Well, Glastonbury 2025 has wrapped up โ and what a belter it was! From The Prodigy melting minds on the Other Stage ๐ฅ to surprise sets in the woods, and yes, even Neil Young scaring off half the Pyramid crowd like some apocalyptic folk prophetโฆ itโs safe to say it was one for the books.
But now, as we crawl out of the fields, clutching empty cans of Thatchers and broken dreams, reality hits: thereโs no Glastonbury Festival in 2026.
Thatโs right. No Pyramid Stage. No secret sets. No mudslides of joy.
Justโฆ the void. ๐ฉ
But why? And what do we do with ourselves in the meantime?
Letโs dive into the wild world of fallow years, the festival fatigue you didnโt know you had, and what the future holds for our beloved Glasto.
๐พ FALLOW YEAR: A FESTIVAL POWER NAP
Glastonbury doesnโt just throw a party โ it unleashes a 5-day sonic, spiritual, and logistical monster that invades Somerset, doubles the local population, and drains the UKโs entire stock of glitter and baby wipes.
To keep things sustainable (for the land, the locals, and the legendary crew), the festival takes a fallow year roughly every 5 or 6 years.
๐ What the hell is a fallow year?
In farming, a fallow year is when land is left unplanted so it can rest, recover, and regenerate. Glastonburyโs held on Worthy Farm, an actual working dairy farm with cows, crops, and countryside to protect. After hundreds of thousands of booted-up ravers stomp the fields into oblivion, that land needs a serious lie down.
And to be fair, so do we. ๐
๐๏ธ WHEN WAS THE LAST FALLOW YEAR?
Letโs do a bit of a timeline, shall we?
| Year | What Happened |
|---|---|
| 2012 | Fallow year (coincided with London Olympics & Euro footy madness) |
| 2018 | Last official fallow year before the world went sideways |
| 2020 | Cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic ๐ท |
| 2021 | Also cancelled because pandemic part two: electric boogaloo |
| 2026 | Next scheduled fallow year (planned well in advance) |
So even though 2020 and 2021 felt like fallow years, they were actually full-blown crisis cancellations. Proper fallow years are intentional โ part of the Glasto plan, not an emergency bail-out.
๐ค WHAT MICHAEL & EMILY EAVIS SAY
The Eavis family (aka The First Family of Festival) have been clear from the start:
โTaking a year off every so often gives the land and local people a break. Itโs essential for sustainability.โ โ Michael Eavis
Emily Eavis has echoed that sentiment too:
โA fallow year isnโt just for the land โ itโs for all of us. We come back fresher, stronger, and with even more creative energy.โ
Theyโre not wrong, are they? Glastonburyโs survived decades of change by being careful, considered, and long-term โ not just chasing profit or hype.
A lesser festival wouldโve crumbled after COVID. But Glasto? Sheโs a phoenix, mun. ๐ฆ ๐ฅ
๐ง WHY IT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE (EVEN IF IT SUCKS)
1. The Land Is Tired
By Monday morning, Glastonbury becomes a muddy battlefield. The site spans over 1,000 acres, with tents, toilets, food stalls, bin bags, and humans everywhere. After five days of stomping, itโs like someone fed the land six pints of Carling and made it run a Tough Mudder.
Letting the fields recover helps:
- Soil regeneration ๐ฑ
- Drainage systems reset ๐ง
- Local wildlife not pack up and leave permanently ๐ฆ
2. The Locals Deserve a Breather
Look, the people of Pilton are saints. Every summer they put up with:
- Traffic madness ๐
- People peeing in their hedges ๐ฝ
- Helicopters landing in their gardens ๐
- Lost ravers asking where Shangri-La is at 3am ๐ฆ
A fallow year means the village can be a village again, not a dystopian rave-cow-camping hybrid.
3. The Crew Need a Rest (And a Pint)
The Glasto crew are unsung legends โ building the equivalent of a city from scratch every year. They include:
- Site builders ๐ท
- Stage techs ๐๏ธ
- Clean-up teams ๐งฝ
- Security & medics ๐
- SFX gods who make fire shoot out of everything ๐ฅ
A year off gives them a breather, a chance to see their own families, and maybe โ just maybe โ go to a festival for fun.
๐ญ BUT IโM ALREADY HAVING WITHDRAWALS
We feel you. That Pyramid Stage-shaped hole in your heart is real.
But guess what? Youโve got options.
๐ช 2026 FESTIVALS TO FILL THE VOID
Just because Glastoโs having a nap doesnโt mean you have to! Hereโs where to get your fix of filthy riffs, weird food, and tent-based nightmares:
๐ฅ Download Festival
The UK’s home of metal and rock madness. Get in the pit, cโmon butt! ๐ค
๐๏ธ Isle of Wight Festival
The original OG. Big names, beach vibes, and slightly better toilets than Glasto.
๐ง Boomtown
Part music, part immersive theatre, all chaos. Like Glasto on acid. Literally.
๐ญ Latitude Festival
Art, poetry, comedy, pink sheepโฆ itโs like if Glastonbury had a posh cousin.
๐ฉธ Bloodstock
If you need something heavier than the Pyramid, go full metal โ๏ธ
๐ง Shambala, Bearded Theory, Green Man, Camp Bestival…
So many niche and brilliant alternatives. Some even offer clean toilets. Wild.
๐ง REFRAME THE FALLOW, MUN
Instead of mourning Glasto 2026, use it wisely. Hereโs how:
- Save up โ Tickets ainโt getting cheaper ๐ฌ
- Upgrade your gear โ New tent? Solar shower? Glitter cannon?
- Visit Worthy Farm off-season โ They do tours and cheese tastings!
- Volunteer at a different fest โ Experience it from the other side.
- Create a Glasto shrine โ Fairy lights, old wristbands, and incense. Vibes. โจ
๐ฎ GLASTONBURY 2027: ITโS GONNA BE MEGA
Hereโs the upside: fallow years often precede HUGE comeback years.
Glasto 2019 (after the 2018 break) gave us:
- Stormzyโs era-defining headline slot ๐ค
- Kylieโs emotional comeback ๐
- The Cure, The Killers, The Cure-ers who thought they were at The Killers
Expect 2027 to deliver the biggest, boldest, most bananas Glastonbury weโve seen yet.
Rumours already swirling include:
- Fleetwood Mac FINALLY turning up ๐ถ
- Rihanna and Taylor Swift dual headlining?! ๐
- More secret sets, late-night antics, and new stage designs
Just imagineโฆ the gates opening, the flags flying, the smell of falafel in the airโฆ
Itโll be lush, mun. Proper lush. ๐
๐ฌ FINAL THOUGHTS FROM THE CAMPSITE
We know it stings. No Glasto feels like Christmas getting cancelled. But itโs not gone โ just taking a tactical time-out. And if weโve learned anything from this festival, itโs that patience pays off.
So in 2026:
- Drink a pint for Worthy Farm ๐ป
- Hug your mate whoโs usually lost at the Stone Circle ๐ซ
- Light a tealight and whisper โsee you soonโ to the Pyramid Stage ๐ฏ๏ธ
And then, get ready. Because Glastonbury 2027?
It’s gonna be biblical.
