The Professor is back in the spotlight — and Rush fans might want to keep the tissues nearby. ❤️

The first official trailer for Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple, the forthcoming feature-length documentary celebrating the extraordinary life, artistry and legacy of legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, has arrived.

And bloody hell, Rush fans… this looks special.

Rather than simply rattling through the familiar story of one of rock music’s greatest drummers, No One’s Disciple promises something much more personal — exploring the musician, writer, friend and famously private human being behind that enormous drum kit.

Featuring Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Stewart Copeland, Danny Carey, Chad Smith and Gavin Harrison, alongside rare archive footage of Peart himself, this could be one of the most important rock documentaries of recent years.

🎬 Watch the ‘No One’s Disciple’ Trailer

The newly released trailer mixes archive footage of Peart with emotional reflections from those who knew him, while also bringing together some absolutely ridiculous drumming talent.

And when we say ridiculous, we mean stick-breaking, drum-kit-destroying levels of ridiculous.

🥁 Danny Carey – Tool
🥁 Stewart Copeland – The Police
🥁 Chad Smith – Red Hot Chili Peppers
🥁 Gavin Harrison – Porcupine Tree / King Crimson

The four acclaimed drummers join surviving Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, taking on some of Peart’s famously demanding drum parts.

Because apparently playing a Rush song normally wasn’t difficult enough.

Imagine turning up to work knowing you’re about to sit behind Neil Peart’s metaphorical drum kit while Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are standing in front of you.

No pressure, butt. 😳🥁

❤️ More Than Just ‘The Professor’

Peart’s technical ability behind the kit has been discussed for decades.

Precision. Power. Creativity. Complexity.

He could make a drum kit sound less like a collection of percussion instruments and more like an entire bloody orchestra having an argument.

But No One’s Disciple appears determined to look beyond the musician that millions of Rush fans watched from the audience.

Director Sam Dunn has explained that although audiences know Peart as the phenomenal drummer and lyricist behind Rush, considerably less is known about the person away from the stage.

That shouldn’t surprise longtime Rush fans.

Peart was famously private.

While some rock stars seemingly couldn’t walk past a camera without waving at it, Peart often preferred to let the music — and his writing — do the talking.

The documentary therefore brings together friends, musicians and archive material to explore another side of the man affectionately known as The Professor.

🎸 Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson Remember Their Bandmate

Perhaps the most emotional element of the trailer comes from Peart’s Rush brothers.

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson aren’t simply discussing one of rock’s greatest musicians.

They’re remembering their mate.

Peart joined Rush in 1974, replacing original drummer John Rutsey and completing the trio that would eventually become one of the most distinctive and influential rock bands on the planet.

What followed was extraordinary.

Albums including 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals helped establish Rush as progressive-rock giants.

But Peart’s contribution went considerably further than sitting behind the drum kit.

He became Rush’s principal lyricist, bringing philosophy, science fiction, personal reflection and huge ideas into the band’s music.

Songs such as Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Limelight and countless others became part of a catalogue that generations of musicians continue to dissect.

And then there was the drumming.

Sweet mother of cymbals.

🥁🔥

🥁 Some Of The World’s Best Drummers Take On Neil Peart

One of the documentary’s most fascinating ideas sees four hugely respected drummers stepping into Peart’s musical territory.

Danny Carey. Stewart Copeland. Chad Smith. Gavin Harrison.

These aren’t bedroom drummers having a crack at Tom Sawyer after six cans and a YouTube tutorial.

These are musicians regarded among the finest players of their generations.

Yet even for drummers operating at that level, Peart’s compositions represent a serious challenge.

That’s precisely what makes the concept so exciting.

Watching elite musicians interpret his work gives audiences another way of understanding just how extraordinary Peart’s playing actually was.

It isn’t simply about speed.

It’s composition.

Timing.

Dynamics.

Precision.

Musicality.

And occasionally what appears to be having approximately eight arms.

🎥 Familiar Hands Behind The Camera

There’s another reason Rush fans should be excited.

Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple is directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, the filmmakers behind the acclaimed 2010 documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage.

That previous film remains one of the definitive documentaries about Rush, meaning Peart’s story is being handled by filmmakers already deeply familiar with the band’s history.

The new documentary runs for approximately 96 minutes and is produced by Banger Films and Elevation Pictures.

🇨🇦 World Premiere At TIFF

Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple will receive its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on Wednesday, 16 September.

A further public screening follows on 19 September.

Canadian viewers won’t have to wait much longer after that.

The documentary is scheduled to premiere on CBC and CBC Gem on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, as part of CBC’s The Passionate Eye strand.

For Rush fans outside Canada, an exact wider release schedule hasn’t yet been announced, although Republic Pictures has acquired rights outside Canada.

So yes, UK Rush army — we’re watching this one VERY closely. 👀🇬🇧

❤️ Remembering Neil Peart

Neil Peart died on 7 January 2020, aged 67, following a battle with glioblastoma.

His death sent shockwaves through the rock world.

For millions of Rush fans, Peart wasn’t simply an incredible drummer.

He was someone whose lyrics accompanied people through their lives.

For musicians, he was inspiration.

For drummers, he was simultaneously inspiration and the reason you occasionally wanted to throw your sticks across the rehearsal room after attempting another Rush song.

And for Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, he was their friend and musical brother.

More than six years later, his influence remains absolutely enormous.

🤘 The Riff Report Says…

There are rock drummers.

There are legendary rock drummers.

And then there’s Neil Peart.

🥁👑

The trailer for No One’s Disciple suggests we’re getting something far more meaningful than another collection of famous musicians telling us that Neil Peart was brilliant.

We already know that.

This looks like a documentary about why he mattered.

Why his playing still leaves drummers scratching their heads.

Why his words connected with millions.

Why his friends loved him.

And why, decades after he first sat behind the Rush kit, musicians are still studying what he did.

Seeing Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson playing Rush music alongside some of the greatest drummers alive should be spectacular.

But hearing them talk about their mate?

That’s probably going to be the bit that gets us.

Get the headphones ready.

Turn it up.

And maybe keep a tissue somewhere nearby.

The Professor’s story isn’t finished being told. 🥁❤️🤘

The bit about four different drummers each taking on his parts is such a clever way to show what made him special — you could just tell people he was technically brilliant, but watching Copeland or Chad Smith struggle with the same fills actually proves it. Also glad they’re leaning into the “private person behind the kit” angle instead of just another highlight reel, since that’s usually the part fans never actually get to see in these docs. September 16th premiere feels like a long wait now.
