Those legendary “12 CDs for a penny” deals are finally heading for the great record shop in the sky.

For generations of music fans, there were few things more exciting than getting new music.

Before Spotify. Before Apple Music. Before YouTube. Before you could hear virtually any album ever recorded by tapping a screen while sitting on the bog.

There was Columbia House.

And now, after an astonishing 71 years, the legendary American mail-order entertainment club is finally calling it a day.

Columbia House will stop accepting new orders after 15 September 2026, bringing to an end one of the strangest, most brilliant and occasionally financially confusing chapters in music-buying history.

And we’re willing to bet there are a few people reading this who are suddenly wondering whether they still owe them money from 1997.

Don’t worry, butt. You’re probably safe. 😂

📬 WHEN MUSIC ARRIVED THROUGH YOUR LETTERBOX

Columbia House began life in 1955 as the Columbia Record Club, launched by Columbia Records during an era when buying music looked completely different.

There was no streaming.

No digital downloads.

No algorithm deciding that because you listened to one Metallica track you obviously wanted six hours of vaguely similar bands.

You bought records.

And Columbia House had a cracking idea:

Why make people go to the record shop when you could send the record shop directly to them?

Customers could browse catalogues, choose albums and have their selections delivered through the post.

Over the decades, the format changed alongside the music industry.

🎵 Vinyl records
📼 8-tracks
📼 Cassette tapes
💿 CDs
📹 VHS tapes
📀 DVDs
🔵 Blu-rays

Columbia House somehow managed to keep adapting.

But one thing became particularly legendary.

💰 “12 CDs FOR A PENNY!”

If you grew up during the cassette or CD era, you’ll probably remember the ridiculous Columbia House introductory offers.

The exact deals changed over the years, but the basic idea became iconic:

Get a massive pile of music for practically nothing.

One of its best-remembered promotions offered 12 CDs for a penny, provided customers signed up to the club and agreed to purchase additional albums later at regular prices.

And bloody hell, was it tempting.

You’d look through those tiny album pictures like you were assembling the greatest record collection mankind had ever witnessed.

Metallica?

Yep.

AC/DC?

Obviously.

Bon Jovi?

Chuck it in.

Guns N’ Roses?

Both albums, mun.

Then that glorious parcel would arrive.

A box stuffed with CDs.

For music-obsessed teenagers in the pre-streaming era, it felt like Christmas had arrived early.

🤘 COLUMBIA HOUSE BECAME ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE

This wasn’t some tiny mail-order operation working out of someone’s garage.

At its height during the mid-1990s, Columbia House reportedly had around 16 MILLION members.

Sixteen million.

By 1996, the company was reportedly generating approximately $1.4 billion in annual revenue.

That’s how important physical music still was.

Think about that for a moment.

Millions of people were waiting for catalogues, filling out forms, posting them back and then waiting days — sometimes weeks — for their music to arrive.

Today, if Spotify takes three seconds to load, we’re ready to launch the router through the window.

Different times. 😂

💿 THE CD COLLECTION WAS EVERYTHING

For those of us who grew up before streaming completely changed music consumption, your record or CD collection actually meant something.

You built it.

Slowly.

Album by album.

You saved your money.

You went into record shops.

You swapped CDs with mates.

You discovered bands through magazines.

You taped songs from the radio.

And services like Columbia House gave millions of people another route into discovering music.

There was something genuinely exciting about physically owning an album.

The artwork.

The booklet.

The lyrics.

The photographs.

The liner notes.

That first moment when you cracked open the jewel case and stuck the CD into your stereo.

Music wasn’t simply something sitting invisibly inside an app.

It was something you owned.

📉 THEN THE INTERNET ARRIVED…

Unfortunately for Columbia House, the music industry was about to experience one of the biggest technological earthquakes in entertainment history.

First came MP3s.

Then Napster.

Then legal downloads.

Then the iPod.

Then iTunes.

Then YouTube.

And finally the streaming revolution.

Spotify, Apple Music and other services completely transformed how millions of people consumed music.

Suddenly, waiting several days for a CD to arrive through the post looked rather old-fashioned when you could press a button and immediately hear almost anything.

