The UK heavy metal community is rallying around veteran music journalist Dom Lawson after he suffered a heart attack during Bloodstock Open Air, with a GoFundMe fundraiser now launched to support him during his recovery. ❤️

What should have been another weekend filled with riffs, mates, festival madness and gloriously loud heavy metal took a frightening turn for one of the scene’s most familiar writers.

Longtime British rock and metal journalist Dom Lawson suffered a heart attack while attending Bloodstock, leading to an outpouring of support from musicians, journalists, industry figures and metal fans.

Thankfully, Dom survived the medical emergency and is now facing the road to recovery.

And the metal community?

It’s doing exactly what this community does when one of its own needs a hand.

It’s rallying around him. 🤘❤️

🚑 Dom Lawson Suffers Heart Attack at Bloodstock

Bloodstock is normally the place where the biggest dangers involve questionable campsite cuisine, losing your mates somewhere between stages and waking up wondering why somebody has left an inflatable dinosaur outside your tent.

This, however, was something altogether more serious.

Dom Lawson suffered a heart attack during the Bloodstock festival weekend and required medical treatment.

For somebody who has spent decades documenting the heavy metal scene, it was a frightening turn of events during one of the biggest weekends in the UK metal calendar.

News of his condition quickly travelled through the rock and metal community, prompting messages of concern and support.

Most importantly, Dom made it through.

The riffs can wait. Recovery comes first.

🎤 Who Is Dom Lawson?

If you’ve been reading British rock and metal journalism for any decent length of time, there’s a very good chance you’ve encountered Dom Lawson’s work.

Lawson has been writing professionally about heavy music since the late 1990s and has become one of the familiar voices of British metal journalism.

His work has appeared in some of the biggest rock and metal publications around, including Kerrang!, Metal Hammer and Prog.

Over the years, he’s interviewed bands, reviewed records, covered festivals and generally spent an enormous amount of time shouting enthusiastically about loud guitars.

Basically, our kind of bloke. 🤘

Dom’s relationship with Bloodstock stretches considerably further than simply turning up with a notebook, too.

He’s been involved with the festival in various capacities over the years, becoming a recognisable member of the wider Bloodstock family.

For countless metal fans, writers, musicians and industry folk, Dom isn’t simply another name printed underneath an article.

He’s part of the furniture.

The extremely loud, probably wearing a black T-shirt furniture.

💰 GoFundMe Launched: ‘Dom Lawson Medical Shenanigans’

Following Dom’s medical emergency, a GoFundMe fundraiser titled “Dom Lawson Medical Shenanigans” has been launched to help support him during his recovery.

And this is where the metal community can lend a hand.

❤️ Support Dom’s Recovery

If you’re able to contribute, you can donate directly through the fundraiser here:

👉 Donate to Dom Lawson – Medical Shenanigans on GoFundMe

Can’t donate?

Sharing the fundraiser can still help massively.

Stick it on Facebook.

Chuck it into your metal WhatsApp groups.

Send it to your festival mates.

Get it circulating around the scene.

Every share potentially puts the fundraiser in front of somebody who can contribute.

🖤 Why Supporting Freelance Music Journalists Matters

A major medical emergency can turn somebody’s life upside down in seconds.

There are hospital stays, treatment, recovery periods, follow-up appointments and potentially significant amounts of time away from work.

For people working freelance within the music industry, that can create an additional problem.

No work can mean no income.

There’s often no traditional sick pay waiting in the background and no comfortable corporate safety net.

That’s something people don’t always see when they think about music journalism.

From the outside, it can look brilliant.

Festivals!

Backstage access!

Interviews!

Gigs!

Standing three feet away from your favourite guitarist!

And yeah…

Those bits are bloody brilliant. 😂

But behind all that are deadlines, travelling, expenses, late nights, early mornings and trying to produce coherent copy while somebody is soundchecking a bass drum powerful enough to rearrange your internal organs.

Music journalists do it because they love music.

People like Dom have spent decades helping bands reach audiences and documenting the history of this wonderfully ridiculous scene.

🤘 The Metal Community Looks After Its Own

There’s something about heavy metal that people outside the scene sometimes don’t understand.

From a distance, it can look intimidating.

Black shirts.

Battle jackets.

Corpse paint.

Circle pits.

Guitars tuned somewhere around the Earth’s molten core.

Yet anyone who’s spent time around metal festivals knows there’s another side to it.

Community.

Someone falls in the pit?

They’re pulled straight back up.

Someone loses their phone?

Twenty people are shining torches across the floor looking for it.

Someone needs help?

Metalheads tend to show up.

It’s one of the reasons festivals such as Bloodstock become more than simply annual music events.

People return year after year.

Friendships form.

Bands know journalists.

Photographers know security teams.

Traders know regular customers.

Fans recognise each other from previous festivals.

Before long, you’re not merely attending an event.

You’re returning to a community.

And when somebody from that community experiences something as serious as this, people notice.

📰 The People Documenting Our Scene Matter

There’s another reason this story deserves attention.

Music journalism matters.

Yeah, we would say that.

We’re The Riff Report, mun. 😂🤘

But think about how much of rock and metal’s history exists because somebody was there documenting it.

The interviews.

The photographs.

The reviews.

The festival reports.

The tiny club shows featuring bands who later became enormous.

The albums everybody hated on release before declaring them masterpieces twenty years later.

Journalists and photographers capture those moments.

Without them, huge chunks of music history would simply disappear.

Dom Lawson has spent more than two decades contributing to that record.

That’s worth celebrating.

❤️ From The Riff Report: Get Well Soon, Dom

Here at The Riff Report, we’re sending our very best wishes to Dom during his recovery.

As an independent Welsh rock and metal publication ourselves, we know the wonderfully chaotic world of festival journalism.

The press areas.

The photography pits.

The frantic note-taking.

The interviews.

The deadlines.

The questionable Wi-Fi.

The desperate hunt for somewhere to charge your phone.

And, occasionally, attempting to upload an article from the middle of a field while thousands of metalheads are marching past carrying pints.

It’s chaos.

But it’s brilliant chaos.

And everybody involved — from the biggest magazines to independent bloggers, photographers, radio presenters, podcasters and content creators — ultimately has something in common.

We bloody love this music.

Dom has spent a huge portion of his life shouting about heavy metal.

Now it’s time for the heavy metal community to shout for him.

🤘 GET WELL SOON, DOM

There will be more albums to review.

More bands to interview.

More festivals.

More riffs.

More arguments about Metallica records.

More questionable festival food.

And hopefully plenty more Bloodstock weekends.

For now, though, there’s only one headline that really matters:

Get well soon, Dom. ❤️

Take your time.

Get properly recovered.

Heavy metal isn’t going anywhere.

And neither are we.

👉 SUPPORT THE FUNDRAISER

Donate to the “Dom Lawson Medical Shenanigans” GoFundMe here

Even if you can’t donate, give it a share and help get the word around the metal community.

Because when one of our own needs support, we turn the amps up and make some bloody noise. 🤘❤️🔥
