Another round of worrying news has landed for Britain’s pub scene, and this one involves one of the biggest names behind the bar.

Greene King, Britain’s second-largest pub company, has confirmed it is reviewing around 65 pubs for potential sale as part of a major shake-up of its enormous UK estate.

Yep. Sixty-five pubs could be changing hands.

And while that doesn’t automatically mean 65 pubs are closing, it’s another reminder that running a British boozer in 2026 is becoming about as relaxing as standing three rows from the front at a Slipknot gig while carrying four pints. šŸ»šŸ¤˜

For those of us who reckon the local pub is every bit as important to British culture as fish and chips, festivals, football and arguing about whether Black Sabbath invented heavy metal, it’s a story worth keeping an eye on.

šŸŗ What’s Happening With Greene King?

Greene King operates around 2,500 pubs across the UK, making it one of the biggest players in the British hospitality industry.

Earlier in 2026, the company announced a wider restructuring of its pub estate.

Around 300 managed pubs were identified for potential changes.

Roughly half were expected to move towards leased, tenanted or franchise arrangements, while around another 150 were being assessed for potential sale over the medium term.

Now Greene King has confirmed that around 65 pubs are actively being reviewed for possible sale.

The sites could reportedly be sold individually or packaged together depending on interest from potential buyers.

At the moment, Greene King hasn’t publicly revealed a complete list of the 65 pubs involved.

So before everyone starts sprinting down the road shouting…

ā€œTHE LOCAL’S CLOSING, MUN!ā€

…hold your horses. šŸ˜‚šŸŗ

A sale does not necessarily mean closure.

A pub could simply move to another operator and continue pulling pints exactly as before.

But naturally, whenever pubs are placed on the market, there’s going to be concern about what happens next.

šŸ» This Is Part Of A Much Bigger Greene King Shake-Up

This isn’t something that’s suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Back in March 2026, Greene King announced plans for a substantial restructuring of its managed estate.

The company identified around 300 pubs that could be better suited to a different operating model.

The plan broadly involved:

  • Around 150 pubs potentially being sold
  • Around 150 moving towards leased, tenanted or franchise models
  • A relatively small number potentially closing
  • Money raised through disposals being reinvested into Greene King’s core pub estate

The company has described the strategy as part of its attempt to create sustainable and profitable growth while concentrating investment on its strongest locations.

From a business perspective, you can understand the logic.

But from the perspective of somebody sitting in their local with a pint wondering whether it’ll still exist in five years…

It’s slightly less comforting.

šŸ’· Running A Pub Isn’t Cheap Anymore

The brutal reality is that Britain’s hospitality industry has been getting battered from virtually every direction.

Running costs have climbed.

Energy bills have climbed.

Food prices have climbed.

Wages have climbed.

Business rates remain a huge concern.

Insurance isn’t getting cheaper.

Suppliers aren’t getting cheaper.

And meanwhile customers are dealing with their own cost-of-living pressures.

That creates one hell of a difficult equation.

A pub can increase the price of a pint to cover rising costs…

…but eventually customers start looking at the price and thinking:

ā€œĀ£7?! I’ll grab a crate from Tesco and watch Netflix instead.ā€

And there’s the problem.

Pubs need customers.

Customers need money.

And increasingly, both are being squeezed.

šŸŗ The British Pub Is More Than Somewhere To Get Drunk

This is something that often gets forgotten whenever pub closures become a financial statistic.

A good local isn’t simply a building selling lager.

It’s part of the community.

It’s where football teams meet after matches.

It’s where local bands play their first gigs.

It’s where charity nights happen.

It’s where people celebrate birthdays, weddings, promotions and retirements.

It’s where someone might pop in because they’re lonely and know there’ll be somebody behind the bar willing to have a chat.

And yes…

It’s also where somebody called Dai will tell you exactly what’s wrong with Manchester United despite nobody asking him.

That’s community, mun. šŸ˜‚šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬ó æ

Once a pub disappears, you don’t always get it back.