Columbia House tried to adapt.

Music mail-order operations eventually disappeared, and the business increasingly concentrated on films and physical media such as DVDs.

The company went through multiple ownership changes and eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2015.

Yet somehow…

Columbia House survived.

😲 WAIT… COLUMBIA HOUSE WAS STILL GOING?!

Yep.

That’s probably the reaction of about 90% of people reading the news.

For many former customers, Columbia House feels like something that disappeared alongside Blockbuster, dial-up internet, floppy disks and recording the Top 40 onto cassette.

But the brand carried on.

Long after its glory days as a music club had disappeared, Columbia House continued operating as a much smaller physical-media business.

Until now.

After 71 years, the curtain is finally coming down.

New orders will no longer be accepted after 15 September 2026.

And with that, one of the most recognisable names from the golden age of mail-order entertainment disappears.

🎧 STREAMING CHANGED EVERYTHING

It’s impossible to talk about Columbia House disappearing without acknowledging just how dramatically our relationship with music has changed.

Once upon a time, discovering a new band might involve hearing them on the radio.

Or reading about them in Kerrang!.

Or Metal Hammer.

Or seeing their video on MTV.

You’d then have to actually find the album.

Today?

Hear band.

Open phone.

Type band name.

Press play.

Done.

It’s unbelievably convenient — and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t love having millions of songs sitting in our pockets.

But something has definitely been lost along the way.

❤️ PHYSICAL MUSIC STILL MATTERS

Here’s the interesting bit.

While Columbia House may finally be disappearing, physical music itself refuses to die.

Vinyl has enjoyed an enormous revival.

CD collecting has started attracting younger fans again.

Special-edition box sets continue selling.

Record Store Day attracts huge crowds every year.

Bands are producing coloured vinyl, deluxe editions, signed CDs and limited releases because fans still want something tangible.

Maybe we’re beginning to remember something streaming forgot:

Music can be more than access.

It can be something you collect.

Something you hold.

Something you display.

Something connected to memories.

Ask someone about an old Spotify playlist and they might struggle to remember it.

Show them the battered CD they bought when they were 16?

There’s probably an entire story attached to it.

🤘 71 YEARS OF MUSIC HISTORY

Columbia House existed through an extraordinary period of popular music.

Think about what happened between 1955 and 2026.

Elvis Presley.

The Beatles.

The Rolling Stones.

Led Zeppelin.

Black Sabbath.

Queen.

AC/DC.

Iron Maiden.

Metallica.

Guns N’ Roses.

Nirvana.

Pearl Jam.

Green Day.

Slipknot.

Linkin Park.

And thousands upon thousands of others.

Genres appeared, exploded, disappeared and came back again.

Vinyl gave way to cassette.

Cassette gave way to CD.

CD gave way to downloads.

Downloads gave way to streaming.

And somehow Columbia House kept hanging around in the background.

Until now.

🪦 RIP COLUMBIA HOUSE: 1955–2026

For younger music fans, Columbia House might sound completely bonkers.

You mean people looked through a paper catalogue…

Selected albums…

Sent an order away…

And then waited for physical copies to arrive?

Yep.

And we bloody loved it.

Columbia House belonged to an era when building a music collection took time, effort and occasionally some very questionable financial decision-making.

Its closure might not change the modern music industry.

But it represents something bigger.

Another little piece of the physical-media era is disappearing.

So raise your scratched CDs.

Raise your battered cassette tapes.

Raise that vinyl copy you’ve somehow managed to buy four different coloured versions of.

And spare a thought for Columbia House.

71 years. Millions of music fans. Countless records, tapes and CDs delivered through letterboxes.

Not a bad innings at all.

And if you still owe them for those 12 CDs you ordered for a penny…

Maybe keep quiet about it. 😂🤘

💬 RIFF REPORTERS — DO YOU REMEMBER COLUMBIA HOUSE?

Did you ever sign up?

What albums did you order?

Did Columbia House help build your first proper music collection?

And most importantly…

Did you actually fulfil the purchase agreement afterwards? 👀😂

Come on then — let’s hear your Columbia House memories.
