🤘 THE DAY OZZY OSBOURNE DISCOVERED GRINDMOTHER — AND HELPED TURN A SCREAMING GRAN INTO A METAL SENSATION 🔥

A 67-year-old grandmother, one furious grindcore anthem and a priceless reaction from the Prince of Darkness… this might be the greatest metal origin story ever told.

Heavy metal has given us fire-breathing bassists, bat-biting frontmen and guitarists dressed as intergalactic warriors — but even the scene wasn’t prepared for Grindmother.

Back in late 2015, the Canadian great-grandmother unleashed her first song, ‘Any Cost’, with her son and guitarist Rayny Forster, then known as Rain Forest.

What began as a brilliantly unexpected family recording session quickly became an internet phenomenon. The video was passed around metal circles at a ridiculous speed, magazines began covering it and television news programmes attempted to explain what they had just witnessed.

Then the Prince of Darkness himself got involved.

😈 Ozzy’s Brilliant Reaction

On 3 November 2015, Ozzy Osbourne shared Grindmother’s ‘Any Cost’ video with his enormous online following.

His wonderfully restrained response?

“What the fuck?”

That is practically a five-star review in the Ozzy Osbourne Book of Musical Criticism.

According to Grindmother, Ozzy was Rayny’s favourite singer, making the moment particularly special for the family. One minute they were sharing a homemade grindcore video; the next, the frontman of Black Sabbath was helping blast it towards an international audience.

If Ozzy Osbourne shares your mum screaming over blast beats, you’ve officially completed heavy metal. Pack up the amps, collect your achievement badge and head straight to the pub, butt.

🎤 From Coffee With Mum To Grindcore Chaos

Grindmother’s journey began when Rayny casually asked his mother whether she fancied trying a few screams during a recording session.

She had no background in extreme metal, but agreed to have a go — because apparently this is what happens during normal family coffee visits in Canada.

The results were both hilarious and genuinely impressive.

Rather than sounding like someone reluctantly humouring her son, Grindmother produced a monstrous roar packed with frustration, personality and enough raw force to frighten the biscuits back into the cupboard.

She later explained that her first scream was fuelled by everything troubling her about the world: violence, environmental destruction, political leadership and human suffering. What started as an experiment became a genuine form of expression.

The pair realised they had stumbled onto something far bigger than a one-off joke.

‘Any Cost’ followed, the internet lost its collective mind and Grindmother was born.

📺 The Media Couldn’t Get Enough

Following the song’s release, coverage arrived from every direction.

Metal publications naturally jumped aboard, but Grindmother’s story soon escaped the underground and reached mainstream television and radio. News presenters suddenly found themselves introducing footage of a grandmother unleashing demonic vocals — presumably while wondering whether their own nan had been hiding a grindcore career.

The project wasn’t merely going viral because of the contrast between Grindmother’s age and the brutality of the music, either. Behind the irresistible story was a proper band producing sharp, politically charged and seriously aggressive extreme metal.

This wasn’t someone being wheeled out for a novelty performance. Grindmother meant every single scream.

💀 More Than An Internet Gimmick

In April 2016, the band released its debut album, Age of Destruction.

Its ten compact tracks tackled social issues, environmental damage, war, corruption and the complicated state of humanity — all delivered through frantic riffs, pulverising drums and Grindmother’s unmistakable vocals.

The unlikely frontwoman also took her technique seriously. She learned how to support her screams properly using her diaphragm, helping her deliver the required brutality without wrecking her throat.

Away from the microphone, she enjoyed gardening, meditation and camping. Onstage and in the studio, however, she sounded capable of summoning something that had been chained beneath Birmingham since Black Sabbath formed.

That glorious contrast helped attract attention, but the quality and sincerity of the music kept people listening.

The band eventually performed across North America and Japan, proving that the whole thing had developed far beyond one viral clip. Grindmother had become a genuine and much-loved figure within the extreme-metal community.

🖤 A Final, Emotional Chapter

In 2025, the band revealed that Grindmother had been diagnosed with advanced dementia and would play two farewell concerts.

Those emotional final appearances took place in Montreal and Toronto in December 2025. Guest vocalists helped perform much of the material, with Grindmother herself returning to the stage for one last thunderous bow.

Her farewell came ten years after ‘Any Cost’ introduced her to the world — a decade after one spontaneous family experiment caught the attention of Ozzy Osbourne and turned an ordinary Canadian grandmother into an extreme-metal icon. Decibel’s account of the farewell described it as a loud and emotional celebration of the community that embraced her.

🤘 Metal Has No Age Limit

Grindmother’s story represents everything brilliant about heavy music.

It is rebellious, strange, funny, sincere and completely uninterested in society’s expectations. She didn’t look like the stereotypical grindcore vocalist — and that was precisely the point.

She picked up a microphone, screamed about the state of the world and discovered an international community willing to scream alongside her. The project brought a mother and son together, challenged tired assumptions about age and produced one of metal’s most wonderfully unexpected success stories. An early NPR profile captured how a casual recording experiment grew into a fully fledged band.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, Ozzy Osbourne watched the video and delivered the only reaction it really needed:

“What the fuck?”

Perfect, Ozzy. Absolutely perfect. 🤘🔥
