Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, Mashd N Kutcher — also known as MNK — have developed into one of the most distinctive live electronic acts on the international circuit.

🇦🇺 The Beginning of Mashd N Kutcher
Mashd N Kutcher were formed in Brisbane in 2013, with musician, songwriter and producer Matt James at the heart of the project.
The original concept was built around combining electronic dance music with the energy and unpredictability of a live band. Rather than simply standing behind a set of decks, the project would feature DJs and multi-instrumentalists performing together.
This gave Mashd N Kutcher the freedom to jump between styles, decades and genres without asking anyone’s permission.
House music could suddenly collide with rock.
Pop songs could be rebuilt as festival anthems.
Everyday noises could be sampled and transformed into music.
Classic tracks could be mashed together with completely unexpected partners.
It was weird, clever and ridiculously entertaining — which meant the internet naturally loved it.
🚀 From Brisbane to the World
What began as an Australian electronic project quickly grew into an international live act.
Mashd N Kutcher have performed across Australia, Asia, India, Europe and the United States, building their reputation through relentless touring and energetic festival appearances.
According to the band, they have now played more than 1,500 live shows around the world.
That is a frankly outrageous amount of jumping around, knob-twiddling, drum-smashing and persuading strangers to lose their minds in public.
Their shows have taken them from clubs and festivals to major sporting events, corporate performances and large-scale entertainment productions.
Throughout that journey, the central idea has remained the same: electronic music should feel genuinely live.
🥁 More Than a Traditional DJ Set
Calling Mashd N Kutcher a DJ act does not tell the full story.
Their performances are built around musicianship, movement and crowd interaction. Live drums, guitars, keyboards, vocals, samples and electronic production all become part of the show.
That creates an experience much closer to a rock concert than a standard club set.
There are huge drops.
There are live instrumental sections.

🎛️ Welcome to the Mash Machine
One of the most important parts of the Mashd N Kutcher live experience is the Mash Machine.
Created as a visual performance rig, the instrument allows the group to trigger music, lighting, graphics and other production elements during their shows.
It gives them the ability to combine live music with synchronised visual entertainment, adding another level of madness to performances that were already fairly unhinged.
Rather than watching somebody press play and wave their hands in the air for an hour, audiences are presented with a genuine performance packed with movement, musicianship and visual surprises.

🎵 The Early Breakthrough
Mashd N Kutcher began attracting significant attention through their online mash-ups, musical experiments and viral videos.
Their breakthrough single “Do It Now” arrived in 2014 and helped establish the project within Australia’s electronic music scene.
The track reached the Australian charts and earned platinum certification, giving Mashd N Kutcher their first major taste of commercial success.
But the group were only getting started.
☀️ “My Sunshine” Brings Platinum Success
In 2015, Mashd N Kutcher released “My Sunshine”, a dance track built around elements of Len’s enormous late-1990s hit “Steal My Sunshine.”
The song became one of their biggest releases, reaching number 18 on the Australian singles chart and earning platinum certification.
“My Sunshine” demonstrated exactly what Mashd N Kutcher did best: taking something familiar, twisting it into a completely different shape and sending it back onto the dancefloor with a massive electronic boot up the backside.
The track helped take their music to mainstream radio audiences while increasing demand for their live show.
🥪 Turning a Sandwich Shop Into a Song
Also in 2015, Mashd N Kutcher demonstrated just how far their creative approach could go with “Sounds of Subway.”
The group visited Subway restaurants around Brisbane and recorded everyday noises from inside the shops.
Ovens beeping.
Ice machines rattling.
Staff members talking.
Equipment buzzing.
The sounds were then chopped, sampled and turned into a piece of electronic music.
It was exactly the kind of brilliantly daft experiment that made Mashd N Kutcher stand out from the endless crowd of electronic producers online.
Where most people heard the background noises of somebody preparing a sandwich, Mashd N Kutcher heard the beginnings of a dance track.

🍺 “Get On The Beers” Becomes a Cultural Phenomenon
Mashd N Kutcher reached another level of national recognition in 2020 with “Get On The Beers.”
The track sampled and rearranged comments made by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews during a COVID-19 press conference.
Andrews had originally been warning Australians that it was not appropriate to gather with friends and “get on the beers” during restrictions.
Mashd N Kutcher transformed those comments into an infectious dance track that spread rapidly across social media.
The remix became far bigger than a simple internet joke.
“Get On The Beers” reached number 12 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2020, became a platinum-certified release and embedded itself firmly within Australian popular culture.
It remains one of the group’s most recognisable songs and a perfect example of their ability to turn almost anything into music.

🏆 Awards and Industry Recognition
The success of “Get On The Beers” also brought Mashd N Kutcher major industry recognition.
The song won Most Performed Dance/Electronic Work at the 2022 APRA Music Awards, confirming that the viral phenomenon had become a genuine musical success.
Across their career, Mashd N Kutcher have achieved multiple gold and platinum-certified records, number-one dance releases and high-profile radio support.
They also signed with Universal Music Group in 2017 and secured a publishing agreement with BMG, helping expand the project beyond Australia.
🤯 Will It Mash?
In 2022, Mashd N Kutcher launched an online series called “Will It Mash?”
The idea was wonderfully simple: take different songs, artists or musical genres, smash them together and see what happens.
The series features the band experimenting with unlikely combinations while capturing the reactions of special guests.
Those guests have included musicians, media personalities, radio presenters, professional athletes and members of The Wiggles.
“Will It Mash?” perfectly represents the Mashd N Kutcher philosophy.
There are no sacred genres.

❤️ Music With a Bigger Purpose
Behind the humour and festival chaos, Mashd N Kutcher also have a deeply meaningful connection to cancer support, research and awareness.
In 2023, founder Matt James established an ongoing fundraising commitment connected to the group’s song “It’s Alright.”
The artist streaming royalties generated by the track are donated to Myeloma Australia, supporting the organisation’s work around research, awareness and assistance for people affected by multiple myeloma.
The initiative followed Matt’s own health journey and showed another side to the Mashd N Kutcher story.
The group may be known for laughs, parties and giant electronic drops, but there is real heart beneath all that noise.

💿 The Legacy Album
In December 2024, Mashd N Kutcher released their debut studio album, Legacy.