The building becomes flats.

Or offices.

Or a convenience store.

Or, apparently, another bloody coffee shop.

And suddenly something that had been part of a town for generations is gone.

šŸŽø Pubs Matter To Live Music Too

Here’s where this becomes particularly important to us at The Riff Report.

Small pubs and venues are the foundations of Britain’s live music scene.

Before bands headline arenas…

Before they’re playing Download…

Before they’re getting their logo printed halfway up a festival poster…

They’re often playing in pubs.

Tiny stages.

Dodgy PA systems.

Sticky floors.

Forty people squeezed into a room designed for twenty-five.

A drummer practically sitting inside the toilets because there isn’t enough space.

Glorious.

šŸ”„šŸŽøšŸŗ

Those rooms matter.

Countless legendary British musicians started out playing pubs and clubs where practically nobody knew their names.

Remove enough of those spaces and eventually you remove part of the ladder that allows tomorrow’s bands to develop.

That’s why the health of the British pub industry matters to music fans as well.

🚨 But Let’s Be Clear – 65 Pubs Aren’t Necessarily Closing

This distinction is important.

The current development concerns Greene King reviewing approximately 65 pubs for potential sale.

That isn’t the same as announcing 65 closures.

Potential purchasers could buy pubs and continue operating them as pubs.

Some could potentially become independently operated venues.

Others could join different hospitality companies.

Until individual sales are completed and the future of each site becomes clear, it’s far too early to start writing obituaries for all of them.

And frankly, we’d rather see pubs sold as functioning businesses than simply boarded up.

šŸ» Britain’s Pub Industry Is Going Through Massive Change

Greene King isn’t operating in isolation either.

Across Britain, major pub and hospitality companies have been reassessing estates, selling locations, restructuring businesses and trying to deal with rising costs.

Meanwhile independent landlords are facing many of exactly the same pressures without having thousands of other venues behind them.

The scary question is:

What does the British pub landscape look like ten years from now?

Because losing pubs gradually can sometimes disguise the scale of what’s happening.

One closes here.

Another closes six months later.

Another gets converted into flats.

Another becomes a supermarket.

You don’t necessarily notice immediately.

Then one day you walk through town and realise half the pubs you remember have disappeared.

šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬ó æ Protect The Local, Butt

We’re certainly not going to pretend every pub can or should be preserved forever regardless of whether anyone actually uses it.

Businesses have to survive financially.

But there is something genuinely important about protecting viable community pubs wherever possible.

And there’s one ridiculously straightforward thing we can all do.

Use them.

Fancy watching the football?

Try the local.

Meeting your mates?

Try the local.

Fancy Sunday dinner?

Try the local.

Local band playing Friday night?

Get yourself down there.

Quiz night?

Go embarrass yourself by confidently claiming Metallica released Master of Puppets in 1987.

They didn’t.

Your teammates will never forgive you.

šŸ˜‚šŸ¤˜

Because ultimately pubs can’t survive purely on nostalgia.

They need people through the doors.

šŸŗ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Greene King’s decision to review around 65 pubs for potential sale isn’t confirmation of a mass closure programme, and that’s important to remember.

But it’s another sign of just how much pressure and transformation is currently running through Britain’s hospitality industry.

Hopefully many of these pubs will find buyers who keep the beer flowing, the kitchens cooking and — most importantly for us riff-loving lunatics — the amps switched on.

Because Britain without its pubs?

Nah.

That doesn’t bear thinking about.

The British boozer has survived wars, recessions, smoking bans, changing drinking habits, terrible karaoke and people ordering Guinness when there are twelve customers already waiting.

Surely we can keep the old girl going a bit longer.

šŸŗšŸŽøšŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬ó æ

Support your local. Support live music. Support the people behind the bar.

And if your local still does a pint, chips and a bit of Sabbath on the jukebox?

Protect that place at all costs, mun. šŸ¤˜šŸ”„šŸŗ
