nothing more than an interesting wardrobe choice became a spotlight on Welsh grassroots football, independent music and the battle to protect grassroots venues.

And somewhere in Cwmbran, youโ€™ve got to imagine somebody watching Reading Festival with a drink in their hand suddenly shouting:

โ€œTHATโ€™S OUR SHIRT!โ€

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿบ

From a Welsh football club to one of the biggest festival stages in Britain.

Cwmbran Celtic went to Reading Festival, mun.

And they didnโ€™t even need a weekend camping ticket.
