Three men are shown against a dark backdrop: a bearded man on the left looks to the side, a person in the center gazes forward, and a blurred man on the right holds a bouquet of yellow flowers in the foreground.

There are some bands that arrive politely, knock on the door, wipe their feet, and ask nicely for your attention.

Then there are bands like Civil Villains โ€” who sound like theyโ€™ve kicked the door open, rearranged the furniture, knocked over your pint, and somehow left you emotionally devastated in the best possible way.

The southern England alt-rock/post-hardcore three-piece have built their name on music that refuses to sit still. Their sound is jagged, thoughtful, heavy, melodic, awkward in all the right places, and packed with the kind of raw honesty that makes you stop mid-scroll and go: โ€œHang onโ€ฆ this is proper, mun.โ€

Now, with their second album A Sleeper, Underneath, released on 8th May 2026, Civil Villains are pushing that identity even further โ€” sharpening the edges, opening up the space, and delivering something that feels more immediate, more instinctive, and more emotionally direct.

And yes, butt โ€” it absolutely has riffs.

A Band That Lives In The Tension ๐ŸŽธ

Civil Villains are not your standard verse-chorus-verse rock band, and thank the riff gods for that.

Their music sits at the meeting point of jagged precision and melodic clarity. One moment, theyโ€™re twisting through off-kilter rhythms and angular guitar lines like theyโ€™ve got a degree in controlled chaos. The next, theyโ€™re opening things up into something clear, heartfelt, and strangely beautiful.

Thatโ€™s the magic of Civil Villains. They can be complex without being cold. Heavy without being blunt. Clever without disappearing into chin-stroking prog nonsense.

Thereโ€™s always a human pulse underneath it all.

With A Sleeper, Underneath, the band sound like theyโ€™ve taken everything that made them interesting in the first place and refined it. The structures are still unpredictable, the guitars still bite, and the dynamics still lurch and explode when needed โ€” but this time, thereโ€™s more room to breathe.

It feels less like a band trying to prove what they can do, and more like a band fully trusting who they are.

Thatโ€™s when things get exciting.

A Sleeper, Underneath โ€” More Space, More Clarity, Same Bite ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Released on 8th May 2026, A Sleeper, Underneath marks a clear evolution for Civil Villains.

This is not a band throwing away their identity for something cleaner or safer. Donโ€™t panic โ€” nobody has replaced the weird bits with shiny radio fluff. Instead, the album feels like a natural next step: tighter, more distilled, and more emotionally open.

The band still lean into their trademark contrasts: angular guitars, restless rhythms, sudden shifts, and songs that feel like theyโ€™re constantly balancing on the edge of collapse. But thereโ€™s a new sense of space here. A new confidence in letting moments land.

Where previous releases thrived on tension and immediacy, A Sleeper, Underneath brings more clarity to the table. The songs feel more direct, but not dumbed down. More open, but not softened. More accessible, but still unmistakably Civil Villains.

Itโ€™s that lovely sweet spot where the music can punch you in the ribs and then quietly sit beside you afterwards like, โ€œYou alright, mate?โ€

From Brighton Electric To A Fully-Formed Beast โšก

Civil Villainsโ€™ journey has been built properly โ€” through graft, sweat, independent spirit, and a refusal to sand off the rough edges.

Their early work began with a series of singles recorded at Brighton Electric with Josh Harrison, whose credits include Royal Blood, Sea Power, and Tigercub. Those early recordings laid down the foundations of what would become the bandโ€™s signature sound: sharp, restless, melodic, and full of tension.

They followed that with their debut EP Snake Oil, recorded live with Wayne Adams, known for his work with USA Nails and JOHN (TIMESTWO). That release captured the raw, wired energy that would become central to Civil Villainsโ€™ identity โ€” music that didnโ€™t feel overly polished, but alive, twitchy, and ready to snap.

Then came their 2023 debut album Motion Sick, recorded at Shaken Oak Studios with Mike Bannard, whose credits include Foals and Glass Animals. That record brought the bandโ€™s songwriting into sharper focus, proving they could balance intricate structures with emotional weight and genuine immediacy.

Now, with A Sleeper, Underneath, Civil Villains sound like theyโ€™ve taken every lesson from those releases and channelled it into something leaner, clearer, and more powerful.

Not a reset.

A refinement.

Built For Dark Rooms, Loud Amps, And Sweaty Ceilings ๐Ÿฅ

Some bands sound like they were built for playlists.

Civil Villains sound like they were built for small rooms where the walls sweat, the amps complain, and the person next to you keeps nodding like theyโ€™ve just discovered their new favourite band.

Their live reputation is rooted in raw, honest performances โ€” the kind where you can feel the songs being wrestled into shape right in front of you. This is music with movement. It shifts, jerks, expands, tightens, and erupts. It demands attention.

Over the years, the band have shared stages with Sparta, Listener, Poly-Math, Other Half, Kid Kapichi, and many others, placing them firmly in that gloriously interesting corner of the alternative scene where heaviness, intelligence, melody, and chaos all pile into the same van.

And speaking of vans โ€” Civil Villains have taken their independent spirit well beyond the UK.

Their DIY ethos has carried them across North America, including headline shows in Toronto and Cambridge, Massachusetts, festival appearances in Quebec City and New York City, plus dates across the Pacific Northwest.

Thatโ€™s not casual touring.

Thatโ€™s proper โ€œsleep where you can, play wherever theyโ€™ll have you, make the noise matterโ€ energy.

Tidy as anything.

Why Civil Villains Deserve Your Attention ๐Ÿ‘€

In a scene that can sometimes feel overloaded with bands chasing the same big chorus, the same tone, the same look, and the same algorithm-friendly hooks, Civil Villains feel refreshingly awkward in the best way.

They donโ€™t sound manufactured.

They donโ€™t sound predictable.

They donโ€™t sound like theyโ€™re trying to be the next version of someone else.

They sound like Civil Villains.

That might seem obvious, but in 2026, thatโ€™s a bigger compliment than ever. A Sleeper, Underneath is the sound of a band leaning further into their own identity while making that identity clearer and more emotionally resonant.

Itโ€™s inventive, but not alienating. Heavy, but not one-dimensional. Melodic, but not obvious. Thereโ€™s bite, brains, and heart all tangled together โ€” like someone threw post-hardcore, alt-rock, nervous energy, and emotional honesty into a practice room and locked the door until something interesting happened.

And something interesting definitely happened.

The Riff Report Verdict ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

Civil Villains are one of those bands that remind you why underground and independent music matters.

Because this is where the weird stuff lives.

This is where bands take risks. This is where songs donโ€™t always move in straight lines. This is where emotion doesnโ€™t need to be polished to death before it reaches your ears.

With A Sleeper, Underneath, Civil Villains have delivered a record that feels like a proper step forward โ€” more open, more direct, and more confident, while still holding onto the jagged, unpredictable energy that makes them stand out.

Itโ€™s the sound of a band refining their chaos without killing it.

And honestly? Thatโ€™s lush.

So stick A Sleeper, Underneath on, turn it up, and let Civil Villains drag you into their strange, sharp, emotionally-charged little world.

You might come out slightly rattled.

But youโ€™ll definitely come out converted.

Civil Villains have woken the sleeper โ€” and itโ€™s making one hell of a racket. ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Proudly weird. Properly sharp. Absolutely worth your ears.
